It is almost guaranteed that you 

will stumble onto a film set when 

walking around the Lower East Side 

on any given day. The neighborhood, 

known for its gritty appeal with 

edgy boutiques, hip bars, and above 

all, a deep immigrant history, makes 

an authentic backdrop for a show 

about two friends hustling to make 

it big in NYC. 

Over the past two years you may 

have run into the stars of HBO’s 

How to Make it in America during 

one of the show’s frequent shoots 

here in the LES. Victor Rasuk, 

an LES native, and his co-star 

Bryan Greenberg shared insight on 

what they came to know and love 

about the Lower East Side while 

working here. 

How is the city as a co-star? 

Bryan: The city could be the lead 

of the show and the actors are its 

co-stars. The city consists of people 

from all over the world, yet all very 

relatable. I don’t think this show 

can take place anywhere but 

New York City. 

Victor: The city is the most essential 

part of the show. Without it, there 

is no show. 

How has your perception of 

the neighborhood changed as 

a result of your involvement in 

the show? 

Bryan: I’ve gotten to know the 

locals. We shoot almost everything 

on location with a lot of real 

New Yorkers and I’ve gotten to 

know and have become friendly 

with several of them. 

Victor: It just brought work and 

home closer together. 

What neighborhood do you 

spend most of your time when 

not filming? 

Bryan: The East Village and 

Lower East Side. 

Victor: I guess what is now called 

Alphabet City, anything on the east 

side below 14th street and above 

Chinatown was the Lower East Side 

to me. All these mini neighborhoods 

have been created, but growing up 

it was all LES. 

Favorite restaurant in the hood? 

Bryan: Barrio Chino 

Victor: Sons of Essex 

And finally, the burning 

question: NY or LA? 

Bryan: I like both, but I love NYC. 

Victor: New York all the way!

scrap metal business, which was founded

work. Inspired by music and historic men’s 

garments and themes, and guided by the 

spirit of his humble beginnings, James’s 

designs appeal to high-end men’s fashion 

books as well as the average guy. 

The brand also uses local goods and 

manufacturing, insuring that every product 

is not only great for the consumer, but 

has a deeper environmental conscience 

while supporting local businesses in the

THE CAST 71 Orchard Street 

The Cast is a downtown 

New York based men’s 

and women’s clothing 

label and shop 

specializing in denim, 

leather, vintage clothing 

& boots, records, and 

other rock ‘n’ roll necessities. 

The Cast started 

in the Lower East Side in 

2004 with a small T-shirt collection, which 

quickly expanded into a full menswear 

line. By 2009, the company saw a change 

in partnership with the addition of Elisa 

Maldonado. That same year, co-founders 

Chuck Guarino and Elisa launched the 

women’s line and opened up shop at 71 

Orchard Street. The Cast continues to 

manufacture all their denim and leather 

here in New York City.

EARNEST SEWN 90 Orchard Street 

This premium denim shop 

opened on Orchard Street in 

2007 after a meticulous renovation 

of a 1902 storefront. 

Earnest Sewn is a denim and 

clothing brand that sets itself

Husband and wife team Adele Berne and 

Michael Kuhle established Epaulet, a classic 

American style clothing company with 

a British twist, in May 2008 in Brooklyn.

Welcome to the Lower East Side! 

Here at the northeast corner of Essex and Delancey Streets, 

in the heart of one of New York’s oldest neighborhoods, 

stands a living monument to the area’s rich immigrant 

history: the seventy-year-old Essex Street Market. 

At the turn of the century, the streets of the Lower East 

Side were lined with pushcart vendors selling food and 

dry goods to the residents of this most densely populated 

neighborhood in Manhattan. As the population continued 

to soar through the early 1900s, pushcarts and their 

vendors crowded the narrow downtown streets causing 

safety and health concerns. In an effort to ease the 

congestion of these busy Lower East Side roadways, Mayor 

Fiorello H. LaGuardia built a permanent home for street 

merchants in 1940 – the Essex Street Market.

The market became the epicenter of shopping and social life on 

the Lower East Side, first with Jewish and Italian immigrants, 

and then evolving as new ethnicities moved into the area.

beginning in the late 90s and continuing today.
