C&I Energy Efficiency

Programs for 2009

Why offer Energy Efficiency Programs & Services?

»

»

»

More efficient customer operations – When our

customers use energy more efficiently, they become

more profitable and more competitive. That means they

stay in Massachusetts and stay in our service territory.

Increased asset value -By installing energy efficient

equipment, customers will have better, longer lasting

equipment. By investing in customer's facilities, NSTAR is

able to reduce electrical infrastructure expenditures,

benefiting all customers.

Fewer emissions - With each kWh saved, less CO2,

NOX, and SO2 are generated. Using energy wisely

means we all get to live and work in a better, healthier

environment.

Construction Solutions Program

Focus on Time Dependent Opportunities

Program Tracks:

Prescriptive

• Custom

Financial Incentives: Up to 75% of Incremental

Cost of EE Equipment

• Up to 50% cost sharing for technical assistance

engineering and commissioning service

Movement toward system efficiency approach

rather than individual components

Construction Solutions

Prescriptive applications include

• Lighting - High performance fixtures, occupancy sensors

beyond code compliance, daylight dimming, Performance

Lighting

• VSDs for HVAC systems - if exceeding code

• Chillers – single chillers of various types

• Cool Choice – Incentives for premium efficiency RTUs,

heat pumps, and other unitary HVAC types. Also includes

advanced controls, ECM motors

• Motor-Up – Premium efficiency motors for new

construction or replacement

• Compressed air – New VSD or load/no-load

compressors, cycling dryers, storage; either new

installations or replacements

Construction Solutions

Custom applications

• Measures that don’t fit in any prescriptive

category and can be documented through sound

engineering to save electricity

• Require engineering analysis to document

savings

Financial Incentives

• Up to 75% of incremental costs, higher for

Comprehensive Design and Comprehensive

Chiller

• Up to 50% cost sharing for technical assistance

engineering and commissioning services

Comprehensive Design (CD)

» Building Size >100,000sq.ft, has >200 tons cooling,

and has substantial improvements possible for HVAC,

architectural, and lighting systems.

» Examines building as an integrated system

» Identifies cost effective design alternatives prior to

final design & construction

» Offers enhanced incentives of up to 90% of

incremental costs in exchange for committing to a

design process and engaging NSTAR at Schematic

Design or early in Design Development.

Comprehensive Chiller

» For projects involving end-of-life HVAC system

replacements

» Building Size >100,000sq.ft and Chiller Size >200tons

» Integrated approach that addresses chiller

performance and demand side of HVAC use by

reducing cooling load

» Project must include minimum of 3 ECMs that provide

substantial energy savings by reducing HVAC cooling

load (tons)

» Offers enhanced incentives on entire package of

measures including chiller and load reduction ECMs

Advanced Buildings

What is AB?

• It is a path for the design team

wishing to create high

performance commercial

buildings that stand out for their

energy efficiency and healthy

environments.

Targeted Building size:

20,000-100,000 sq ft.

Enhanced Financial and

Technical Incentives

Building Performance Programs

»

Two programs:

• Energy Star Benchmarking

• Retro-commissioning (RCx)

»

»

»

Energy Star Benchmarking

Compares customers of like

facilities to assess and address

energy efficiency opportunities

Provides benchmarking with EPA

“Portfolio Manager”

Targets mid-size account customers

»

»

Retro-Commissioning (RCx) -

What is it?

Pilot

• “Tuning up” existing facilities to current optimal

energy efficient standards

• Optimizes building performance by reducing

energy waste, fixing low cost/no cost problems:

Process

• Pre-qualify your opportunity with NSTAR first

• Conduct Energy Star Benchmarking if appropriate

• NSTAR pays up to 50% of RCx

analysis and report

• Low Cost/No cost measures that have 1 year

payback or less must be implemented within 6

months

»

»

Training

Training

• Advanced Buildingsfor design

community (ie

architects/engineers)

• Building Operator Certification

(BOC) – for O&M Staff

• End-use (e.g. pumps, fans,

motors, compressed air, etc.)

technical trainings in conjunction

w/MAEEP (Labs21 NEW!)

Can earn Continuing

Education Credits (CEU’s)

»
