DELAWARE VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL, MILFORD, PA.<br />

Directors who wish to have their students (grades 8-12 only) considered for selection to the 2013 <strong>PMEA</strong><br />

District <strong>10</strong> Jazz Ensemble should meet the following criteria:<br />

1) Complete the application form. Director must be a current <strong>PMEA</strong> member.<br />

2) Record all audition selections on a standard DVD that can be played in a standard DVD player<br />

and windows media player. (PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK THE PLAYABILTY OF THE DVD<br />

BEFORE THE DVD IS SUBMITTED) Each requirement must be recorded from start to finish<br />

without cuts and/or splices. The recording may be stopped between selections but not edited in<br />

any other way.<br />

3) Label the disk box with the following information (DO NOT PRINT ANY OF THE<br />

FOLLOWING IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ON THE DISK ITSELF.<br />

a. Student’s name and instrument<br />

b. Director’s name and email<br />

c. School name, address and phone number<br />

d. Student’s grade in school<br />

4) The director is asked to review the recording to verify the recorded material is consistent with the<br />

student’s level of ability.<br />

5) Submit a completed application, a photocopy of the director’s <strong>PMEA</strong>/NAfME membership card<br />

and a standard format DVD disk. Disks should be unedited with no post production effects (e.g.<br />

reverb, or any other sound enhancement) accompanied by a color copy of the auditioning<br />

student’s school ID. Mail DVD and application to: LANCE RAUH, 149 Lookout Ct., Henryville,<br />

PA 18332, postmarked no later than JANUARY 25th, 2013.<br />

6) Students can expect notification by FEBURARY 8th, 2013. Audition Disks will not be returned.<br />

7) Incomplete application or those postmarked after January 25 th, 2013 will not be considered.<br />

8) Students may audition on multiple instruments. Students who choose to audition on 2 instruments<br />

must submit 2 separate applications and audition DVDs meeting all audition criteria for each<br />

instrument.<br />

The audition DVD will be reviewed by a select committee specific to each instrument. They will be<br />

viewed and judged on criteria similar to that utilized to select membership to the other ensembles.<br />

The committee will be comprised professional musicians and educators familiar with the jazz idiom.<br />

The audition DVD will not be returned.<br />

ALL SAXOPHONES<br />

A) Bb major scale from low Bb to high F and back down in swung eighth notes at a tempo that<br />

demonstrates accuracy and control. Same exercise on a B major scale from low B to high F# and<br />

back down.<br />

B) Play Scrapple from the Apple (unaccompanied) found on pages 16-17 of the Charlie Parker<br />

Omnibook (Eb Edition).<br />

C) Play one chorus of My One and Only Love (in C major concert) in ballad style found on pg. 288<br />

of The Real Book: Sixth Edition. Play transposed for specific instrument. Student should<br />

ornament and embellish freely to demonstrate musicianship.<br />

D) Improvise 3 choruses over standard blues changes at a moderate swing tempo.<br />

Suggested accompaniment: Blue Note Blues found on page 18 in Effective Etudes for Jazz by<br />

Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis. NOTE: This is the All-State requirement. For the purposes of this<br />

audition, any accompaniment of a standard blues progression at a moderate tempo is acceptable.<br />

TRUMPET<br />

A) 2 octave C and D major scales in swung eighth notes at a tempo that demonstrates accuracy and<br />

control of range.<br />

B) Play etude Two Plus Two (unaccompanied) found on pages 36-37 of the Jazz Conception by Jim<br />

Snidero.<br />

C) Play one chorus of My One and Only Love (in C major concert) in ballad style found on pg. 288<br />

of The Real Book: Sixth Edition. Play transposed for specific instrument. Student should<br />

ornament and embellish freely to demonstrate musicianship.<br />

D) Improvise 3 choruses over standard blues changes at a moderate swing tempo.<br />

of The Real Book: Sixth Edition. Play transposed for specific instrument. Student should<br />

ornament and embellish freely to demonstrate musicianship.<br />

A) 3 octave (two hand) Bb and C major scales in swung eighth notes at a tempo that demonstrates<br />

accuracy and control. VIBES: 2 octaves only.<br />

B) Play etude It’s Nobody for Me (unaccompanied, vibes play lead line, piano play lead while<br />

comping) found on pages 62-65 of the Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis.<br />

C) Play one chorus of My One and Only Love (in C major concert) in ballad style found on pg. 288<br />

of The Real Book: Sixth Edition. Play transposed for specific instrument. Student should<br />

ornament and embellish freely to demonstrate musicianship.<br />

BASS<br />

A) 2 octave Bb and C major scales in swung eighth notes at a tempo that demonstrates accuracy and<br />

control.<br />

B) Play etude The Moon is High (unaccompanied) found on pages 16-17 of the Effective Etudes for<br />

Jazz by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis.<br />

C) “Walk” through etude Sweet Georgia found on pages 32-33 in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz<br />

by Mike Carubia and Jeff Jarvis.<br />

D) Play 4 choruses of standard blues changes. Chorus 1 and 2 walk a bass line, chorus 3 and 4<br />

improvise. This may be performed unaccompanied or accompanied.<br />

DRUMS<br />

A) Play along with the following tracks from the book The Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley.<br />

Catch all written figures and provide appropriate comping throughout each example.<br />

a. Track 41, Last Week (from Art of Bop Drumming): Shuffle feel for the A sections, “2”<br />

feel for the B sections.<br />

b. Track 44, Satch & Diz (from from Art of Bop Drumming):3/4 A section with 4/4 bridge.<br />

Use brushes for the head and both choruses of the piano solo, switch to sticks for the<br />

remainder of the piece.<br />

c. Track 42, What is this Thing Called (from Art of Bop Drumming): Play the piece as is<br />

with one chorus of solo drums added at the end of the coda (exactly 32 measures of 4/4 in<br />

AABA form in time).<br />

B) Provide an unedited recording of yourself performing the following styles:<br />

a. Samba: half note=120, 4/4 time, play exactly 16 full measures use idiomatic<br />

comping/fills and play with sticks and/or brushes.<br />

b. Salsa (Mambo): half note=1<strong>10</strong>, 2:3 clave, play exactly 16 full measures, use idiomatic<br />

comping/fills, play with sticks.<br />

C) Provide a recent, unedited recording of you playing with your high school jazz ensemble or<br />

comparable ensemble.<br />

**OPTIONAL EXCERPT FOR LEAD ALTO, LEAD TRUMPET, LEAD TROMBONE, or BASS<br />

TROMBONE. Perform a short excerpt of your choice that best demonstrates your lead/bass ability.
