Rides to the Swearing In
Ceremony
As you know, the swearing in ceremony
for Sheriff Ramsay is on January 8, 2013 at
11:00 a.m. at the Freeman Justice Center on
Fleming Street. To help us avoid driving in
the traffic and dealing with parking, the Transportation
Dept. will do a bus run from the Key
West jail facility and back again. If you would
like to reserve a seat, please contact Carol
Peterson at 293-7325 or via email. The seat
availability is on a first come first served basis.
The bus will leave the jail at approximately
10:00 a.m. and will return to the jail upon
completion of the ceremony allowing time for
traffic.
Long-time Sheriff’s Office
employee dies of cancer
Some of you will remember
Sgt. J.B. Flatter,
who retired from the
Sheriff’s Office in April of
2007. Sgt. Flatter passed
away December 28th in
Memphis from esophageal
cancer. His long-time friend
Jan Schuffman - who also

CPR Class Offered Free of Charge
Islamorada is offering CPR training to the community
free of charge. In the interactive classes,
participants will learn how to prevent, recognize and
respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies and
learn how to perform CPR in infants, children and
adults.
The next class will be held at Fire Station 20
(MM 81.9 bayside) on Thursday, January 31, 2013
from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Class size is limited, so
call soon to secure your seat or to have your name
added to the list for a future class. Future classes will
be scheduled if there continues to be adequate community
interest.
The classes are offered to people living or working
in Islamorada. Participants must be at least 13
years old and should wear comfortable clothing to
practice CPR techniques during the class. Those
successfully completing the class will receive American
Red Cross CPR certification.

given CPR. Unfortunately, most Americans are not
trained in this simple but crucial life saving skill. Seventy
to eighty percent of cardiac arrest emergencies
happen in the home. Be prepared to help your loved
ones by taking a CPR class.

HARLEM STRING QUARTET Plays
Downtown Key West.
Imagine the thrill of a young string quartet playing
Carnegie Hall and the Obama White House in

What a deal! The Harlem String Quartet concert occurs
on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 2 P.M. in the
acoustically marvelous St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
on Duval Street.
Harlem String Quartet Members include Ilmar
Gavilán, violin Melissa White, violin Juan-Miguel
Hernandez, viola Paul Wiancko, cello. The Harlem
program is: String Quartet #15, Wolfgang Mozart,
The Adventures of Hippocrates, Chick Corea, Take
the A Train, Billy Strayhorn, Death and the Maiden,

Deputy Jason Strong received a Sheriff’s Medal
at yesterday’s ceremony. He responded to
reports of a woman not breathing at Hawk’s
Cay. He was able to remove food from the
woman’s throat which she was choking on, thus
saving her life. In the photo, Lieutenant Bruce

Detective David Cruz, the law enforcement
officer of the quarter for the fourth quarter of
2012, was also recognized by First State Bank.
Cruz solved a case involving a dog which was
found dead in the water inside a cage. The high
profile case attracted lots of attention, including
a web site which raised money for a reward.
First State Bank also offered a $500.00 reward
for tips leading to the resolution of the case.
There were no tips to reward - Detective Cruz
solved it by hard work and extensive follow-up,
so all the reward money will be donated to the
Florida Keys Society for Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals. In the photo, Detective Sgt. Donald

Becky Shifflett, Branch Manager of the Marathon
First State Bank.
