The perfect solution –

a matter of philosophy

The market for paper post-processing equipment is defined

by compact, centrally controlled machines which

are designed for one specific task. But the increasingly

The Müller modular system is composed of paper processing

modules using microprocessor technology, all of

which are compatible and exchangeable with one another

on both a mechanical and logical level.

The heart of each device is formed by independent

electronics which provide fully autonomous control.

Separate data interfaces make the connection to other

modules. Thanks to the standardized mechanical interface

technology and standardized paper inlet and outlet

heights, all modules can be combined freely with

A single connection provides both power and data, and

a quick-connect creates the mechanical connection. This

allows for quick and easy modification of every system.

Sheet-based data transmission allows for a wide range

of processing setups, since every module has access to

all of the information during throughput. The modules

can use the data they receive for internal processing.

In addition, they can also modify this data in order to

inform downstream modules about special situations

such as anomalies which occurred, subset, number of

sheets, or document status.

supports all of your printing technologies and encoding

methods in order to design an automatic and

secure production system.

Whether you use OMR barcode lines, one of the numerous

barcode types, or space-saving 2D codes such

as Data Matrix - the Müller system supports you. OCR

oMR barcode reading

The simple paper processing solution.

Linear barcodes which can be

generated easily with all printing

processes are used to control the

Müller system. They are read either

directly with Müller OMR on

the basis of fibre optics technology

or with a camera system which

can also read other code types. The

OMR symbols can be used to operate

small to medium-sized systems.

Simple sequence control and/or

group control provides security.

1D codes / barcode reading

One dimensional barcodes are used

in a wide variety of paper processing

systems. They offer a large

range of encoding options so that

more complex systems can be controlled

easily. We offer a choice of

laser scanner or camera system to

read the barcodes. This selection is

based on your printing specifications

and read speed as well as possible

additional code types. Since

the number of characters can be

large, customer-specific information

used in the document surveillance

system can be stored in the

code in addition to the system control

In the area of plastic card processing, we provide the

reading technology required to read magnetic strips as

well as contact and wireless chip reading (RFID). Customized

2D codes / Data Matrix

2D codes are the latest development

in detection reliability. They

involve printing large amounts

of data in a very small space. The

„Data Matrix“ encoding method

includes integrated redundancy,

ensuring that the right results are

generated even if part of the code

is illegible. This is the reason that

this encoding method is standard

for all mail companies and in air

and rail traffic systems. 2D code

scanning camera systems are used

in Müller systems. They are able

to read all versions of 1D and 2D

codes as well as OMR. The cameras

are also equipped with a TCP/IP

Ethernet interface, which is used to

configure the cameras via a PC and

to make the read information and

the camera image available online.

Naturally, interfacing with a document

surveillance system is also

possible here.


oCR reading

You can also implement OCR in

the Müller systems if you use corresponding

camera systems. A predefined

set of character codes is

available, but new fonts can also

be learned with a „teach-in“ process.

As a rule, OCR files don‘t contain

any direct control information.

Instead, special analysis methods or

file-based system control methods

are used.

Whole page

reading at the input/output

A line scan camera is used to read

the entire page at the input to the

machine. Existing inserting marks

(Data-Matrix, Barcode, OMR) or

plain text (document/page number)

are interpreted within milliseconds

and used to operate the

machine. This gives you maximum

flexibility with regard to the type

of input, provides clear documentation

of the output, and even

allows you to perform quality

testing of the print/packaging.

When the system is used at the

machine output, it can even save

images of every single insert. At the

same time, it is fully and seamlessly

integrated with the machine. At the

machine input, the system operates

purely on a software configuration.

This means that annoying camera/

reader setup times are eliminated,

resulting in higher productivity,

flexibility, and reliability.

Processing of plastic cards

Our plastic card system supports all

encoding processes currently used

in this industry. Magnetic strip reading

(1-, 2-, 3-track), chip contact

methods, and wireless technology

(RFID) can all be used to control

your system. These reading technologies

are supported by all other

paper-based reading technologies

so that the card can be matched

to the correct carrier document

(‚Matching‘). In addition, a document

surveillance system is usually

mandatory and a file-based control

system is used here as well.





Making security traceable –

Document Surveillance

For comprehensive job definitions, being able to track

the path the document is taking through production

becomes essential.

Module 6988-DA, „Data output“

The „Data Output“ module can copy the form data

from a selected position in the Müller system to an external

terminal and monitor it in real time.

The module sends and receives data from a connected

PC through a serial interface (RS232). This allows the

data to be read in on an external PC with any terminal

program. The data is recorded and presented in the

ASCII format.

Müller Apparatebau also provides software which can

be used to perform specific tasks directly. Examples include

saving a status report (Mod. 6988-SR) or a system

to generate reprints (closed loop, Mod. 6988-DSS).

Mod. 6988-DA standard functions:

• Standard RS232 COM interface -

(3 wire RX TX Gnd) without handshake

• Definable transmission parameters, 9600-38400 Baud,

1-2 stop bits, without parity

• Configurable data output, ASCII characters according

to the document data

• Output of the number of sheets

(for grouping/stacking/inserts)

• Outputting the document status

(good – bad – error type)

• Data return signal after data output


This document surveillance process ensures that all

documents arrive completely and correctly at the end

so that you never lose continuity.

Module 6988-SR, „Status Report“

Anyone working with personalized documents would

like to know if everything is right. Recording and data

capture is everything in this regard - you can follow all

processes if your information is available in black and

„Status Report“ which can be used to store and prepare

the data supplied by a serial RS232 interface in an appropriate

on the PC or connected network component according

Module 6988-DSS, „Document Surveillance System“

Security plays an important role in post processing. The

traceability and monitoring of the route taken by individual

pieces is a prerequisite for the 100% guaranteed

mailing of your documents.

Müller Apparatebau provides the suitable tools:

The processing system and reading stations contained

in it interact to monitor the documents from the start

of the system to the end, and the transmitted data is

compared with a connected production management


Reprints are created on the basis of the resulting data,

and the loop is closed. We call this „closed-loop“ system

„DSS - Document Surveillance System“.

Communication with the Müller system software takes

place via several RS232 interfaces (Mod. 6988-DA) – the

total number depends on the number of reading systems

and monitoring modules in use.

The connection to the production management system

is made via a TCP/IP network (Ethernet), with the file

exchange taking place on the basis of target and actual


The Müller system transmits the status of every document

including time, date, machine type, operator, and

additional optional information.

Security backups and log files provide additional functionality.

Module 6670, „Variable insert Allocation MKS“

The „Variable Insert Allocation“ module is an interesting

expansion for a Müller multi-channel system with

multiple insert stations.

Special paper types sometimes require the use of a different

type of insert system. Mechanical modification

of the system is undesirable and also not required, because

we have the solution:

The PC software (Mod. 6670) allows you to modify the

allocation of insert stations (changing the selective

fetch information). This program is used for the targeted

replacement of the selective fetch information tied

to your documents.

This ensures that combinations which may be invalid

are not used. All changes can easily be undone at the

push of a button.

The current assignment is displayed graphically in

a manner similar to the layout of the multi-channel


Standard functions:

• Free choice of up to 10 selective insert stations

• Choice of multiple interface and display languages

• „STANDARD“ button to restore the standard

settings quickly

This software is the right extension if you, as the operator

of a Müller multi-channel system, always want to be

informed of the current system status.

The operator can access all information and data transmitted

to them via the RS232 interface from every feed

channel being monitored, at a glance. So the right

action can be taken immediately in case of a stop or

other problems.

The graphical interface matches the system design, and

the reference data are displayed directly in the graphic

of the respective module.

The software is able to run on Windows XP and higher

operating systems and is available in several languages.

Standard functions:

• The Match data are displayed clearly on the

system graphic, with the Slave and Band data

beside each other

• Choice of multiple interface and display languages

• Graphical progress indicator during operation

“Free Read Programming“ for oMR, BCR, 2D, oCR

Numerous types of read encoding are used in post-

processing today. In addition, existing systems are

always being expanded and adapted. Read systems

need to be modified as a result. The “Free Read

Programming“ software package is the tool you need

in order to handle such tasks independently.

Several model 6988-DA “Data Output” modules integrated

into the Müller system supply document data

via RS232 interfaces. The software described here

receives said data on a PC and decodes them according

to freely definable criteria. Then the converted data are

sent back to the Müller system.

With the basic version, OMR, BCR and 2D read system

scan be connected and their data freely evaluated

according to your specifications. Both machine control

and data control (e.g. sequencing, parity, matching,

plausibility checks etc.) can be defined by the user.

What happens to the document

is already specified at the time of

printing. On the other hand, there

are some applications in which

the documents don‘t contain any

control information. In these cases

the system control information is

stored in an external database and

assigned to the documents during

the process. This allows control of

the system to be affected in realtime

(the database can be modified

until shortly before processing of

the respective document). This results

in a high degree of flexibility,

and document surveillance is given

almost as a side effect.

The solution: An automatic sorting

tower with 200 bins and the required

number of upstream diverting

bins, as well as an intelligent camera

reading system and PC sorting

software. All documents are read

and stored as a list during an initial

step. Then this list is sorted

on the computer according to the

desired criteria; during the next

step, all documents are sorted for

real in the diverting bins, and final

sorting of the first 200 in the tower

is completed. The diverting bins

contain remaining groups of 200

sheets each, for which final sorting

is done in turn in the tower.
