English NCEA Level 3 Student Information, 2012
Aim
The Student’s aim is to attain up to 24
Credits in a Level 3 NCEA English
course which consists of:
• Three internal assessments of
Achievement Standards spread over
three terms (worth a maximum of 12
Credits); and;
• An end-of-year external examination
that assesses four Achievement
Standards (worth a maximum of 12
Credits).
The Importance of Attempting All
External Assessments
For entry to most courses, Universities now
require student results to include a fixed
number of NCEA external assessment
credits.
Students are therefore strongly advised to
complete ALL external assessments for
which they are entered, to the best of their
ability.
N.B. Merit or Excellence course
endorsements can assist entry to a
student’s preferred university course.
Course Endorsement provides recognition for
students who perform exceptionally well in
individual courses. It is in place across all
three NCEA levels. Students will gain an
endorsement for a course if, in a single school
year, they achieve:
• 14 or more credits at Merit or
Excellence, where
• at least 3 of these credits are from
externally-assessed standards and 3
credits from internally-assessed
standards.
Resubmissions and Reassessments
A re-submission opportunity will only be
offered once per Assessment. Get it right
first time. See Regulations following.
Derived Grade
In rare cases of a student’s public exam
result possibly being impaired by illness
or injury Students must note that practice
assessments may be used to generate a
derived grade (ie compassionate
consideration). Therefore, students must
achieve to the best of their ability in all
school-based assessments. Get it right first
time.
