PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION<br />

DESCRIPTION OF TOWN<br />

- SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION<br />

Cracow is one of the largest and oldest cities in Poland. The city is situated in southern Poland, 219 m above<br />

the sea level, in the close vicinity of the Beskids and the Tatra Mountains. The city, the former capital of<br />

Poland, has a history of more than one thousand years. The number of its inhabitants amounts to nearly<br />

800,000.<br />

For centuries Cracow was the capital of Poland, the seat of kings, drawing great scholars and artists from the<br />

whole world. Cracow has always been a meeting place of many cultures. It has been elected one of the<br />

European Cities of Culture to celebrate the year 2000.<br />

Cracow is the most famous and arguably the most beautiful city in Poland. It is among those few cities in<br />

Europe where the medieval town is still the vital centre of the modern metropolis. Cracow’s business, social<br />

and cultural lives are still centred in and around Rynek – the largest medieval market square in Europe. In<br />

1978, Cracow’s Old Town was entered in the UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list.<br />

- MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS<br />

Cracow is famous for its beautiful old architecture, boasting Europe's largest medieval market square. The<br />

city's unique atmosphere, however, is not only created by its amazing architecture but, in the first place, by<br />

numerous cultural events and great night life. The extraordinary artistic atmosphere has been the reason why<br />

Cracow has been awarded an honourable title of the European Capital of Culture. Cracow hosts a great<br />

number of festivals throughout the year, including film, classical music and photography, as well as the<br />

internationally famous festivals: for instance Festival of Jewish Culture, Jazz Festival, International Cracow<br />

Choir Festival, “Street Art” International Street Theatre Festival. The city also boasts some of the most<br />

renowned galleries and museums in the country and one of the European greatest theatre districts.<br />

There are over a hundred pubs and bars in the vicinity of Cracow's Market Square alone, most in the cellars of<br />

historic buildings, hosting to exhibitions, jazz concerts or experimental drama. All necessary information<br />

Cracow Airport (http://www.krakowairport.pl/en) is located around 15 kilometers from the city centre -<br />

Balice, ul. kpt. Medweckiego 1, tel. + 48 12 285 5120, 12 639 31 27.<br />

Access to the airport: by car: http://www.krakowairport.pl/en/36/176/173/en; by train: airport railway station is<br />

aprox. 200m away from the international terminal; by bus: bus stops within the airport’s premises are located<br />

The railway station: opposite Cracow University of Economics (5 minutes’ walk and a short walk from the<br />

city centre).<br />

The bus/coach station is located on ul. Wita Stwosza (east side of the railway station).<br />

- TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE)<br />

The city transportation system in Cracow consists of trams and buses which are frequent, inexpensive and<br />

convenient. There are term tickets as well as daily, monthly, and hourly tickets or passes available.<br />

The same tickets are used for buses and for trams. Price for a single ticket: 3,80 PLN. Please note: to get a<br />

discount on public transportation in Cracow (cost of the tickets: any one journey - 1,90 PLN, short-term (20<br />

minutes) – 1,40 PLN) students should have their student ID cards. Tickets should be validated immediately<br />

upon entering a bus or a tram by means of one of the ticket punching machines inside the vehicle.<br />

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION<br />

Cracow University of Economics (CUE) is the largest school of economics in Poland and the third biggest<br />

university in Cracow. CUE was established in 1925. Its 17-acre campus is located in the vicinity of historical<br />

medieval Old Town of Cracow. The University’s four faculties: Economics and International Relations,<br />

Finance, Commodity Science and Management offer 13 majors and 45 courses. The number of students<br />

currently enrolled at Cracow University of Economics is estimated at more than 21000.<br />

Cracow University of Economics was the first institution of higher education in Poland to introduce studies in<br />

English in the early 1990s.<br />

CUE maintains close contacts and co-operation with well over 200 foreign universities as well as many<br />

international organizations and institutions, including businesses.<br />

The EILC will be organized by the International Programmes Office which was established at the University in<br />

1994. Since 1997 the IPO has coordinated a semester programme on economics and business in English called<br />

“the English Track” for Polish and international students. The IPO has also coordinated cooperation with<br />

around 200 partner universities from all over the world, organized and coordinated Summer Schools and<br />

Erasmus Intensive Programmes. The IPO has initiated new educational programmes such as:<br />

The Scandinavian Module and Seminars with Professionals.<br />

ACCOMMODATION<br />

The organizer offers three options of accommodation for selected students:<br />

The STANDARD accommodation offers comprises of twin rooms. There is one bathroom in each room and a<br />

kitchen on each floor. Each room has a telephone (extension for connections within the Campus), 2 glasses and<br />

a free Internet access. In each room the towels, bed-clothes and small refrigerator are provided. The kettles are<br />

available on each 2 or 3 rooms.<br />

Cost: 700 zloty (about 170 Euro) per 4 weeks/per person. It is mandatory to rent a room in the dormitory for<br />

the whole period.<br />

The CUE’s Sports Centre offers students the possibility to practice a wide variety of sports disciplines such as:<br />

The swimming pool and sauna are located on the campus (available from 7 till 22 every day except weekends;<br />

price: 10 PLN (zloty) per 45 min, price of sauna: 25 PLN (zloty) per 1 hour). The price of rent of the tennis<br />

court is 20 PLN (zloty) per 1 hour.<br />

<strong>LANGUAGE</strong> COMPONENT<br />

- SHORT DESCRIPTION OF <strong>LANGUAGE</strong> COMPONENT: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS<br />

The main aim of EILC is to enable students to acquire basic knowledge of the Polish language. The course also<br />

promotes Poland, its culture and tradition. Upon completion of the course students will be able to understand<br />

basic dialogues, deal with everyday situations, and participate in them independently by taking on particular<br />

communicative roles such as those of a customer, traveler, patient or a student. Grammar rules presented in a<br />

practical way will enable students to understand correct rules of language and create independent utterances.<br />

Specialist terminology connected with particular types of work which is included in the programme will aid<br />

learners in communication and socializing with their colleagues at work, for example during student<br />

internships in Polish companies.<br />

The basic method used in EILC entails communicative approach to learning whose main aim is to teach<br />

students to communicate effectively using grammar to the extent that is necessary to understand utterances.<br />

Teaching materials used during classes will include innovative written materials prepared according to the<br />

requirements of A1 level of the European Language Levels System (CEFR), audiovisual materials such as:<br />

videos, songs, recordings, as well as simulation and outdoor games, multimedia presentations and outdoor<br />

classes. Classes will be delivered in the form of lectures and seminars, and will be based on individual work,<br />

work in pairs, teamwork and tandems. The aim of the course is to improve all levels of language performance;<br />

methods of teaching will be selected to achieve this aim. Students will have the opportunity to participate in<br />

one-to-one tutorials with their teacher. Vocabulary and grammar taught during the course will be used in<br />

dialogues modeled on real-life conversations as well as in everyday situations during outdoor classes organized<br />

as part of the workshops. Classes will be delivered only in Polish, which will ensure the best teaching results<br />

and enable students to fully benefit from the course.<br />

After two weeks of the course all students will write a mid-term exam to check their knowledge. After the<br />

whole course every student is required to take the final examination for A1 level.<br />

The final overall grade comprises: the partial test grade (30%), final examination grade (50%: written exam<br />

(30%) and oral exam (20%)).<br />

Students will also be assessed in terms of their in-class work, homework and active participation in workshops<br />

(20%).<br />

Participation in classes is obligatory; one-time unexcused absence is allowed (i.e. one day of classes). For their<br />

participation in the course, students will be awarded 5 ECTS points. At the end of the course students will<br />

receive a certificate in English language.<br />

The Cultural Component consists of lectures in the field of Polish history, customs and culture (films, theatre,<br />

music), socio-economic implications of global economic crises and intercultural communication.<br />

In addition, outdoor games, movie evenings and museum visits are prepared.<br />

part is Rysy (2,499 metres).<br />

Wieliczka – a monumental 700-year-old salt mine, listed by UNESCO among the treasures of the World<br />

Heritage, open to visitors.<br />
