Issue No. 27 17 October, 2008
Lord show us
how to live
with temporal
things and
still involve
You in our
lives
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
At our College Assembly this Friday, the student community will farewell the Year
12 students, who complete their formal classes for the year next Wednesday in
order to concentrate on revision and study in preparation for their final exams,
commencing at the end of the month. We will acknowledge their development
over the years of their secondary education, honour the experiences that have
formed part of that development and recognise their contribution to the
Whitefriars College community. We will stand with them in solidarity and support,
wishing them well for their forthcoming exams and for all the life and career
developments and experiences that the future holds.
At this same Assembly, we will also acknowledge the transfer of student leadership
from the College and House Captains of 2008 to those for 2009. Out thanks will
be extended to our outgoing Captains, especially College Captain, Matthew
McLeod, and Vice Captains, Michael O’Connor and John Condello. Their leadership,
by the manner in which they have conducted themselves and related to students
and staff, along with their organisation of many activities, especially those
promoted by the SRC, has helped develop a harmonious, supportive and united
spirit in the College. They have been excellent ambassadors for the College in the
many arenas in which they have represented us and have conducted themselves
as exemplary Whitefriars “gentle men” at all times. I thank them for their
contribution and wish them well for the leadership opportunities which will
undoubtedly come their way in the future. These acknowledgements and good
wishes will be further underlined at the Year 12 Mass of Thanksgiving next
Tuesday night, their Farewell Breakfast on Thursday morning and, then, after
exams are finished, at the Valedictory Dinner.
The winners of the Effective Speaking Competitions in Years 7-10, along with high
achievers in the Italian Speaking and Indonesian Oral Competitions and the AMEB
Music exams will also be recognised and applauded. We congratulate all students
who have attained excellence in these endeavours and encourage all to do their
best in whatever they take on – and particularly in their studies as the end of the
year approaches.
Many students, accompanied by their parents, attended the large, sad and moving
funeral of Paul Hewald last Monday. Reuben Meade (12C5) spoke excellently in
tribute to Paul on behalf of the Whitefriars students and Bill Campbell-Brennan
(10C4) and Alex Macrae (10C6) paid moving tributes as friends. As we continue
to grieve Paul’s loss and struggle with the mystery of it all, we draw strength and
support from the solidarity in which we stand with each other in our grief, from the
professional assistance which our Counsellors and Chaplains provide, from the
support we receive from the Catholic Education community and from our hope in
God’s eternal love. May Paul rest in peace.
We look forward to the VCE Visual Arts Exhibition which opens this Friday night,
running through next week and concluding with Open Day on Sunday week, 26
October. If you have a chance, pay a visit to the Exhibition, which is mounted in
the Functions Room at the College. My preview of it has confirmed that there is,
as usual, an amazing array of exceptionally high quality work on display.
Congratulations to all the artists.
Congratulations, too, to the Intermediate Basketball team which took out the State
Schoolboy Championships last Friday night and to the Senior team on a gallant
runners-up performance. The Senior Volleyball team which competed in the
statewide Schools Tournament last weekend also performed admirably and are to
be congratulated on their efforts.
Please spread the word among families who are considering secondary schools for
their sons that we are holding our Open Day next Sunday, 26 October, with
Information Sessions and Tours being conducted at 10:45am, 11:45am and
12:45pm.
Finally, I also commend to your prayers, along with Paul Hewald, the grandmother
of Tim Baker (8S1) and grandfather of Jarryd Janson (7A7) who died recently.
May they rest in peace.
Students’ Corner
Captain’s Address – Friday 17 October 2008
Every time I have sat in a Whitefriar assembly and I heard the Captains say “make
the most of your time because it will be gone before you know it”, I always figured
that it was just one of those things that was said because the Captain before them
had said it, but it’s not until your time as a Whitefriars student is almost up that
you begin to see that the time does go in a blink and everything that you never
got around to doing has passed by you. While our Year level is certainly excited
about the opportunities that are presented to us in life after Whitefriars, we will all
have our own regrets about time that we wasted while we were at the College.
So I will join the long line of Captains that have said these words and urge you all
to make the most of your time here at Whitefriars because it will be gone before
you know it.
I must confess that when planning out this goodbye address I had a strong sense of
nostalgia about what to say. It was brought back to when I first started at the
College five years ago, to my very first College Assembly. The College Captain of
the time, Paul Stag, talked to us about what geese have to teach us about
teamwork. He talked about how when the geese fly each goose flaps its wings and
creates an ‘uplift’ for the other birds that follow and this “V” formation allows the
birds to fly a lot further than if they were undertaking the journey by themselves.
When a goose gets injured or sick and is unable to keep flying, two geese will drop
out of the formation and follow the other one down to help protect it. They wait
with the goose until it is healthy enough to fly again. They will then join another
flock of geese and catch up to their old flock. This amazing feat shows that like the
geese, if we work together as a group we will reach our goals faster and easier
through supporting each other. He closed with “if we have as much sense as geese,
we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as times where everything
is fine”.
These words have stuck in the mind of the Year 12 boys since the beginning of their
Whitefriars journey. I look at these guys, my colleagues, my fellow students, my
friends and I see that we have become akin to the flock of geese. Our time together
in the College has brought us together and made us a group of guys who not only
work together but look out for one another at all times. Just because their time at
Whitefriars is ending doesn’t mean that the bond of our years together will
disappear. We will not only remain close as a Year level but stay close to the
College that turned us into gentlemen. Through their combined leadership, the VCE
class of 2008 has not only left a strong imprint on the College but have travelled
the full circle of their journey.
Throughout this year I’ve shared with you some of my favourite stories about
Teamwork from the dominoes stackers to Charles Plumb’s parachutes. I’d like to
share one last story with you about “The Great Zumbrati”. The story goes that upon
completing a highly dangerous tightrope walk over Niagara Falls in appalling wind
and rain, 'The Great Zumbrati' was met by an enthusiastic fan, who urged him to
make a return trip across the tightrope except this time pushing a wheelbarrow,
which the spectator had thoughtfully brought along. The Great Zumbrati was
reluctant, given the terrible conditions, but the supporter pressed him, "You can do
it - I know you can," he urged. “You really believe I can do it" asked Zumbrati.
"Yes - definitely - you can do it." the supporter gushed. "Okay," said Zumbrati, "Get
in the wheelbarrow...". This simple story shows that being an effective team
member doesn’t just require words of support. You have to back them up with trust
and action if you truly want the most from your team. From my time at Whitefriars
it has always been the case where there have been plenty of guys and teachers
who have been willing to get behind each other and jump in the wheelbarrow and
support each other to achieve their goals.
The amazing opportunity to be the College Captain has been one that I’ve had
great pride in upholding this year. I’ve loved every minute of it and have gained
some fantastic experience from it. However if it wasn’t for the outstanding talents
of many others then my job would have been very difficult. Mick, John and Shaun
have worked hard throughout this year and have kept all events running smoothly.
They are fantastic guys who were great to work with not only providing useful ideas
and suggestions about how to make things better but also in their dedication to the
role and the College. Likewise the SRC has done an exceptional job this year and
have dived into projects and led by example. There have been so many teachers
that have lent their hand to helping us this year especially Mr O’Donaghue who has
worked closely with the SRC and has been pivotal in helping ensure that big SRC
activities have been a success. I’d like to thank you all for your help this year
because without you nothing could have been achieved.
Good-bye and good luck to everyone with the rest of the year.
Memorial Book
Each year we acknowledge the 2 nd of November as a special day in the Church’s
calendar as it is the ‘Commemoration Day for All the Faithful Departed’ (All Souls
Day). This feast, dating back to the 11th Century, is a special time for us to
remember all of those who have passed away. The story of how the Church first
begun celebrating All Soul’s day goes back to the middle of the 11th century,
when St. Odilo, the abbot of Cluny (France), said that all Cluniac monasteries were
to offer special prayers on November 2 nd , the day after the feast of All Saints. The
custom spread from Cluny and was adopted throughout the entire Roman Catholic
Church. Now we the entire Church celebrate November 2 nd as All Soul's Day.
For us here at Whitefriars College, we would like to continue with this tradition and
are inviting all Students, Staff and Community Members to submit the names of
family members (immediate and extended) who have gone to their eternal rest, so
we can remember and pray for them.
All names will be added with those we received last year and entered into our
Memorial Book and placed in the College Chapel and prayed for throughout the
month of November.
Please fill out the Prayer Slip below and return it to me over the next few weeks,
so they could be included into our Whitefriars Community Memorial Book.
Sport Report
Firstly, I would like to apologise to the students and families who had responded to the Sport Presentation Night invitations.
Unfortunately we had to cancel the night due to the low number of responses. The Presentation of Awards, Colours and
Premiership Pennants will be done at Lunchtime Events today and on Monday for Term 3 Sport. The disappointing aspect of
this was that the Sport Captains had done a tremendous amount of work preparing for the night. Hopefully we will see great
support for future events so that we can give our students the recognition they deserve.
Last Friday night was a fantastic event at Waverley Basketball Stadium which truly displayed the spirit at Whitefriars. Our Year
10 team crowned themselves as Victorian Champions in an early game with a super performance over Box Hill Secondary
College. The crowd started to flow in for the evening game against Caulfield Grammar. Although we lost the game we certainly
impressed everyone there with our great support from students, staff and parents. The officials and opposition made comment
on how our crowd provided a great atmosphere. My thanks to Mr Brad Bird and Mr Duncan Berg, who did a great job getting
the squads so well prepared. I would also like to thank our players who are so committed to keeping Whitefriars at the top of
Basketball in Victoria. In particular, my thanks to our Basketball Captain, Liam Gibcus. His leadership was amazing.
Our first venture into Victorian Schools Cup Volleyball was also successful with the team winning 4 out of the 6 matches over
the weekend to finish in fifth place. Mr Heath McGregor and our Captain, Luke Renehan, have certainly set a platform for our
future stars to build on to give our players every chance to improve.
This week we appointed our new Sport Captains for 2009. These boys participated in the ACC Leadership Workshop on
Wednesday and some of them have already begun their tasks for next year by getting around to some Junior squads. Our
Sport leaders for 2009 are listed below.
All of the Year 7-10 seasons are underway with a positive start across the board.
