This weekend at the Cowboy Capitol 5D Finals at Lone Star Arena located in Stephenville, TX, one tough barrel racer, Linda Hart, and her 10 year old Dashin Is Easy gelding, Juwanna Man, outran over 1000 other barrel racers to win the big payout at one of the toughest barrel races in the country. Her take home for the weekend was $3,253. This Munday, TX cowgirl took a little time from looking after cattle on wheat pasture to travel to the CC5D Finals. Hart was raised up cowboying, “My Daddy was a cowboy and I was just raised up in it.” said Hart. She grew up roping mainly and never really had a barrel horse when she was younger but then over the years she started training barrel horses for other people. Then her life changed course pretty rapidly. In 1990, she was in the middle of training barrel horses and developing a very talented futurity mare, Dancing On Ice, when life took her on a path no one would choose. Hart came down with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. A devastating disease where the body’s immune system attacks it’s own nervous system. Hart to lost muscle mass and was paralyzed from the face down on her right side due to the disease. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a took this 5’8” cowgirl from 130 pounds all the way down to 75 pounds. “The doctor told me I would never recover. I had a lot of people with the Syndrome call me after I recovered and ask me what I had done to get better and I just told them, God wasn’t through with me yet!” Hart quipped. It took her almost 15 years to fully recover back to riding like she could before being stricken with Guillain- Barre. Then soon after, Juwanna Man came into her life to change it’s trajectory once again. One day a Spanish man, Miguel, who buys cattle for Hart and her husband showed up with a 5 year old Dashin Is Easy gelding that he was sure if she trained for barrels and sold, they would both make a lot of money on him. She laughed then, but it is safe to say after his most recent win, Juwanna Man could definitely be sold for a lot of money. Over time, she did agree to start him on barrels, they partnered on him at first and eventually she bought him outright. He was put on the back burner for a couple years but the sale of one of her good horses forced Hart to work with him. It was a slow process taking a lot of outside riding, exhibitions and hauling. But according to Hart, “He has turned out to be a blessing! He is just a real sweetheart, gives me his all, and he just loves it” Hart and Juwanna Man have worked their way to the top levels of the tough Texas competition over the last couple years. At the CC5D Finals, Friday didn’t go as planned as they hit the second and third barrel. Hart knew she had to change plans for Saturday. “I just said, “God I am giving it to you” Hart said, then the pair went down the alley and smoked a run that stopped the clock Mitey Easy Dash si 100 Dashin Is Easy si 103 Queenies Dash si 93 Juwanna Man si 83 2002 Sorrel Gelding Groovy tb Holdin Heaven Sister Caprica si 82 Owner/Rider: Linda Hart; Breeder: Dale Holt in a quick 15.148 which took the lead for the weekend. “I know he is of that caliber when he runs good. It was just a humbling feeling to run with that tough of competition and outrun over 1000 other runners.” said Hart. The future for this 55 year old barrel racer is to continue hitting the big barrel races close enough to her Munday home and not haul Juwanna Man unless there is some good money up. “I’m doing great and I would love to go down the road to the PRCA rodeos but I know physically I just can’t do that. I might get my rookie card and take him (Juwanna Man) to some of these closer rodeos.” commented Hart. If you are in Texas at a barrel race or rodeo and there is good money up, you can bet you will probably have to beat Hart and Juwanna Man to get the big check!
