Seawater Scrubbing Technology
Inert Gas Systems

A greener future is a
better future
Our pioneering gas scrubbing
technology is a commercially
viable alternative to costly low
Sulphur content distillates, and
complies with new IMO and EU
regulations on emissions.
2
The shipping industry is a global industry and the emissions from
shipping affect large areas and a huge number of people. As a
consequence the marine industry will in the coming years face
tougher legislation on emissions around the world. These rules
and regulations will force the marine industry to make difficult
choices, however the benefits are a much cleaner air, resulting in
a greener future for us all.
The rules range from the International Maritime Organization’s
MARPOL Annex VI regulation 4 as detailed in resolution MEPC
184(59) to the European Union Directives 2005/33/EC and
1999/32/EC. Some areas may also be faced with national or
local rules.
Opting for Hamworthy Krystallon sea water scrubbing
technology instead of switching fuel means;
4 Lower operating costs through access to less costly fuel
4 Avoiding fuel switching, storage and availability issues
4 Reducing your operational impact on the environment
Hamworthy Krystallon has unparalleled know-how and
experience from both installations in the field and from a
dedicated test and development centre in Norway.

Lowest cost for meeting IMO MARPOL
Annex VI requirements
Business as usual is no longer an option. To comply with incoming rules,
ship owners must switch to costly low Sulphur fuel, or choose abatement
technology.
Legislation has already had an effect on the fuel markets in the
regulated areas, and this is expected to increase even further in
2015 when the 0.1% fuel Sulphur limit enters into force in the
designated Emission Control Areas (ECA).
Hamworthy Krystallon’s exhaust gas cleaning system will provide
compliance with all currently adopted and proposed regulations,
removing up to 98% of the Sulphur and 70% to 90% of the
particulate matter (PM) from exhaust gas emissions. Under the
equivalence section of the IMO regulations, this provides full
compliance with the regulations. With Hamworthy Krystallon`s
exhaust gas cleaning system, owners and operators can avoid
the additional costs of switching, sourcing and using cleaner
fuels, allowing continued use of low cost environmentally friendly
residual fuel.
The scrubbing process
The Hamworthy Krystallon Seawater Scrubber system is based on the
same process used in our Inert Gas scrubber systems for almost 50 years.
The Hamworthy Krystallon Seawater Scrubber technology is suitable for both new build and retrofit and is a simple, globally
accepted, proven solution.
1. VENTURI SECTION
The exhaust gas enters the Venturi section and is cooled down and
saturated with a seawater spray. This seawater spray also provides an
ejector effect, reducing the total pressure drop over the system.
2. BUBBLE PLATE
The gas flow is turned upwards and led through a patented bubble
plate arrangement. This unique arrangement gives a very turbulent
mixing between the exhaust gas and the seawater and also allows for a
higher gas velocity through the scrubber, which again leads to a smaller
footprint, without an increase in pressure drop.
3. WET fILTER
After the bubble plate there is a wet filter to polish remaining Sulphur
from the gas and a demister to avoid carry-over of water droplets in the
cleaned gas.
Discharge
WASH WATER
The wash water is monitored for pH, PAH (Hydrocarbons), turbidity and
temperature at the inlet and the outlet. The discharge from the scrubber is
passed through a hydro cyclone to remove sludge to make sure it is in line
with the discharge criteria of MEPC 184(59).
SLUDGE
The particulate matter captured in the wash water is transferred to a small
sludge tank. The collected sludge is non-hazardous, but must be disposed
of to shore.

Alternative scrubber arrangements
Having the largest installed base of any marine sea water
scrubber supplier and a dedicated test laboratory, has enabled
us to optimize our product to be reliable, easy to operate and
easy to install. All new technologies and developments are
thoroughly tested before being released to the commercial
market.
Our system is designed in a modular way to provide both
flexibility and reliable operations. A number of different features
can therefore easily be added to account for different operating
preferences or requirements.
4 Improved Particulate Matter (PM) capture
4 fan assisted for lower back pressure
4 Re-oxygenation of wash water
4 Combined multi inlet scrubber
4 Hybrid system
4 Closed loop
4 NaOH injection for improved pH recovery in brackish water
4 De-plume facility to avoid a potential steam plume
generation
Particulate Matter
Carbon as a substance is not toxic, but its particulate size
makes it dangerous for humans and animals. Emissions from
shipping has been identified as a cause of cancer in coastal
regions and melting ice caps due to PM pollution. There are few
regulations on PM pollution from ships today, but many expect
that strict regulations will appear for PM in the future.
Over the last five years Hamworthy Krystallon has provided
MEPC with Environmental Impact Assessment data from our
units installed on “Pride of Kent” and on “Zaandam”. Much of
the collected data has been incorporated into MEPC 184(59),
particularly with regards to section 10 wash water discharge
criteria. Hamworthy Krystallon meets all the limits listed for sea
and air emissions. The exhaust is gas is continuously monitored,
and the equipment used is MED approved.
Through remote reporting and secure data storage of system
performance and GPS monitoring position, Hamworthy
Krystallon is able to demonstrate the operational performance
of the scrubber.
