Whatever It Takes!
What is Full-Day Kindergarten
In addition to the usual half-day kindergarten program, we are hoping
to add an optional full-day program. The tuition-based full-day
kindergarten would provide enrichment activities that enhance the
kindergarten curriculum.
Children benefit from the gift of time to deepen, enrich, and explore
the learning activities, tasks, and materials presented in the half-day
program.
While the content is not increased in the full-day program, Hawthorn
District 73 provides a continuous learning model to meet the
individual learning needs of each child.
A Typical Full-Day Schedule Includes…
All of the components of the half-day session:
• Whole group instruction for literacy and math
• Small group literacy instruction
Full-Day Kindergarten
Provides
In addition to all the half-day
components, the full day
provides:
• An Illinois certified teacher
full day
• Guided expansion and
enrichment of the
curriculum by a certified
teacher
• Exploratory play based on
the curriculum
• Learning center choice time
• 40-minute lunch/recess time
• Rest or quiet activity time
• Guided and independent practice
• Art, music, physical education and library
• Fine motor development

Full-Day Kindergarten Plan
A tuition-based full-day session will be offered in each
elementary school that achieves a minimum of 25 tuitionpaying
students.

Applications will be accepted at the start of kindergarten
registration, which begins early February each year.
Enrollment in the parents’ school of choice is on a lottery
and/or first-come, first-served basis.
First priority is given to resident applicants. Non-resident,
teacher and staff applicants will be considered for placement
in our program after the conclusion and selection of resident
applications in early May each year.
The half-day session will continue to be provided with open
enrollment.
The District will continue to offer through a third-party
provider, fee-based extended care services before and after
school.
Advantages of a Full-Day
Session include:

reinforcement, and enrichment.
Greater continuity of day-to-day activities in
a continuous learning environment.
Fewer transitions and changes for students
who may attend child care the other half of
the day.
More time to develop social skills through
play and interaction with classmates.

• Kindergarten is not mandatory in Illinois.
• Tuition for a full day program is charged to cover the
costs incurred by the District in providing a full day
program.
• Tuition also provides additional revenue for the District,
while at the same time offering an affordable option for
parents that enriches the half-day kindergarten program.
• The tuition for full-day kindergarten does not include
costs for before or after school care.
• There is a non refundable $100 fee due at the time of
registration. This fee does not apply to the full-year
tuition cost of $4,000, which can be paid in installments.
