Four from Teacher <strong>Education</strong><br />
Honored with <strong>University</strong> Awards<br />
Four members <strong>of</strong> the department <strong>of</strong><br />
teacher education have been recognized<br />
with university-wide awards for<br />
distinguished service and teaching.<br />
The award recipients are Lynn Fendler,<br />
Randi Nevins Stanulis, Sharon Anderson<br />
Schwille and Marcy Britta Wood.<br />
They were honored at the annual<br />
Awards Convocation, featuring the<br />
president’s annual <strong>State</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />
Address, on Feb. 8 at the Wharton<br />
Center’s Pasant Theatre.<br />
Fendler, an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
<strong>of</strong> teacher education, was one <strong>of</strong> six<br />
honored with the Teacher-Scholar<br />
Award in recognition <strong>of</strong> dedication<br />
and success in teaching. Her research<br />
explores what it means to be educated<br />
in particular historical and political<br />
contexts. She is also interested<br />
in critical and genealogical examinations<br />
<strong>of</strong> the relations among knowledge,<br />
reason, discipline and power.<br />
She received her Ph.D. from the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin–Madison.<br />
Stanulis, a Ph.D graduate <strong>of</strong> MSU<br />
who serves as associate chairperson<br />
<strong>of</strong> the department <strong>of</strong> teacher education,<br />
was honored along with Sharon<br />
Banks, Ph.D., superintendent <strong>of</strong> Lansing<br />
Public Schools, with the Outreach<br />
Scholarship Community Partnership<br />
Awards in recognition <strong>of</strong> mutually<br />
beneficial sustained campus-community<br />
research partnerships. Their collaborative<br />
outreach partnership draws<br />
school principals, mentor teachers and<br />
beginning teachers from the Lansing<br />
School District to create a structure in<br />
which mentors are prepared for and<br />
supported in working with the teachers<br />
they mentor on substantive issues<br />
<strong>of</strong> teaching. Stanulis is a nationally<br />
recognized scholar on mentoring and<br />
teacher induction.<br />
Schwille, who received her Ph.D.<br />
from MSU, was one <strong>of</strong> four honored<br />
with the Distinguished Academic<br />
Staff Awards in recognition <strong>of</strong> their<br />
significant accomplishments and distinguished<br />
careers. She coordinates<br />
the Teacher Preparation Program, and<br />
serves as assistant to the chairperson<br />
<strong>of</strong> the teacher education department.<br />

Her research centers on mentoring<br />
beginning teachers and her interests<br />
include induction for new teachers<br />
and teacher learning.<br />
Wood, a doctoral student in curriculum,<br />
teaching and educational policy<br />
who focuses on elementary math<br />
education, was one <strong>of</strong> six honored<br />
with an Excellence-in-Teaching Citation,<br />
awarded to graduate assistants in<br />
recognition <strong>of</strong> dedication and success<br />
in meeting classroom responsibilities.<br />
She serves as a graduate assistant to<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Michael Battista.<br />
“I am very pleased that these colleagues<br />
are being honored for their<br />
important contributions,” said Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Mary Lundeberg, department<br />
chairperson. “We have outstanding<br />
people in the department <strong>of</strong> teacher<br />
education. These awards point to their<br />
stellar accomplishments.”<br />
