Początki historii Oleśnicy nie są znane.
Brak jest wcześniejszych źródeł pisanych.
Wiadomo, że w 1214 r. istniała
osada targowa przy znanym już w starożytności
szlaku handlowym, nazwanym
później „bursztynowym”. Najstarszym
znanym i niepodważalnym dokumentem,
w którym mowa jest o Oleśnicy jest
dokument księcia Henryka I Brodatego,
pochodzący z 1230 r. Wówczas istniał
już gród obronny, w którym od 1247 r.
rezydował kasztelan sprawujący w imieniu
księcia władzę wojskową i administracyjną.
Po podziale Śląska, Oleśnica
znalazła się w księstwie wrocławskim.
Przełomową datą w historii Oleśnicy był
dzień 22 lutego 1255 r. W dniu tym książę
wrocławski Henryk III Biały wystawił
dokument lokacyjny nadając prawa
miejskie na prawie średzkim. Wskazał
w nim zasadźców Alberta i Richolfa, którym
zlecił przeprowadzenie lokacji, czyli
m.in. wytyczenie planu miasta, działek
osadniczych, wzniesienie struktury
obronnej, sprowadzenie osadników, zorganizowanie
handlu itp. W 1294 r. miasto
zostało włączone do księstwa głogowskiego,
a po jego podziale w 1312 r. do
nowo powstałego księstwa oleśnickiego.
W 1320 r. Oleśnica została stolicą księstwa
i miastem rezydencjalnym założyciela
oleśnickiej gałęzi Piastów, księcia
Konrada I. Rozpoczął on rozbudowę zamku
i budowę ceglanych murów obronnych.
W krótkim czasie pojawiła się rada
miejska i burmistrz, nastąpił intensywny
rozwój życia religijnego. Książę Konrad
II funduje w Oleśnicy nowe opactwo dla
benedyktynów słowiańskich sprowadzonych
z Pragi. W 1407 r. wykupiono
The oldest known and undisputed document
which mentions Oleśnica is the one of Silesian
duke, Henry I the Bearded, dated 1230.
It is a known fact that on the trade route, later
called ‘amber’, a market and defensive
settlement had existed before. A document
from 1247 mentions castellan Cieszęta, although
there are no known documents stating
that there was a castellany in Oleśnica.
He might have served as a castle governor
only. Following the division of Silesia (1248)
Oleśnica became part of the Duchy of Wrocław.
Turning point in history of Oleśnica
was 22 February 1255. On that day, Henry
III the White, the Duke of Wrocław, issued
the incorporation charter, granting Oleśnica
city rights on Środa Śląska rights. Albert
and Richolf were appointed the founders and
were instructed to set town layout and settlement
lots, to raise defence structure, bring
the settlers, organize the trade etc. In 1294
the town was incorporated into the Duchy
of Głogów and after its division in 1312 into
the newly created Duchy of Oleśnica and Namysłów,
which existed in 1312-1313, jointly
ruled by the sons of Henry III, the Duke of
Głogów - Bolesław and Konrad. At that time
this territory was divided. The independent
Duchy of Oleśnica was created in 1313 and
was passed on to Duke Bolesław who, as it
may be assumed from his documents, permanently
resided in Oleśnica The remaining
part fell to Duke Konrad. Following Bolesław’s
death (1320 or 1321) its province was
merged with the duchy of Konrad. Konrad
moves to Oleśnica, which becomes duke’s
residential town, and from then on the duke
appears in historic papers as Konrad I. He
started the construction of a masonry castle
and brick town walls. Soon, town council and
