„The Lunchbox“ nominated
for BAFTA Awards
“The Lunchbox” has been nominated
for the BAFTA Awards in the Foreign
Film Category. The Irrfan Khan-Nimrat
Kaur starrer was released in India in
2013, but was screened in Britain only
in 2014. An elated Ritesh Batra says,
“It's an honour to be nominated alongside
the finest films of the year, much
credit to my whole team and the work
we did together. It's a good validation
to tell Indian stories to the world. If we
don't tell our stories, no one else will.”
The director worked against all odds to
make ‘The Lunchbox’ and added: “The
film's budget was very small. And only
50 percent of the money came from
India. The rest we had to generate
from outside India. There was also a
German and a French producer. So
that money which was raised from
France and Germany had to be used
in those countries. That is the rule.
We did the sound in Germany. We
also had a German music composer.
And we did the colours in France. I'd
still like to make my films around the
world. Such collaboration brings a lot
to the table. Every producer adopted
the film. There was no creative confusion.”
Irrfan Khan who not only played
the widower-hero in “The
Lunchbox” but also co-produced the
film says: “The ongoing triumph of
the film is a reminder that stories
from India could engage and entertain
a universal audience.” The BAFTA
Awards ceremony will be held on 8th
February, 2015.
Hrithik Roshan in
„Mohenjo“
Hrithik Roshan's upcoming film
“Mohenjo Daro’s” release date has
been announced. Disney & Ashutosh
Gowariker Production Pvt. Ltd.
(AGPPL) announced the release of
“Mohenjo Daro” for 12th August 2016.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar,
“Mohenjo Daro” is an epic love story,
set during the Indus Valley Civilization.
The film marks the debut of
Pooja Hegde in Bollywood, who stars
opposite Hrithik Roshan. The film will
have high octane stunts and hence,
Hrithik Roshan is undergoing fitness
training. Another name has been added
to the lead cast and it is none
other than Kabir Bedi. The veteran
actor will be seen in the role of a villain
in the film.
Riteish Deshmukh in
„Masti 3“
Riteish Deshmukh, who is enjoying
his fatherhood after the birth of his son
in December, suddenly seems to have
had a change of mind. The actor had
earlier claimed that he won't be doing
any sex comedies but it’s in the news
that he will be seen playing one of the
leads in “Masti 3”. While the first installment
of this series, “Masti” had been
a sleeper hit, “Grand Masti “became
the first sex comedy to enter the 100
Riteish Deshkukh
crore club in Bollywood. Since the
record breaking success of the sequel,
the makers have been toying with the
idea of a third installment. However,
then, Riteish Deshmukh had stated
that he is done with sex comedies
since there is nothing new that he can
offer in this genre. But now, it seems
that the script of “Masti 3” has left such
an impact on his mind that the actor
agreed to do the film. Excited about
the latest turn of events, director Indra
Kumar stated that Riteish Deshmukh
was really convinced about the film
when he heard the script and also
expressed his happiness over collaborating
with him once again.
Ajay Devgn in Milan
Luthria’s next film
„Baadshaho“
Milan Luthria and Bhushan Kumar decided
on making their next film
“Baadshaho” with Ajay Devgn. T-Series
brings back the intense actor -
director jodi of “Once Upon A Time in
Mumbai” - Ajay Devgn and Milan Luthria
in the emotional drama with action
“Baadshaho”. Milan Luthria, who has
done three films with Ajay earlier –
“Kachche Dhaage”, “Chori Chori” and
“Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai” says,
“Ajay has always ended up deciding on
doing all my earlier films within just
half an hour. Ajay is a very impatient
man. For ‘Baadshaho’ too, I called him
and said how I was very excited about
the film and wanted to come and narrate
it to him. He was shooting and as
soon as I entered his van, he said,
Ajay Devgn
`Bol, bol, bol kya hai' I told him the idea
and he said done again within just half
an hour. My big excitement is to have
cast Ajay again.” Bhushan Kumar
speaking on how he decided to produce
the drama film: “During the success
party of Milan's film ‘Once Upon a Time
in Mumbaai’, I told Milan that I
wanted to work with him. As soon as
Ajay came on board, we all decided to
join hands and make this film.” Bhushan
Kumar, who is thrilled to start his
project with Milan Luthria, adds: “I am
excited to get Ajay Devgn and Milan
Luthria combination back on silver
screen. The duo has given hits and
‘Baadshaho’ will be another addition to
their kitty.” “Baadshaho”, based on the
name of Ajay's character in the film,
will start shooting second half of 2015
and will release on the Independence
weekend of 2016.
Release of„Jagga
Jasoos“ postponed
While all eyes were set on the much
awaited clash of two of Katrina Kaif's
most awaited films this year, “Jagga
Jasoos” and “Phantom” which were
slated to release on the same day,
August 28, 2015, the makers have
decided to avoid this clash. From what
we hear, though “Phantom” gets to
retain its release date, it is the Ranbir
Kapoor starrer “Jagga Jasoos” that
will be pushed further. It is being said
that having two releases on the same
day will prove hectic for Katrina Kaif
who will have to juggle too much
between the promotions. Filmmaker
Anurag Basu too is in no hurry to release
“Jagga Jasoos” since it seems
that final shoot schedule of the film is
still pending, after which the film will
go into post production, hence the
delay. While actress Katrina Kaif mentioned
about the film being postponed,
the spokesperson of the film maintained
that they are yet to narrow
down on a release date for the film.
Produced by Anurag Basu and Ranbir
Kapoor in association with UTV,
“Jagga Jasoos” also stars Govinda in a
prominent role.
Diana Penty and Abhay
Deol in „Happy Bhaag
Jayegi“
While Diana Penty debuted in Bollywood
by playing the lead actress in
“Cocktail”, it was Deepika Padukone,
8 BNA INDIA January / February 2015

NEWS & GOSSIP
who got all the fame for the film. Now,
after staying away from the silver
screen for about two years, Diana Penty
has finally decided to give her Bollywood
career another trial and has
been signed by filmmaker Anand L.
Rai for his next production. Titled
“Happy Bhaag Jayegi”, Diana will be
sharing screen space with actor Abhay
Deol. The film, which seems to be a
comedy, will be directed by Mudassar
Aziz. It took a while for Anand L. Rai
Diana Penty
and Mudassar Aziz to convince Diana
Penty about doing the film. Though
Diana has been active on the modeling
and endorsement circuit, the actress
completely stayed away from
doing Bollywood films for over two
years. The rest of the details of the film
are still being kept under wraps, however
“Happy Bhaag Jayegi” is slated to
go on floor in mid 2015.
John Abraham injures
his back while shooting
„Welcome Back“
John Abraham, who was shooting for
the climax sequence of Anees
Bazmee's “Welcome Back”, hurt his
back while driving in a desert in Dubai.
Apparently, John Abraham was supposed
to drive an SUV in the desert for
a car chase sequence with other vehicles
coming towards him. Unfortunately
at one point John Abraham broke
his vehicle so hard that his back bore
the brunt of an intense jerk spraining
it. Due to this he was in excruciating
pain, so much so that the actor could
barely sit up. While a doctor was rushed
to the spot, John Abraham had to
undergo a couple of physiotherapy
sessions combined with pain killers
before completing the sequence.
Though currently the actor is in much
better shape, he has been advised to
rest and to avoid picking up any heavy
objects. “Welcome Back” also stars
Shruti Haasan, Nana Patekar, Anil
Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple
Kapadia in prominent roles and is
produced by Firoz Nadiadwala. The
film is slated to release on May 29,
2015.
Irrfan Khan underwent
surgery, Jazbaa shoot
postponed
Sanjay Gupta's ambitious project
“Jazbaa”, which is also the comeback
of former beauty queen Aishwarya
Irrfan Khan
Rai Bachchan, has hit a roadblock.
The reason is Irrfan Khan's ill health.
The actor is on his way to recovery,
owing to a minor surgery. Irrfan Khan
has been complaining of chronic
backache and had to undergo a minor
surgery for the same. Moreover, along
with the treatment, the doctor has
even advised Irrfan Khan to take complete
bed rest for a few days. Because
of this, a script reading session of Jazbaa
that was to be held on January 9
was postponed to January 13, so that
Irrfan could be a part of it. According to
filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, as far as the
shooting of the film is concerned, it will
commence only once Irrfan Khan is
back in action. Right now Irrfan's
health is the top priority. The filmmaker
is yet to decide a date to start the film.
Along with Irrfan Khan, the lead cast of
“Jazbaa” includes Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,
Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher,
Siddhant Kapoor and Chandan Roy
Sanyal.
Prakash Jha to play the
villain in “Gangaajal 2”
The last time filmmaker Prakash Jha
was seen on screen was in a cameo
in “Raajneeti” with Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina
Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Nana Patekar,
Manoj Bajpayee, Naseeruddin Shah
and Ajay Devgn in the leads, which he
had also directed. The latest update
on him is that he will now be seen in a
full-fledged role in his next film
“Gangaajal 2”, a sequel of “Gangaajal”
from 2003. “Gangaajal2” is being presented
by Ajay Devgn. Prakash Jha
will be playing a manipulative cop in
the film.
* Hello, I watched my first Bollywood movie
“Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” in 2004. Right after
that I started to learn Kathak. In 2015 I will travel
to India for the first time - finally! My favourite
Bollywood films are “Devdas”, “Umrao Jaan”,
“Fanaa”, “Maqbool” and “Ram Leela”. I like
Aamir Khan, Kajol, Deepika Padukone, Shahrukh
Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and especially
Irrfan Khan.
Julia S. (21) from Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt
* I saw my first Bollywood film in 1964 or 1965
in Macedonia, where I was born and grew up.
Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the
film or the actors, but I remember that I cried a lot
while watching that film. It was a film for my
heart and even today I still remember some of the
scenes of that film. Later I moved to Germany
and my first film here was “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie
Gham”. After that film I watched many other
Bollywood films. I like films, which tell a good
story. I like Bollywood movies because of their
colours, music, dances and the Indian culture. I
like so many films like “My Name Is Khan”,
“Happy New Year”,” Lagaan”, “KuchKuch Hota
Hai”, “Black”, “Taare Zameen Par”, “Hum Dil
De Chuke Sanam”, “Asoka”, ”Devdas”, “Dilwale
Dulhania Le Jayenge”, “Laagan”, “Chunari Mein
Daag”, “Kabhi Kabhie”, “Sholay”, “Baghban”,
“Darr”, “Dil To Pagal Hai”, “Ra One”, “Yeh Jawaani
Hai Deewani”, “Ram-Leela”,” Mardaani”,
“Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”, “Band Baaja Baaraat”,
“Koi Mil Gaya”, “Kaho Naa … Pyaar Hai” and
“Jodhaa Akbar”. My favourite actors are Shah
Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Kajol, Boman Irani,
Anushka Sharma, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan,
Abhishek Bachchan, Hritik Roshan, Rani
Mukerji, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur,
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. It's my
dream to be once in Mumbai in a film studio to
attend a Bollywood film shooting.
* I'm a Bollywood fan since the 18th March 2005.
I knew about Bollywood movies, but “Kal Ho
Naa Ho” was the first film I have watched, when
the TV channel RTL2 screened it on 18th March
2005. I liked right from the first moment the
colourful scenes and all the emotions in the film;
it was like a roller coaster drive of emotions. Also
I was fascinated by the Indian culture. I like the
music and also of course the dances. Maybe in my
childhood I watched too many Musical films and
Heimat films and too often Kabir Bedi ;-) I like
Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Boman Irani,
Aamir Khan, Anupam Kher, Atul Kulkarni and
Kamal Haasan. My favourite movies are “Kal Ho
Naa Ho”, “Rang De Basanti”, “Asoka”, “Don”,
“Main Hoon Na”, “Lagaan”, “Swades”, “Munna
Bhai”, “Omkara”, “Om Shanti Om”, “Paheli” and
“Veer Zaara”.
Elke B. (51), Bremen
* I'm a Bollywood fan since 2006. I love Bollywood
because I'm fascinated by the songs, the
costumes and dresses in the movies and also by
the Hindi language. My all time favourite Bollywood
films are “Veer Zaara” and “Om Shanti
Om”. I'm not a fan of any special actor but I guess
Deepika, Kareena, SRK and Saif Ali Khan are the
best actors.
OVE BOLLYWOOD
ywood - We did ask them and here are their answers
* I'm a Bollywood fan since I was 4 years old and
I remember that even my mother already liked
Bollywood in those days. We had only one Bollywood
film on DVD - it was “Kal Ho Naa Ho” and
I always liked the trio Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan
and Shah Rukh Khan, especially in the song “It's
The Time To Disco”. I love Bollywood. My
favourite films are “Om Shanti Om” and” Veer
Zaara”.
Vanessa H. (13), North Rhine-Westphalia
* I watched my first Bollywood movie four years
ago. It was “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”, which
is repeatedly screened on TV. Normally I always
zapped away from this film, because I don't like
Shah Rukh Khan that much, but this time for
some reasons I stayed and watched it. The reason
was Hrithik Roshan. Since then I'm a huge
Hrithik fan and I guess he's a world class actor
and could easily beat any Hollywood star. My
favourite film is “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”.
All actors of this film are great. I also love “Kabhi
Khushi Kabhie Gham”, “Guzaarish” and “Om
Shanti Om”. There are so many great Bollywood
films and I can't decide. I'm fascinated by the
romance, drama, comedy, action, music and nice
dances in the films. But I wished that the filmmakers
would think about new own stories instead
of making remakes of Hollywood movies.
Marina O. (45), Schleswig-Holstein
* Since I was 3 years old I'm a Bollywood fan.
I'm from Romania and I remember that there
were always Bollywood films on TV, always
with Romanian subtitles. And since my parents
loved to watch Bollywood films, I obviously also
watched them. In those days there was no colour
TV, so I can't say that I was fascinated by the
colours but by the songs and dances. I started to
imitate the typically Indian mimic and gesture.
When I was 11 years old my family moved to
Germany. We couldn't watch Indian movies anymore
but only Hollywood movies. But then, 10
years ago, my parents made holidays in Dubai
and brought a Bollywood film song DVD for me.
Also films songs with Shah Rukh Khan. A little
bit later I could watch for the first time a Bollywood
film on German TV. It was “Kabhi Khushi
Kabhie Gham”. And in one advertisement in the
commercial break they announced the Temptation
Tour in Dortmund. I knew I need a ticket for
this show, just to see once SRK live on stage
dancing. I loved the show and was overwhelmed.
I started to search on the internet for more info
about that guy whos name I could not speak:
Shah Rukh Khan. I became member of different
Bollywood fan forums and got to know many
other new fans and friends. I attended the film
shooting of Himesh Reshammiya in Cologne,
went to many Bollywood dance parties and even
travelled to London to get Saris and Salwar
Kameezes in South Hall. You see, I'm really a
huge Bollywood fan and live it. Even the ringtone
on my mobile is a Bollywood song. One of
my favourite movies is “Devdas”. But my biggest
dream is to meet Shah Rukh Khan personally
and to dance with him together on stage. Only
once...that would be great.
FILM REVIEW - SPECIAL
FILM CRITIC
BOBBY SING
“Being in the profession
of music and media
from almost two decades,
I feel thankful to
be associated with this
tough but ecstatic world
of creative expressions
with HIS BLESSINGS.
Movies remained the
first love always since
childhood and the passion
for writing got over
me since the early nineties
beginning with poetry
and songs which later helped me a lot
in my musical associations.”
With the real name of Harpreet Singh, his
everlasting relationship with cinema began
from the moment he was given the
nickname Bobby, inspired from Raj
Kapoor's cult film with the same title
released in the early 70s. Writing about
movies began post 2000 through the medium
of DVD and World Wide Web. The
exposure to the works of masters all over
the globe opened new creative doors for
him when he got to see many gems which
were actually the original films from
where many Indian masterpieces were
inspired or even copied.
And that’s when he started writing about
all those “Inspired films” and “Must
Watch Movies” in the year 2006. The
favourable responses to those short early
write-ups made way for
his own personal website
http://www.bobbytalksci
nema.com which further
resulted in writing reviews
of all new Bollywood
films as a critic at
few movies sites and for
some selected publications.
Also Bobby recently published
his first book on
Indian Cinema with the
title “Did You Know: For All Bollywood
Obsessed Movie Buffs”, in which he discovers
many hidden and interesting facts
about Hindi Cinema. Facts that are not
just two-line trivia but studied in depth
along with a few other finer details about
the subject. The book is for all those readers
who eat, drink, sleep, think Hindi Cinema
all the time like an obsession.
FILM REVIEW
HAPPY ENDING
Disappointing and a waste of Govinda
Friends who have seen Raj Nidimoru and Krishna
D.K.’s (aka Raj & D.K.) earlier ventures
such as “99”, “Shor In The City” or the recent
“Go Goa Gone”, would readily agree that the
director duo really showcased some exceptional
talent in these three films, moving ahead than
a routine Bollywood project made on the same
old set routine patterns. Hence, watching the
witty promos of
“Happy Ending”, well
supported by a few peppy
dance numbers and
an interesting cast really
made everyone expect
a fairly enjoyable
rom-com from the
team once again.
But perhaps crime
thrillers remain their
proved forte and a romantic
comedy is not
exactly the genre Raj &
D.K. are comfortable
with. Because what
they present in “Happy
Ending” is full of all
been there-seen before sequences with nothing
fresh except few occasional good dialogues or
only four entertaining scenes of Govinda.
Taking its clear references for certain insertions
(like the book reading one) from “Before Sunset”
(2004) and more, “Happy Ending” begins
on a fairly interesting note and then goes on to
become a boringly long ride with everything
predictable till the end. The romance loses all
its charm as it progresses and the writers remain
confused between their target audience
making a vain attempt to cater the viewers
within the country as well as abroad. In fact this
has been the dilemma or conflict seen in most
of the projects today when they try to incorporate
plots for both the diverse territories and in
the effort make a complete mess out of the film
deliberately. With no impressive performances
delivered by the lead pair, “Happy Ending”
once again wastes the gifted Govinda just like
“Kill Dil”. The veteran has only four to five
scenes in the entire film, but still manages to
give you at least something to cheer in those
few minutes, especially in the song “Nacho
Saare G Phaadke” offering his famous and
immensely enjoyable
dance moves. Saif Ali
Khan continues his ‘noshow’
post “Bullet Raja”
& “Humshakals”, plus
Ileana D'Cruz gives another
similar yet sweet
kind of appearance as
the fellow writer. Ranveer
Shorey tries hard to
contribute his bit &
does bring some rare
smiles with his witty dialogues
but Kalki
Koechlin, Preity Zinta
and Kareena Kapoor
fail to add anything significant
to this long,
painful watch in their small cameos.
Music remains the only saving grace in the film
(with few catchy dance tracks), which unfortunately
doesn’t get the support it deserved from
the script. On the other hand Cinematography
as well as Background score do not come up
with any extra ordinary feature to mention here.
In short, it’s really strange why the director duo
chose this kind of stale and overdone subject
for their next venture - or was this another case
of the producer interfering into the script as per
his own vision as always. In any case, “Happy
Ending” is not at all a “happy” watch to recommend
with nothing else to offer except Govinda.
So you can easily give it a skip to be later
watched at any Cable Channel or on Home
Video when its official DVD got released.
FILM REVIEW
KILL DIL
It's like to fool the audience yet again
Disappointed hugely with this latest offering
from director Shaad Ali (of “Saathiya” &
“Bunty Aur Babli” fame), made with such a
lame attitude and casual writing, it gives me
no energy to review it in details. So here is a
brief account of what they showed us in their
promos and what the film
had in its two hours of
duration offering simply
nothing of that sort, ridiculing
the audience yet
again.
Keeping a title inspired
from Quentin Tarantino’s
cult classic “Kill Bill”, if
you think they tried to follow
anything related to
that film in execution, storytelling
or else, then forget
about it completely
since the film is not even
interested in that.
Looking at the exciting promos, if you are
expecting a great time with the trio and a
lovely lady enacting on a fresh script from the
team, then you are gravely mistaken as YRF
Studios have just rehashed their mediocre
“Gunday”, converting it into a lousy love story
presenting it as a new release, considering the
audience as a bunch of dumb minds sitting in
the theaters once again.
Considering its unusual cast ensemble if one
thinks Govinda is there to make a strong
comeback then he or she is going to be hugely
disheartened as despite making an honest effort,
the veteran remains wasted due to the
film’s inane writing giving him a confused
character, who enters the screen without any
great build up and then suddenly starts singing
& dancing like a professional performer ruining
his own persona of a Don. Moreover, after
a fine initial 30 minutes with Ranveer, he
becomes stereotyped and takes away the major
portion of the film ignoring the others. Ali Zafar
tries hard but seems to be misfit in the venture
right from the word go. And Parineeti has nothing
new to do in the film, so fails to impress
with a completely seen before portrayal on the
screen making no impact
whatsoever.
The film begins with a flashback
exactly like “Gunday”,
makes some impression in its
first few sequences and then
becomes so tedious to watch
that I would like to rate it as
one of those poor films that
make your two hours in theater
like a whole day spent
there in the dark taking several
small naps. Delhi is taken
as the backdrop just blindly
following the current trend
and the dialogues even tend
to become vulgar as the film progresses. The
likable music loses all its charm due to its bad
timings and average compositions. Plus the
technical department fails to rise above the
routine despite the background score drawing
your attention in its opening.
In short, I found only two things worth mentioning
in “Kill Dil”:
One the lyrics by maestro Gulzar and his mesmerizing
voice-over used in few timely sequences.
Second thing is the innovative way of
beginning the song ‘Sweeta’, with a radio commentary
by Ranveer giving all the credits.
But apart from these two insertions, “Kill Dil”
simply deserves to be ignored and Shaad Ali
really misses the train making such a terrible
film, wasting a huge opportunity in hands. How
could you do it Shaad, especially with Govinda
And…what are you doing Aditya with the
Yash Raj Banner churning out such trashes
INTERVIEW
26 BNA INDIA January / February 2015

INTERVIEW
PREM
CHOPRA
THE LIVING LEGEND
For more than 50 years he works in the
film industry and made more than 350 films. He won
all important, relevant and famous awards. Recently
he even published his own biography. He is a living
legend of the Indian cinema and became
successful and famous as the villain of Bollywood.
His sentence “Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra”
in the film “Bobby” with Raj Kapoor in the lead,
made him a household name.
He started his career as a circulator of
Times Of India. While doing that job he
started filmmaking and had his first role in
the Punjabi movie “Chaudhary Karnail
Singh”in 1961 which was released in
1964 and became a huge success. Prem
Chopra won his first National Award for
this film and went on with filmmaking, but
the huge success came only some years
later. Only after the successful release of
“Upkaar” in 1967 which became a box
office hit, he left his job at Times Of India
and concentrated fully on filmmaking. And
that's how his unique career in Bollywood
started... In our Interview with Prem Chopra
we look back to these early years and
his achievements and spoke with him
about his plans for the future and his
dreams.
INTERVIEW
You never minded to play the villain and this
turned out to be the kick of success in your
career. But what might be the reason for so
many actors to avoid to play the bad, the
villain
Prem Chopra: I did not mind playing villain I
wanted to be an actor irrespective of the role. I
can speak only for myself and not for other
actors.
When you entered the film industry you
were a young and very good looking guy.
You had all a film hero needed. Did you ever
regret that you decided against the fame
and (female) fan following of such a hero
over the fame as the evil man
Prem Chopra: No, I did not.
For nearly 30 years you have been seen
only in negative roles. Only from 1995 onwards
you started to play also positive characters
or character roles. What made you
make this change - any special reasons
Prem Chopra: I had passed the age for negative
young roles and in the meantime I was
offered positive character roles. They went
very well with movie goers. That’s why I didn’t
mind doing it.
One could think, that you achieved everything
you ever dreamt of. But still: are there
some roles and characters which you
would like to perform or some unfulfilled
dreams
Prem Chopra: A creative person is never satisfied.
I would like to do more challenging roles if
they come my way.
You became very choosy these days regarding
film offers. What makes you deciding
for or against a film offer now
Prem Chopra: The roles that were offered to
me were not substantial so I did not accept
those offers but those that were good I accepted.
Which of your films come close to the real
Prem Chopra and the roles in which films
make you even today very proud
Prem Chopra: This is a question that cannot
be answered by the actor himself but the audience.
They can only list it for you.
You saw many big stars come and go, you
worked with legends and became by yourself
a living legend. Whom did you admire
the most - with whom you shared special
memories (and which memories)
Prem Chopra: With Dilip Kumar, but there
are too many memories which are impossible
to share with you right now.
Lately we could see you in the drama
“Honour Killing” which was screened and
awarded at various big international film
festivals. Now we can see you finally in
new films. What can you tell us about
those upcoming films and your roles
there
Prem Chopra: I have 3-4 films where I have
played different characters. These films have
shades of comedy, emotional and positive in
them. One film is “Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan”, a
drama with Om Puri, Rati Agnihotri and me in
the lead roles which will be released in February
2015.
Which are you next projects
Prem Chopra: Negotiations are on for the
next projects but I can't talk about them yet.
You are a witness of the change of Indian
Cinema during the past five decades.
Which are the main changes in your opinion
and in which direction you see the
development of the Indian Cinema, how
would it be in 10 years
Prem Chopra: Everything changes with time.
Now vast amount of improvement with respect
to technique, visual and special effects
have been done. This enhances the narration
of the story to a great extent. There will be
more changes in ten years and am sure it will
for the betterment of cinema.
What would you suggest to a total newcomer
on how he would be able to enter
the industry and on how to survive there
successfully as long as possible
Prem Chopra: Determination to be there and
attribute it for honest and hard work if he or
she gets the opportunity to do it.
FILM REVIEW
RANG RASIYA
A Film you have to watch
before you die
Hindi Cinema has never been keen on making
enlightening biographies, especially of any talented
creative artists born in our part of the
world in the last century. Thankfully, “Rang
Rasiya” is one of those rare and important
biographical dramas based on the life of 19th
century painter Raja Ravi
Varma, who was the pioneer
artist, painting the divine
Indian Gods and
Godnesses on his canvas
with an exceptional grace
and beauty. Directed by
Ketan Mehta the period drama
stars Randeep Hooda
and Nandana Sen in the
lead but unfortunately remained
in the cans for six
long years since its completion
in 2008.
Now where a few blame the
internal disputes of the makers
as the cause of this long delay in its release,
others mention its extremely bold scenes as the
key reason for getting stuck in the censors, in
order to avoid any communal unrest among the
people. Anyway, whatever the reason might be,
the sad irony remains that despite being a rare,
courageous film made on one of the most famous
Indian painters (who earned a world acclaim
too), the project could found no takers till
recently, when Randeep Hooda became a part
of some highly successful films at the box
office making a name of his own.
Based on the biographical novel by Ranjit Desai
the film passionately talks about Varma’s
obsessive art and the struggle to practice his
free artistic expressions depicting the mythological
characters creatively. And many would be
stunned to know that though his exquisite
paintings were getting famous all over the
world in that particular era, the artist was
arrested in his own country on the charge of
obscenity and offending religious & cultural
sentiments of the public by painting in an
indecent manner.
Frankly, “Rang Rasiya”
was an eye opener for me
too as I was also not
aware of such astonishing
facts about one of the
greatest Indian painters of
my own country. And that
is exactly why bio-pics
need to be made like an
effective means of spreading
awareness in the
present generation to be
precise.
Yes, technically it can easily
be called an artistically
inclined film made with a sincere motive accompanied
by a decent cinematography, average
soundtrack (which could be much better)
and impressive performances by the entire cast
led by Randeep Hooda and the gorgeous Nandana
Sen.
However it’s not the technical qualities for
which the film is being included here in the list
of must watch movies, but it’s the informative
value of its shocking as well as educative
content which essentially needs to be told to
our younger generation and not to be slipped
under the carpet as some forgettable part of
our history. So ignoring all the controversies
and unnecessary delay over its release, I would
like to recommend watching “Rang Rasiya”as
a must.
FILM REVIEW
UNGLI
A socially relevant subject
uninterestingly executed
The first reaction one has in mind after watching
“Ungli” is that the film must have been in
the making for a long time with certain production
issues, as it talks about an already overused
theme quite shabbily and has a very
uninterestingly executed progression without
any great involvement of its writer and director.
Moreover it has
all cameo kind of appearances
of many
known names who
have nothing great to
do in their limited
scenes and thus make
no impact whatsoever
on the viewers in less
than two hours of duration
including few mediocre
songs.
Stating its only merits,
“Ungli” begins well
with a hard hitting realistic
scene and then
has an innovative animated
title sequence
featuring a song calling
for social awakening through 'A Respected
Aadarniye Ungli'. It comes to the point in
the first 10 minutes only and therefore raises
your expectations with such quick developments
on the screen wasting no time on introductions.
However a poor item song with a
guest appearance of Shraddha Kapoor pulls
the film down and then it fails to pick up any
further in the subsequent reels offering a pretty
stale, outdated and illogical project taking a
lot for granted. A love angle (with Neha Dhupia)
is inserted in its storyline just for the sake
of it as usual and nothing works in the favour of
this weak attempt made despite all the good
intentions of its socially relevant subject suggesting
a revolutionary solution taking the law
in hands to fight with corruption.
With an interval at just 55 minutes and a laughable
sequence in its climax along with few unwanted
songs, “Ungli”
gives you nothing as
compared to the expectations
raised in the beginning
and one keeps
wondering why actors
such as Emraan Hashmi,
Randeep Hooda,
Kangna Ranaut, Mahesh
Manjrekar and
Sanjay Dutt said yes to
the film to play all under-developed
characters
in only few scenes
appearances full of
many clichéd moments.
The background score
& editing tries its best
to give the movie some
pace. But nothing is successful in hiding the
truth that the film had been in the making for
the last two years and most probably had gone
through many changes and re-touchings too,
resulting in a complete ‘no-show’ in the end to
say it all.
So try to avoid “Ungli” this week since its
nothing but another of those mistakes of a big
production house made out of their sheer overconfidence
using an in-house team/director trying
to take advantage of the present questionable
social conditions prevalent in the country.
FILM REVIEW
PK
Sensitive topic in an entertaining format
Revealing the gist in the first line itself (with
a purpose), yes “PK” is a slickly written,
engaging film once again talking about that
Supreme Power post “Oh My God” (2012),
focusing more on providing entertainment
and less on the emotional depth required by
the important subject honestly. No, the film is
not in the same league of Rajkumar Hirani’s
earlier three brilliant films to be straight. But
it talks about the right things at
the right time in a rare comical
tone making the much needed
impression.
Coming to its basic plot in the
first scene itself, as speculated
rightly, “PK” is about an alien
visiting the planet earth with a
purpose of knowing more
about the people living here
having similar bodies as their
own. Aamir Khan plays the
alien here to perfection having all human-like
features and Anushka plays the girl working
for a news channel, helping Aamir in the city
of Delhi and using him too for her own hidden
purpose of making a hit story. The entertainment
actually begins when they both meet at
a metro station and then later brings in many
other interesting characters like a disappointed
father, a misunderstood lover boy, a fraud
God-man, an annoyed channel owner and
many more to give you an engaging 150 minutes
talking about something important.
The first half of the film is full of many enjoyable
sequences. However the same cannot be
said about its second half as here we go the
same clichéd way with nothing novel as per
the concept is concerned, having a completely
predictable love angle thrown in (with the
alien) thankfully not given too much footage
in the narration. The last hour keeps reminding
you of “Oh My God” with many similar
34 BNA INDIA January / February 2015
settings and then the end offering few wellwritten
twists and turns (involving the letter)
brings smiles on your faces and tears in the eyes
too as always expected from a Rajkumar Hirani
climax unconditionally.
In the performances section, no doubt, Aamir
plays his part extremely well making the best
use of his odd ears. He simply excels as the
alien and doesn’t let you think about the flaws
throughout the film leading
from the front. Carrying the
film all alone Aamir gets some
fine support from Anushka
Sharma, who once again proves
her effortless mastery in playing
such lively characters. Sushant
Singh Rajput impresses in
his few scenes, whereas Saurabh
Shukla, Sanjay Dutt and
Boman Irani are not given any
great roles to play quite surprisingly.
Particularly it was really disappointing to
see Boman Irani doing such an unimportant role
after playing the lifeline of all three Hirani films
till date, enacting three unique characters considered
as benchmarks in the field of acting.
Music remains another weaker section of “PK”
as I couldn’t remember even one song while
walking out of the theater. And that certainly
wasn’t the case in any of Hirani’s earlier films.
Yes both the lyricists and the singers have done
their job very well but it was the melody I
couldn’t find in most of the songs in the soundtrack.
Overall, despite having that emotional end with
another surprising cameo of a big star and all
fixed ingredients of a Hirani film, “PK” is not
able to give you that huge creative satisfaction,
experienced in Hirani’s earlier three films creating
a big chemical locha in your hearts while
walking out of the theatres.

COVER STORY
THE EXOTIC BEAUTY
She is 29 years old and reached the peak of her
career. Jacqueline Fernandez is in great demand
like never before. The beauty comes from Sri Lanka,
studied mass communications and worked as a
journalist before she entered the model and film
business. In 2006 she won the Miss Universe
pageants for her country Sri Lanka as 'Miss Sri
Lanka’ and got a lot of model jobs. One of her jobs
brought her to India, where director Sujoy Ghosh
got aware of her and signed her for his film
“Aladin”. This film was the debut for Jacqueline
Fernandez as an actress. Since then she has been
climbing one step after the other on the ladder of
her career. Some month back we could see her side
by side with Salman Khan in “Kick”. Next month
her new film “Roy” with Arjun Rampal and Ranbir
Kapoor will be released.
COVER STORY
Jacqueline Fernandez was born on 11
August 1985 in Sri Lanka as the youngest
of four children. Very soon her
family moved to Bahrain, where she
finished her high school education.
After that she went to Australia to
study there in a University and graduated
in Mass Communication. She
worked as a journalist before she
moved back to Sri Lanka,
where she joined a
TV station. In 2006 she
was crowned as ‘Miss
Sri Lanka Universe
2006’ and represented
her state at Miss Universe
2006 pageant.
Many model jobs had
been offered to her, so
that in 2007 one could
see her in her first TV advertisement.
One of her jobs brought her to India,
where director Sujoy Ghosh got aware
of her. He was fascinated by her and
wanted her as a lead actress for his
film “Aladin”.
Jacqueline Fernandez signed for
“Aladin” and gave her debut as an actress
with her character as Jasmine
alongside Riteish Deshmukh in 2009.
Her performance received mixed reviews.
Film critics doubted her acting
talent, but complimented her on her
look and praised her beauty. Surely
that were not the dream debut and the
wished critics for Jacqueline Fernandez,
but still she was nominated as the
Critics had
doubts about her
acting skills
while praising
her beauty the
same time.
best newcomer of the year and won the
IIFA Award and Stardust Award. In
2010, she was seen once again appearing
alongside Riteish Deshmukh in the
romantic comedy “Jaane Kahan Se
Aayi Hai”. Once again she received
mainly negative reviews for her performance.
It seemed to be a tough task
for her to conquer Bollywood and not
to end as a flop. It was
Mahesh Bhatt who has
seen the talent in her and
offered her in 2010 the
female lead in “Murder
2”, which was released
in 2011. In this thriller
she was seen alongside
Emraan Hashmi and got
a lot of attention for the
boldness and sex appeal
she displayed as the character Priya in
the movie, while her performance
again received only decent reviews.
“Murder 2” emerged as a major economic
success and Jacqueline Fernandez
she started getting offers from big
production houses. But she turned
down many roles to avoid being type
cast as a sex symbol.
In 2012 she appeared in “Housefull 2”
as one of the leads alongside Akshay
Kumar, Asin and Rishi Kapoor. For
Jacqueline Fernandez it was important
to be part of big films and a great cast.
The film became one of the top grossing
productions of India that year and
Jacqueline Fernandez finally received
some positive reviews for her performance
even though mainly her look was
praised again. Her first release of 2013
was “Race 2”. Her performance in the
film got generally positive reviews
and the critics and audience got aware
of her talent for action. Despite such a
great cast with Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali
Khan, John Abraham,
Deepika Padukone
and Ameesha Patel,
Jacqueline Fernandez
was able to convince
with her role as Omisha
and to catch attention.
“Race 2” marks
the positive turn in her
career.
No wonder that her
next film was an action
thriller too: In
2014 she was seen as the female lead
alongside Salman Khan, Randeep
Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in
“Kick”. Even though the film got only
mixed reviews and critics, it was a
blockbuster at the box office. Jacqueline
Fernandez could convince with
her role - she played the Polish psychiatric
doctor Shaina Mehra. She became
attention as a serious actress. In
2013, in an interview with an Indian
newspaper, she stated that it was her
biggest dream to play once alongside
Salman Khan. Now, with “Kick”, her
dream came true and kicked her to the
top of Bollywood. Today Jacqueline
Fernandez is a demanded actress. We
are excited about her next film “Roy”,
which will be released next month in
India. In this comedy thriller we will
see her in a double role, as she plays
two totally different characters
(please read our film preview for
“Roy”). Arjun Rampal and Ranbir Kapoor
will play the
In 2014 her
dream, to play
once alongside
Salman Khan,
came true
with the
box office hit
„Kick“
male leads in “Roy”.
We are very sure that
Jacqueline Fernandez
will find her place in
Bollywood and can
reach the top easily.
Her career shows that
she became better
from film to film, became
more and more
serious and could
avoid the label as a
‘sex bomb’. She is not
only well-educated and looks gorgeous
but she is also a very talented
and versatile actress. She is currently
filming for Karan Malhotra's
“Brothers”, a remake of the 2011
sports drama “Warrior” with Akshay
Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra.
In addition to her acting and modelling,
Jacqueline Fernandez also joined
hands with PETA and supports a lot
of charitable organizations. In 2014
she was even named as “The Woman
of The Year” by PETA India. We
wish Jacqueline Fernandez further on
lots of success and many more good
films!
LEARN GERMAN - LESSON 1
German vowels can be pronounced as long or as short
ones. Often, it changes the meaning of the word entirely.
Long vowels are often in combination with a “h”,
short ons are often followed by double characters:
gehen (chalna), fahren (chalana), sehen (dekhna)
rennen (daurna), kommen (aana)
GRAMMAR
Articles:
In German there are three different articles which
mark the genus (masculine, feminine, neutral) of the
noun:
der Bruder (m) - the brother - bhai
die Tochter (f) - the daughter - beti
das Kind (n) - the child - baccha
die Leute (plural) - the people - log
There is no special marker like a special ending for the
correct article of the noun in singular. Therefore in
German you have to learn the correct article directly
in combination with the noun. The article for plural
forms is always “die”.
In many cases you can form the female form of a noun
by adding a -in at the end:
der Student (m) - the student - chatre
die Studentin (f) - the student - chatra
Notice: In German every noun is written with an
upper-case character in the beginning.
Personal pronouns:
ich bin - I am - main hoon
du bist - you are - tum ho / tu hai (familiar)
er ist - he is - yah hai
sie ist - she is - yah hai
es ist - it is - yah/vah hai
wir sind - we are - hum hain
ihr seid - you are - aap hain
sie sind - they are - yeh/veh hain
Sie sind - you are - aap hain (formal)
10 YEARS BNA
SPECIAL FEATURE
Even though BNA GERMANY® by now is
well known, still some people ask me from
time to time, for what BNA stands for. For
all those who might have the same question
here is the answer: BNA stand for
Bollywood News Agency, as that is how we
started in 2005, when the idea was born to
offer a full service agency for News and
Promotion in the domain of Indian Cinema
& Culture Entertainment in German language
as nothing like that existed in Europe
and we became the first ones.
In those days the German TV channels “arte”
and later also “RTL2” started to screen the first
Bollywood movies, which were watched by
many people in Germany and got immediately
a huge fan following. Between 2004 and 2005
a real Bollywood boom started in Germany and
the Bollywood fan community grew and grew
every day. But there was a lack of available
news and information about Hindi films, their
filmmakers and their actors and actresses. Not
all people in Germany speak and understand
English and could get their information through
the internet.
That's why my idea was born to offer them all
those news by making my researches on the
internet and by writing articles about Indian
Cinema and Culture in German
language, which I published on
my own website called
http://www.bna-germany.com.
And that was the beginning of a
wonderful journey:
Initially I worked alone, but very
soon people came to me, offered
me their help and also wanted to
write articles about India, Bollywood,
the Bollywood stars and
about Bollywood events which
happened all over Europe. Very
soon I got a staff of fixed freelance
editors and photographers.
I myself also went to all major
events around Europe to get contacts
and to meet singers, directors,
promoters, actors, film
distributors etc. and my business
network grew fast. Very soon I
was also connected with all important
Indian film producers and filmmakers,
media, publishers, PR
agencies and artist managers.
Through this huge business network
BNA GERMANY was in the
56 BNA INDIA January / February 2015

SPECIAL FEATURE
position to get first-hand information,
exclusive interviews and upto-date
news directly from the film
industry in India, which helped us
a lot to get the needed awareness
in Germany. People realized our
good work and started talking
about us so that soon many people
got aware of BNA GERMANY,
the website and our work. Our
exclusive reports about events in
Europe even got published in Indian
media like IANS, Bollywood
Hungama, Hindustan Times or
Mumbai Mirror.
After one year BNA GERMANY
offered a wider spectrum of services
- not only restricted to news
and promotion but we also offered
our services in PR & Marketing
of Films, Event Marketing, Film
and TV Production Consulting
& Distribution, Consulting for
Concerts & Shows and Artist
Management & Promotion as
that was what our clients asked
for. This way BNA GERMANY
became an exclusive full service
agency in the field of Indian Cinema & Culture.
We became Film Production Consultant for
films like “Humraah - The Traitor” (2006),
“Aap Kaa Surroor” (2007), “Karma - Crime
Passion Reincartation” (2008), for the German
documentary ”Kumbh Mela” (2010) and
the German TV Show “Lebe Deinen Traum”
(2009) as well as for the live broadcast of the
Sonu Nigam Concert in Offenbach (2008).
BNA GERMANY also did the exclusive German
media coverage and promotion of Film
Festivals like the London Indian Film Festival,
the Berlinale Film Festival, the Cannes Film
Festival, the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart, the
IFFI Goa International Indian Film Festival and
the Munich Film Festival and did the exclusive
media coverage of such events like IIFA
Awards 2007 in Yorkshire, film premieres like
“Veer Zaara” (2006, Paris), “Khabhi Alvida
Naa Kehna” (2007, Hamburg), “Om Shanti
Om” (2008, Berlin) and “My Name Is Khan”
(2010, Berlin), concerts of Sonu Nigam in
Germany, London, Den Haag and Paris, concerts
of Himesh Reshammiya and Gurdas
Maan in Mumbai and London, concerts of
Sukhwinder Singh in Goa and of Udit Narayan
in Den Haag.
We were also allowed to attend and report
exclusively about several Film Shootings like
“Aap Kaa Surroor” (2007),”Mujjahir” (2010),
“Don 2” (2010) and “Chennai Express”
(2012).
Within the next few years some more websites
all over Germany and Europe developed,
which also offered news and information about
Bollywood. Some of them even copied our
articles and pictures as for them we have been
the only reliable source, because we got firsthand
news from India and also reported exclusively
and directly from all major events in
Europe and India. For me it was good to know
that people trusted us and followed us, as it
showed me to be on the right track. The Bollywood
boom in Europe was between 2004 and
2010. In those years many Bollywood films
were screened on TV, many of the latest Bollywood
films were even released in our cinemas,
very rarely dubbed but mainly with English
subtitles, many concerts of Bollywood playback
singers took place in Europe, many films
were shot in Europe and many shows happened.
For every Bollywood fan those years
were amazing.
But slowly it did happen that big Bollywood
shows were announced but did not take place.
People lost their ticket money and with that
their trust. The TV channels
stopped screening new Bollywood
films but only repeated films like
“KKKG” or “Kal Ho Naa Hoo” many
times. The only steady institution
have been the Berlinale (Berlin
Film Festival), which had every
year Indian Films and even film
premieres with Red Carped and
with the stars. We felt that something
has to happen to push the
Indian Cinema again in Europe.
BNA GERMANY was still successful
and people asked us to publish
a printed media. That's why we
started publishing the monthly
print magazine “BNA GERMANY”
in 2010 in cooperation with Gurdas
Maan's MGM Sai Production.
Within one year we became the
biggest magazine on Indian Cinema
& Culture in Europe even
though there have been also
some other Bollywood magazines.
Since no bigger shows or events
happened any longer in Germany,
the idea was born to organize
such a big Event by ourselves - an
Indian festival with films, stage
performances and stars. Since
2008 BNA GERMANY was the
partner of the ACEBAs (Annual
Central European Bollywood
Awards), initiated by the Swiss Bollywood
Forum Molodezhnaja. As
the PR and media partner of those
Bollywood Fan Awards we promoted
it internationally and started
with the first ACEBA Award Show
in 2011 in Switzerland. In 2012 we
organized in Berlin our first Indian
Film Festival in which the ACEBA
Award Show became an integral
part of the festival. Due to our
good connection with the Indian
film industry we were able to invite
prominent filmmakers and stars
like Prem Chopra, Madhur
Bhandarkar, Vipin Sharma, Abhishek
Pathak, Omi Vaidya and
many more. Film producers and
distributors helped us by offering
their latest and best films which we
could screen at the festival.
In 2014 BNA GERMANY launched
its own Film Awards, the AIFAs
(Annual Indian Film Awards) as
a further development of the ACEBAs and now
with this edition we are releasing our first edition
of “BNA INDIA”. Our journey, which started
ten years back in 2005, still goes on and we
enjoy the trip. The most important value in our
work is trust. People - be it our readers or be it
our business partners - trust us. And that is our
biggest achievement in our work, because
without that trust over all those years we would
not have such a good relationship with our
partners and could not do such a great job
which makes us to Europe's No. 1 for Entertainment,
as Indian Cinema & Culture are our
passion.
Our supporters throughout the past years have
been Tania Vom Lehn, Diana Weidner, Sylvia
Cholschreiber and Sven Schlegelmilch. For
the magazines we had also a lot of contributors
like Jyothi Venkatesh (editor), Saibal Chatterjee
(editor), Anupama Kathyayni (fashion
designer), Jattinn Kochhar (fashion designer),
Ajay Bhambi (astrologer), Shiraz Henry
(photographer), Uptal Borpujari (editor), Arnab
Banerjee (editor), Gaurav Gupta (editor),
Rupa Batra (astrologer), Nandita Dutta
GERMAN CITIES
Berlin, located in northeastern Germany,
is the capital of Germany and one of the
16 states of Germany. With a population
of 3.5 million people, Berlin is Germany's
largest city. In 1949, the Federal Republic
of Germany was founded in West Germany,
while the German Democratic Republic
was proclaimed in East Germany.
West Berlin was surrounded by East German
territory, and East Germany proclaimed
the Eastern part of Berlin as its
capital. In 1961, East Germany began the
building of the Berlin Wall between East
and West Berlin. In 1989, with the end of
the Cold War and pressure from the East
German population, the Berlin Wall fell
on 9 November and was subsequently
mostly demolished. Today, the "East
Side Gallery" preserves a large portion of
the Wall which can be visited. On 3 October
1990, the two parts of Germany were
reunified as the Federal Republic of Ger-
Still you can see parts of the Berlin Wall in the city.
many, and Berlin again became the official
German capital with the Reichstag
building as its traditional seat of the German
Parliament.
The city has a highly eclectic array of
architecture and buildings due to its history
as Kingdom of Prussia, the 1871 German
Empire, the Weimar Republic, Nazi
Germany, East Germany, and now the
reunified Germany. Buildings and structurs
like the TV Tower (Fernsehturm) at
Alexanderplatz, the Brandenburg Gate,
the Gendarmenmarkt, the Deutscher
Dom and also the Museum Island as well
as the Potsdamer Platz, the Berlin Philharmonie
and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial
Church are proofs of the architectual variety
of the city. But also outside the city
one can find many historical places like
the Sanssouci in Potsdam, the former
summer palace of Frederick the Great,
King of Prussia, or the concentration
camp in Oranienburg. Both places can be
reach by the public transportation.
Berlin's transport infrastructure is highly
complex, providing a diverse range of
urban mobility like S-Bahn, U-Bahn,
Tram, Bus, Ferry and is
well connected due to
its long-distance rail
lines with all of the major
cities of Germany
and with many cities in
neighboring European
countries. Berlin has
two commercial airports:
Berlin Tegel Airport
and Schönefeld
Airport.
The Berlin-Brandenburg
capital region is
one of the most prolific
centers of higher education
and research in
Germany and Europe.
The city has four public
research universities Alexanderplatz with the TV Tower
(Humboldt University, Free University
of Berlin, Technical University and University
of Arts) and 27 private, professional
and technical colleges which offer a
wide range of disciplines. Research and
development have an economic significance
for Berlin. The metropolitan region
ranks among the Top 3 innovative locations
in the EU. Other important economic
sectors in Berlin include life sciences,
transportation, information and communication
technologies, media
and music,
advertising and design,
biotechnology, environmental
services, construction,
e-commerce,
retail, hotel business
and medical engineering
- many national
and international companies
have business or
service centers in Berlin.
The creative arts sector
comprises music, film,
advertising, architecture,
art, design, fashion,
performing arts and
publishing. Berlin is
home to many international
and regional television
and radio stations and has Germany's
largest number of daily newspapers. Also
Berlin is an important location for the
European and German film industry: in
the city are based more than 1000 film
and television production companies and
270 movie theaters. The famous Babelsberg
Studios and the production company
UFA are located in Potsdam (30 kilometers
from Berlin). The city also hosts the
annual Berlin Film Festival 'Berlinale',
which is the largest publicly attended
film festival in the world.
As a multicultural city - more than
500,000 people of the 3.5 millions who
live in Berlin are
foreigners from all
over the world like
from Turkey, Italy,
Serbia, Poland,
Vietnam, China,
the USA, Iran, Lebanon
or Russia;
another 500,000
people are descendants
of international
migrants and
have either become
naturalized
German citizens or obtained citizenship
by virtue of birth in Germany - a lot of
intercultural events take place in Berlin.
The most famous festival is the annual
'Karneval der Kulturen' in May, a huge
street festival which resembles the Carnival
in Rio. If you come to Berlin you also
have to visit some of the 138 museums
and 400 art galleries. A must-visit is the
Pergamon Museum, the Naturkunde Museum
and the art gallery at Hamburger
Bahnhof. The best places for shopping
are Alexanderplatz, Wilmersdorfer Street
and of course Kurfuerstendamm and Tauentzien
Street. The Kurfuerstendamm is
home to some of Berlin's luxurious stores
with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial
Church at its eastern
end. Nearby
on Tauentzienstraße
is the shopping
mall KaDeWe,
claimed to be continental
Europe's
largest department
store. Another great
place to visit is
Potsdamer Platz
Tauentzien Street close to Ku-Damm with view to the with its Sony Center,
the Berlinale
Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church
office, a casino, a
Cinemaxx, an IMAX 3D Cinema and the
shopping mall 'Potsdamer Platz Arkaden'.
You need at least one week to discover
Berlin at least a little bit and to get aware
of the unique spirit of the city and its
people. But actually, even if you live in
Berlin since years, you will never explore
every single part of Berlin.
GERMAN COOKING
CHICKEN FRIKASSEE
Ingredients:
(for 4 persons)
1 chicken, boneless
1 chicken bouillon cube
water
1 small onion
4 tbs. margarine or butter (unsalted)
1 large can button mushrooms
1 jar white asparagus
4 tbs. flour
1/4 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. Spanish capers
Directions:
Boil the chicken in a pot with just enough water to
cover. Add the bouillon cube. Be sure to cover with
a tight fitting lid. Once the chicken is cooked
through, remove it to a plate or bowl and allow to
cool. When cool, chop the chicken meat into bite
size chunks. Pour about 2 cups of the broth in a bowl
or other container (remember, it’s hot!) and set aside.
Dispose of the rest. Now add margarine or butter to
same pot and melt. Chop onions and place in the pot,
sauteing until golden. Add flour to the pot and stir
quickly. Allow to cook a bit to golden color, just
about 2 minutes. Pour in the broth. Stir and allow to
boil everything, stirring regularly as sauce thickens.
Add seasonings (including capers) and stir. When
the sauce thickened, add the chopped chicken and
stir again. Cut the asparagus stalks in half. Add
some of the packing water into your sauce for extra
flavor. Place the asparagus into pot. Then drain and
add in mushrooms as well. Mix everything and turn
the heat down to low. Place a lid on the pot and
simmer for 20 minutes. If the sauce seems too thick,
add some broth.
This dish will be served with rice.
APPLE STRUDEL
Ingredients:
(for 4 persons)
1 1/4 cups apple juice
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/2 pound apples, peeled,
cored and sliced 1/4-inch thick
1/2 cup dark seedless raisins
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup chopped pecans
4 sheets phyllo dough
1/3 cup melted butter
3 tablespoons fine dried
breadcrumbs
Confectioners' sugar,
for garnish
Vanilla ice cream, for serving
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. Line a baking sheet with
parchment paper.
In a small bowl, create a slurry by combining 1/4 cup of the
apple juice with the cornstarch. Mix until smooth and set
aside. In a large saucepan over medium heat, cook the apples
with the remaining 1 cup apple juice, raisins, sugar and
cinnamon until the apples are tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir the
cornstarch slurry (it may have settled) and add it to the apple
mixture, stirring constantly until smooth and lump free.
Simmer for 1 minute more, stirring constantly. Remove from
the heat and cool. Stir in the pecans, cover and chill. Lay out
1 phyllo sheet on a clean, flat, lightly floured surface. Brush
with some melted butter and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon
breadcrumbs. Repeat this procedure with two more layers of
phyllo, butter and breadcrumbs. Top with the fourth sheet of
phyllo. Spread the apple filling evenly onto the phyllo surface,
leaving a 1/2-inch clean edge on all sides. Roll into a
log, folding the edges at each end beneath the log and brush
with some melted butter. Carefully place the strudel on the
prepared baking sheet, seam-side down. Bake the strudel
until golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from the oven
and cool for 15 minutes before cutting into 2-inch slices.
Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar just before serving. Serve
plain or with ice cream.
