Fresh look
The clubhouse has been neglected for too long and it’s time we
restore it to help maintain the integrity of the physical buildings.
What’s new at HMGC? The focus has been on the exterior of the
clubhouse facilities and giving it a fresh new look.
• Repainting of the clubhouse, pro shop, and cart barn has taken
place along with a fresh coat of paint to the pool house and the
wood fencing to bring the buildings and color together with the
same look.
• A replacement of the majority of wood soffits, trim, fascia, and
support posts has been a part of the project. As well as many other
areas of building including new gutters and down spouts. The
under roofed area of the breezeway between the pro shop and
clubhouse will be enclosed.
• The tattered green awning is being replaced with a new frame
and contemporary black awning. It will remain year round unlike
the previous awning that was removed every winter.
We hope you enjoy the fresh new look to Highland. Come out and
enjoy your club! - See next month’s Highlander for the after photo.
chair-person: Michael Lang
NEw Dining Room Supervisor: Jessica bailey
As far back as I can remember, my fondest memories
include food—prepping, baking, eating, and feeding.
My childhood summers were spent on a step stool plating
desserts and salads for a buffet line at a now closed
destination restaurant in Tecumseh, MI. When I was old
enough to not raise the ire of child labor groups, I began
waiting tables after school and on weekends. Through
high school, college, and even my 10 year career as a
legal secretary, I enjoyed providing quality service to aid
in a memorable dining experience to thousands of hungry
guests at a popular casual fine dining restaurant on
Wamplers Lake in Brooklyn, MI.
For me, the key to a memorable dining experience is
a team effort that includes the front of the house and
the heart of the house, the kitchen. Quality service isn't
only the server's attentiveness or personality. It's the
knowledge of the products offered by an establishment,
from the wines and liquors at the bar, to the ingredients and preparation of dishes on the menu.
It's having the confidence of being able to guide a member through a remarkable meal prepared
with the finest ingredients. It's paying close attention to all of the details from the cleanliness of a
table, the warmth of a dining room, and the presentation of the food. Most of all, quality service
is knowing that at the end of a meal the member is more than satisfied with the delicious feast
and libations set before them. As a whole, my service philosophy is rather simple: to treat each
member that dines at the Meadows as if they were a guest in my own home.
The Club is looking to provide a diverse environment to accommodate
different facets and interest of the membership. In response, we have
created “Clubs within the Club.” Each Club is organized and chaired by
the members but hosted at Highland.
Summer Fitness workshop Series
the first workshops focus on health:
workshop #3 (pilates) June 30 | 9am | $30
Learn to build strength properly from deep within the intrinsic
muscles along the spine. This changes the way you workout
and move through life in general.
the final workshops focus on fitness:
workshop #4 (Kettlebells) July 28 | 9am | $30
Learn to properly recruit all muscles in the body to increase
strength and power. This way of moving helps in sports or just
picking up a bag of mulch without throwing your back out.
workshop #5: (Metabolic blast) aug 25 | 9am | $30
The mother of all workouts! If you are pushed for time or
want to get more out of your workout, this workshop is a must!
Junior Golf
As the spring goes away and school lets out, our junior golf programs
begin. This year we have enhanced our program for juniors to
learn the game and elevate their skills. Starting Friday, June 8 we
will begin our year long program that takes place for every Friday
through August 3. This program is available for juniors ages 4-11
to learn more about the game. Building on 2011, we will continue
with the advanced development program, structured for juniors
12 and up. This program is a game enhancement program that
helps juniors elevate their games for junior tournaments and
prepare them for High School golf. A continuation of last fall’s
Junior High League we have added a summer league program
that is designed for High school development. One of the goals
to this year’s program was to help junior’s grow and develop as
young players. I believe these programs will help grow today’s
youth and lead them to enjoy a game for life. Additional information
is available in the Pro Shop and from the Club’s website.
Rounds played: It’s amazing the difference a year makes. By the
end of May, we will have doubled the number of rounds played
this year compared to last season. In 2012, we will have over
3,000 more rounds year-to-date, which is the equivalent to a full
month.
June Tournaments: In the upcoming months we have some fun
events to participate in. On Wednesday, June 13 we have a Member
Guest, which is a 2PM shotgun. The next weekend June 16 and
17 we will crown this year’s Senior Club Champion. Thursday,
Pro Tip
Driving Range Etiquette: When using the driving
range and short game areas this year, try to contain your
divots into a tight pattern. After hitting a shot, place the
ball directly behind the original divot keeping it as close
to the edges as possible. Start forward and work your
way back in a nice tight pattern. Proceed with this format
throughout your practice session. This will reduce
the turf area that is taken up during a practice session.

Sustainability
Recently, I was at a turf maintenance seminar about “sustainability”
as it applies to golf course and turf maintenance. It would seem
that the word “sustainability” has eclipsed “green” as the buzz
word of choice in our industry. Sustainability, as defined by the Golf
Course Superintendent’s Association of America is “the integration
of environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic
viability as a critical and never-ending goal.” We are focusing not
just on doing what is right for the planet and human health, but
also keeping the golf and turf industry as a whole profitable and
relevant.
In our corner of Ohio, the current state of the golf industry is no
mystery. The amount of money spent on rounds of golf and club
memberships has declined steadily and dramatically over the last
several years. Along with that, the idea of golf courses as waterguzzling,
pesticide-laden, environment-wrecking atrocities is still
very prevalent. The algae blooms in Lake Erie, drought in 38% of
the US, phosphorus issues all over the great lakes and eastern seaboard,
and a lingering negative perception by non-golfers all make
for a public relations nightmare. I doubt a government bailout
would ever be extended our direction.
The other side of this is people like us in the grounds department
that depend on the industry not for recreation but for a livelihood.
In a recent survey by the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation, the turf
industry in Ohio alone accounts for $4.6 billion annually in economic
impact and 42,000 jobs between golf courses, lawn care, municipalities,
and public entities.
From an environmental perspective, the maintenance of Ohio’s 4
million acres in turf also contributes greatly to the health of the
planet. While trees tend to get all of the press,
turfgrass is also excellent at sequestering carbon.
An average home lawn can sequester 300 lbs of
carbon per year, and a single fairway can grab
almost 1500 lbs due to the increased density.
According to the US Department of Energy, a 50year-old
hardwood tree only grabs around 127 lbs!
The trick on our end is to manage things carefully
so we aren’t putting more carbon into the
turf maintenance in the forms of fuel, fertilizer,
shipping etc. than we are getting out of the atmosphere.
Watching carbon closely benefits the Club
in controlling costs. Here at Highland, new hybrid
fairway mowers, filling unnecessary bunkers, unmaintained
rough areas, reduced creek maintenance,
more efficient watering techniques, use of
more efficient chemicals and fertilizers, and many
other small things have combined to get us started
in the right direction. New and exciting research,
chemicals, fertilizers, sprinklers, techniques, and
fuel-efficient machines are becoming available
constantly. We strive each year to stay up-to-date
with all of these and use what we can to move our
facility forward environmentally while hopefully
loosening up the bottom line and keeping the golf
course in great shape.
