Bartlett described his visit <strong>in</strong> 1842 to the family of the wealthiest Jew <strong>in</strong><br />
Jerusalem. <strong>The</strong>re he met the women <strong>in</strong> the family as well as the men and<br />
expressed his surprise at the "equality" of the women with the males of the<br />
family, <strong>in</strong> contrast to the manner of "...the wives of Oriental Christians." A<br />
later visitor, Elizabeth Anne F<strong>in</strong>n, describes the profusion of gold jewelry<br />
worn by the women of this family.<br />
