EPRI Director's Words 

The Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute was 

established in 1974 by the presidential decree No. 541 

to supply the petroleum sector with researches, studies, 

consultancy and chemicals to contribute in pushing the 

wheels of petroleum industry in Egypt and the Arab 

countries. 

EPRI houses seven research departments and eight service centers 

in which excellent elite of scientists and researchers work in all the fields 

of petroleum industry, namely production, refining and manufacturing. 

EPRI's laboratories house many of the modern scientific apparatus that 

are operated by efficient technicians. 

Moreover, EPRI has a specialized scientific library that contains the 

most recent references and publications. Recognizing the importance of 

training in raising the efficiency of the staff, EPRI`s management 

organizes training programs at the highest level of effectiveness directed 

towards research personnel within EPRI, university staff, and petroleum 

industry technical staff. 

EPRI is recognized by its strong link with the petroleum sector in 

Egypt as it works continually on transferring researches results from the 

laboratory phase to the industrial and field phases to be used in the 

petroleum and civil sectors inside and outside Egypt. 

I hope that this booklet sheds spotlight on some of the activities and 

services presented by the Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute to the 

petroleum sector.

EPRI HIGHLIGHTS 

Construction and Organization 

EPRI has been established by the Presidential Decree no.541 for the year 

1974 as one of the research institutes following the Ministry of Scientific 

Research headed by his Excellency Minister of Higher Education and 

Scientific research, with the aim of supplying the national petroleum 

industry with studies, scientific research work, consultations, and analytical 

and technical services individually or together with other parties.

France has thankfully contributed to the erection of EPRI by supplying It 

with a number of lacking laboratory appliances and scientific equipment. 

The French Petroleum Research Institute (IFP) has contributed a lot in the 

form of consultancy, formation of a number of researchers and technical 

personnel within IFP, besides carrying out a number of joint research 

projects with EPRI. 

In compliance with the Presidential Decree the chairman of the board of 

directors of EPRI is the chairman of the board of directors of the Egyptian 

General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC). Furthermore a number of the 

senior personnel within the petroleum sector as nominated by his 

Excellency the Minister of Petroleum join the board of EPRI. 

At the present time, EPRI is honoured by having his Excellency 

Eng. Sameh Fahmy Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources as 

chairman of the board of EPRI in his capacity as chairman of the EGPC. 

Since its establishment in 1976 and up to the present time EPRI `s 

organization includes 7 research departments which cover the different 

activities of the oil and gas sector. 

With increasing research activities and the development of a number of 

research findings to the application stage, EPRI started to establish service 

centers. Presently, EPRI houses 8 service centers offering their services to 

the different petroleum industry sectors.

Research Activities at EPRI 

Research activities could be subdivided as follows: 

a) Scientific registrations for M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees: 

The number of attained degrees since 1974 till now is: 

(202) Registrations for Ph.D. 

(264) Registrations for M.Sc. 

Among them (22) Ph.D. and MSc. Degrees are attained from 

America, Europe and Japan. 

(6) Scientific missions for attaining Ph.D degree from abroad this year. 

b) Research projects and applied studies: 

• Research projects dealing with problems solving and/or developments. 

• Energy conservation in petroleum refineries, glass, fertilizers, food and 

steel industries. 

• Applied researches and studies for the production of chemicals supplied 

to the petroleum sector from local materials instead of/or even better 

than their imported equivalents

Training: 

EPRI runs various training programs for EPRI`s personnel, individuals from the 

different industry sectors, students and graduates of local and Arab 

universities. 

Information: 

An increasing number of scientific publications and reports are available at 

EPRI`s library. Moreover EPRI receives a number of scientific magazines. 

Copies of the MSc and Ph.D granted works are also available. 

EPRI`s library services are available to the personnel of the petroleum 

industry as well as the Egyptian universities staff and students. Internet 

services are also accessible to EPRI`s personnel. 

Scientific Publications: 

• The number of scientific contributions either published and/or 

presented to local, regional, or international journals and conferences is 

over (2500) since 1974 and until 2009. 

• EPRI started to issue the Egyptian Petroleum Journal since 1992. 

In September 2008, it has been accredited. (Chemical Abstracts: 

CA69639-ISSN 1110-0621) 

Conferences Activities : 

• EPRI `s personnel take part in quite a big number of conferences. 

• EPRI takes part in organization and hosting a number of conferences 

and seminars e.g. the international Petroleum, Environment and Mineral 

Resources conference which is annually held at EPRI. 

• EPRI is a home to the Egyptian Committee of the World Petroleum 

Congresses since 1991. 

Accreditation According to ISO/IEC 17025:2005: 

The Central Analytical Lab and Chemicals Services and Development Center 

succeeded to get the accreditation according to ISO/IEC 17025:2005. Other 

labs and centers are on their way to get this accreditation. 

The Occupational health and safety & environmental management system: 

EPRI`s labs and specialized service centers have succeeded to obtain the two 

certificates; (ISO 14001:2004) and (OHSAS 18001 : 2007 ) after the estimation 

done by an internationally accredited German organization.

Fields of research: 

The department includes three laboratories: 

1- Sedimentological laboratory 

Its field is Sedimentological, Petrophysical, Geochemistry Inorganic, 

Organic and Evaporites

Its field is Gravity and Magnetic, Well Logging and Seismic 

Interpretation

1- Drilling fluids laboratory 

The main objective of this lab is to study the physical and rheological 

properties for the drilling fluids and their additives under high 

temperature and pressure. 

2- PVT laboratory 

The main objective is to study the physical properties of crude oil under 

conditions similar to that existing in the reservoir such as pressure, 

temperature and their effect on volume. 

3- Improved oil recovery laboratory (IOR) 

The main objective of this lab is to study the effect of using 

temperature, chemicals and bacteria on increasing the petroleum 

production from the petroleum fields in Egypt.

This department is concerned with the field of petroleum, natural gas, 

and condensate chemistry, also in analysis and evaluation of petroleum 

crude oil and it's derivatives of liquids and gaseous fuels and treatment 

of natural gas during different production stages. Also, the department 

is concerned with environmental studies specially for petroleum 

pollution and its prevention. 


1-Spectroscopic analysis laboratory 

The main objective of this lab is to use spectroscopic techniques and 

their application in petroleum, also, in qualification of different anions 

and cations in water. 

2-Gas chromatography laboratory 

The main objective is to use chromatographic techniques and their 

application, in analysis of natural gas and condensate. 

3-Oil analysis laboratory. 

The main objective is analysis and evaluation of crude oil according to 

the standard procedures (ASTM-IP-ISO-…).

It works on the preparation and evaluation of catalysts physically and 

chemically, also, evaluation of stunts and the optimum control of some 

petroleum refining processes. 

The department includes three research laboratories: 

1. Catalysis laboratory 

• Preparation of conventional and new catalysts and their 

evaluation to select the most suitable one in petroleum industry. 

• Studies on different catalytic refining processes. 

2. Chemical refining laboratory 

• Improvement of different kinds of fuel. 

• The optimum control of some petroleum refining processes. 

3. Physical refining laboratory 

• Production of different lubricating oils generally and specially in 

waxy distillates.

• Enhancement of the performance of petroleum products by 

means of petroleum additives.

improvement of the properties of the fuel (gasoline - kerosene -

Nature of work: 

• Desludging, Cleaning and gas freeing of storage petroleum tanks and 

pressure vessels such as desalters, towers, separators, heat 

exchangers, heater treaters and pipe lines using EPRI’s Patent. 

• Recover oils and hydrocarbons from open pits and drilling mud to 

alleviate environmental pollutions. 

Principle of EPRI Method 

Although it is well known that the precipitated sludge is very difficult to 

re-dissolve in the crude oil, EPRI method is based on re-dissolving it by 

the aid of petroleum based additives in concentration not exceeding few 

parts per millions and slight raising of temperature.

worthwhile and saleable product. This is applied through the required

Since its inception in 1989, and as part of EPRI program for petroleum 

development, EPRI onshore and offshore inspection and quality 

assurance groups, have continued to strengthen and enhance their 

capabilities to meet the challenges of the technological advancements in 

the fields of polyolefine coatings, foam insulation coating, painting, 

welding, and concrete coating systems. The business has grown and 

prospered over the years and now SPC covers most of the surface 

protection projects including all types of coating and painting. Services 

include multiple coating processes which are performed for a wide 

variety of clients. Fusion bonded epoxy and three layer polyethylene 

coating are just two of many coating systems available. 

Coating group: 

This includes three layer PE and PP coating systems and their field joints, 

concrete coating, single and dual layer FBE system. Our QA/QC groups at 

SPC also cover the insulation of petroleum pipe-lines with foam systems, 

testing and evaluation of painting and coating materials, internal lining, 

welding, painting and evaluation and protection of a lot of petroleum 

projects from corrosion. In addition, SPC invaded the field of onshore by 

successful completion of many onshore projects including inspection of 

more than 10000 km pipe lengths for different petroleum companies. 

SPC has extended its distinguished quality professional services and 

continued its mission with a vibrant determination for ultimate success. 

In addition to its experience in this field, SPC offers its technical 

information as a consultant in this field for some of petroleum 

companies.

Painting group: 

Most petroleum equipment, especially welded tanks and lines, are 

painted immediately after construction to prevent corrosion. 

Galvanized, stainless steel, nickel-plated, and other corrosion-resisted 

materials require painting in addition. SPC covers coating of metal 

surfaces encountered at shore activities, including their selection, 

application (and surface preparation), and maintenance in a state of 

acceptable condition. The coatings covered are not limited to organic 

paint materials, with the exception of inorganic zinc coatings which are 

included, because they are most commonly used in conjunction with 

organic coatings and are applied by spray, like organic coatings. In 

addition, SPC is continually performing paint qualification testing and 

analysis for a lot of paint production facilities such as: Sigma, Juton, 

Copalin, International, Saybis and others.

Training activity: 

SPC conducts specialized training programs for technical personnel from 

petroleum production companies, refineries, petrochemical plants, 

automotive industry and power plants. These moderately priced courses, 

designed to impart the necessary knowledge and skills are conducted by 

talented and experienced scientists. Participants are provided ample 

opportunities to have hands-on experience in both coating and painting 

fields. 

Staff: 

The number of personnel in SPC is 26: (6) professors, (5) researchers, (4) 

B.Sc. holders, (6) engineers , (3) technicians and (2) administrative 

members. 


Our primary responsibility of inspection is the assurance that the 

coating/lining is installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s 

specification, correct selection of the proper coating and lining for a 

particular piece of equipment. We have highly qualified experienced 

personnel along with continued training for all employees. We are 

keeping commitment to continuing coating and painting research and 

development. SPC center is among the largest and most technically 

advanced lab facilities in EPRI. Services include multiple coating 

processes which are performed for a wide variety of clients. Fusion 

bonded epoxy and three layer polyethylene, polypropylene coating are 

just few of many coating systems available. In addition to coating and 

painting applications, double jointing, (welding of two 40 linear feet pipe 

sections into one 80 foot length), fabrication (cutting, re-beveling and 

welding) and remedial services are available. These services can be 

prepared at our facility and then can be mobilized and carried out on 

site. 

Experience: 

In addition, the center has a lot of successful technical consultations with 

several petroleum and petrochemical companies. Moreover, the center 

supervised on the pipe coating of the Arab line to transfer gas to Jordan, 

the Smart Village and presented consultations in thermal coating of the 

pipes of cold and hot waters for gases and supervised on the line of the 

international company (Technip). And the imported companies dealt with 

are: petroleum pipe line co., Gasco, Petrobel, Khalda, Rashed, Burullus 

gas co., Qarun, NAT gas and Misr for petroleum….. etc.

in both field and laboratory work required for the inspection and 

quality surveillance of materials, equipment and work performed by 

subcontractors in addition to supervising and auditing, on site,

The center undertakes the responsibility of the evaluation and analysis of 

asphalt for different pavement companies, consultancy services to 

asphalt producers and various user organizations. Training courses and 

novel asphalt applications have been developed and produced for crack 

filling and sealing, (hot and cold). Special polymeric asphalt mixes for 

steel bridge paving, (Dar Elsalam Steel Bridge 2006). 

Special materials used as tack coat between steel, concrete, and asphalt 

mix surfaces, have been used in numerous paving projects. 

Beside the above activities the center has developed the production of a 

new formula used as Thermal Expansion Joints, known as EPRI SEALANT 

77. 

The sealant has predominantly plastic properties with some elastic 

recovery when stressed for short periods, for use as renovation of high 

movement thermal expansion joints, either for pavement renovation or 

joint replacement. No limits for traffic intensity, speed, or high loads on 

the roads.

The center has many mixers and reactors to produce different directused 

blends. In addition, the center disposes measuring instruments 

to perform the physical and chemical analysis of bitumen by standard

1. Evaluation and improvement of the quality & control of the

that existing in the reservoir such as pressure & temperature and their 

effects on volume (Phase behavior). 

The center offers the services to the petroleum industry (upstream &

required analyses to evaluate the reservoirs & the produced oil and gas.

The center has many equipment that help in performing its role, e.g. 

manual and automatic pumps, 4 pressure cells, an automated control 

pressure cell, gases-volume measuring apparatus, a pressure 

viscosimeter, gas analyzer, a demsimeter. Besides, the PVT center was 

innovated in 2005 by adding a special unit to study the phase behavior 

and the physical properties for the condensate and its gases under 

high temperature and pressure. This unit is considered the only one in 

the Middle East as it uses a free mercury system. The center, as well 

carries out studies and analyses for a number of companies;, the most 

distinguished are; Khalda, Agiba, the General Company for Petroleum, 

Badr Al-Din, Al Mansoura, the South Dabaa, Al Kantara, Vegaz, 

Amapetico, Kuwaiti for oil, Centereun, Qarun, Red Osaco, IPR, WEPCO, 

EBS, AOC, INA, Petzed oil search, NPC. 

In addition, EPRI contracted with some Sudanese petroleum 

companies as; Petro-energy, Petro-Dar, WNPOC, GNPOC, to carry out

Experience: 

The main role of central lab is to perform analysis and studies for the 

petroleum companies in Egypt. We have analyzed water (formation, 

injection, waste and tap), on-site measurement of size and count of 

suspended solid for liquid and oil for companies like (Bapetco, Agiba, 

Qarun, Merlon, scimitar, petrobel…..) and quantitative analysis for crude 

oil, condensate and gases by GC in order to investigate hydrocarbons 

distribution, finger print and composition for crude oil like (Sidi-krir, 

Merlon, Bapetco…). All routine analysis for crude oil and lube oils are 

done periodically per month for cement companies like (Assiut, Tora and 

Helwan…etc). EPRI central labs conducted advanced studies for different 

petroleum companies, for example complete crude oil assay of Shukheir 

and Shukheir blended crude oil for Oil Search Company, monitoring of 

chloride at different stages of gas production process in Obaiyed gas 

plant for Shell Company and geochemical study of El-hamd and Bakr oil 

field for General Petroleum Company.

Corrosiometer, Salt content analyzer, Spectrophotometer, Pensky- 

Martens Closed Cup Flash Point, and Warren spring apparatus, as well as 

some other small portable instruments. 

Experience: 

CSDC supplies its products to many petroleum companies and civilian 

sectors such as: Qarun, Agiba, El-Nasr Pet., Petrobel, General Pet. Co., 

Sues Oil Processing, Geisum, Suco, Norpetco, Oasis, Wepco, Zafco, 

Sumed, Assiut Petroleum Refinery, Osuco, Petrodara, Eshpetco, Khalda, 

Arabian Gas Pipeline, Petrojet, Suez Canal Authority, Damietta Port 

Authority, and Daqahlia Sugar. Also, CSDC has great experience in H2S 

Management; one of the Egyptian petroleum companies could produce 

more than 10 million barrels of crude from sour wells through the last 

five years using EPRI product. Besides, CSDC has great experience in Slop 

Oil, and Oil Spill Treatment. CSDC product "EPRI 910" has been 

successfully used in treating the big oil spill which occurred in the Suez 

Canal. Besides, CSDC product" EPRI 4400C" has been successfully used in 

performing the hydrostatic test of the Arabian Gas Pipeline. 

Currently CSDC produces the multipurpose grease which is used in 

greasing the transportation vehicles of EPRI.

on Rheometer DV III ultra according to the international accreditation 

EJAK IN The Ministry of Industry.

aluminum chloride (EPRI 1500) for drinking water clarification.

THE LIBRARY 

The Library 

The library was established as a specialized scientific one in 1976. It 

contains around (2954) books and scientific references in several fields, 

for example: Petroleum (Production- Refining…..), Chemistry (Organic – 

Inorganic – Bio), Chemical Engineering, Nanotechnology & Computer 

Science, (27) foreign scientific journals in different fields that serve the 

research work at EPRI, (262) theses of master's degrees and (200) theses 

of doctorate and more than (2500) national and international published 

researches. Moreover, the library disposes the full editions of the 

Egyptian Journal of Petroleum that publishes the scientific researches in 

the fields of petroleum, petrochemical and energy and related topics. It 

has been abstracted since sep. 2008: Abstracted: Chemical Abstracts: 

CA69636-ISSN: 1110-0621. 

The importance of the library lies on being the corner stone in every 

research work; especially in its initiative stages for the scientific 

acquisitions it contains. The library is developed continuously to be an 

electronic one to cope with the needs of our age. To achieve this aim; a 

database was established with all its acquisitions to be transmitted on 

the website of the internet – ready for all its users. Besides, the library 

provides its users by the reference research service and the original 

documents from the Egyptian National Scientific and Technological 

Information Network – for the scientific staff at EPRI free of charge.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 

Internet Management: 

The internet and information technology was established in 2000 with 

the aim of making a link between the research departments, service 

centers at EPRI with the outside organizations, providing the 

researchers with abstracts, full texts, references and patents through a 

high quality service. 

The Internet services extend to cover all the IT services at EPRI as: 

presenting technical consultancy, publishing IT culture, organizing 

conferences, seminars and scientific workshops that deal with the 

internet, and performing computer maintenance. Moreover, services 

include: E-mail services, security programs for computers, database 

and software administration, websites and electronic libraries and 

internet connectivity with a speed of 8 MB/sec. 

All these services are offered by highly qualified and effective 

personnel and due to the existence of a strong internet network at 

EPRI, the institute participated in three international publishing 

houses in Europe and America to facilitate getting magazines and 

scientific researches for the researchers.

research thanks to its highly qualified research staff and to the 

existence of the most advanced analysis and evaluation equipment.

Recognizing the importance of training in upraising the efficiency of 

workers, the training committee at EPRI has prepared and undertaken 

specialized training programs in most fields of petroleum and gas

aides in research institutes and universities as well as engineers, 

chemists and technicians of the petroleum sector in Egypt and Arab
