of epidemiological approaches for describing and quantifying health problems, and
methodological approaches for assessing risk factors and disease etiology.
S55-5003 Foundations of Public Health: Biostatistics Summer, Fall
This course provides an introduction to quantitative data analysis as it is applied in public health.
Biostatistics is one of the core disciplines of public health; but it also provides a set of analytic
tools which are used across all the other core and associated public health disciplines. This
course will teach students how to think about data clearly; how to describe important
characteristics of public health data; how to design, implement, and interpret basic statistical
analyses which are appropriate for the research question and the characteristics of the data; and
how to communicate analysis results effectively.
S55-5004 Foundations of Public Health: Health Administration and Policy Fall, Spring
This course provides an overview of the structure and functions of the U.S. Health Care System,
the relationship between the health care delivery system and Public Health, and an overview of
the health care policy process in the United States. The existing and evolving financing,
organizational structures, and delivery systems are described along with alternatives that have
been discussed and developed domestically and internationally. The course also introduces key
concepts in health care management. Finally, the course provides students with the tools
necessary to evaluate and analyze health policy and health care systems in the U.S.
S55-5005 Foundations of Public Health: Environmental Health Fall, Spring
This course presents a broad survey of the major environmental health issues facing
contemporary society in first and third world countries. The course provides an overview of the
interaction of the physical, psychological, and social environments of individuals in which they
work and live. The course presents ecological concerns along with factors related to personal and
community health.
S55-5010 Cross-Cutting Themes in Public Health Fall
The purpose of this course is to introduce public health students to the crucial and timely crosscutting
themes in public health. The course will cover a range of topics, including: the role of
transdisciplinary science and collaboration in the development, implementation and translation
of science to the population at large; evidence-based approaches to decision making in
contemporary public health practice; methods for dissemination and implementation of public
health to policy and practice; the importance of health disparities to the study of public health,
and the role of ethics in the profession of public health.
Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving in Public Health
Fall, Spring
In these courses, students will be exposed to a wide range of perspectives from diverse
disciplines about the various causes and potential solutions to a current public health topic.
Students will work in groups to integrate these transdisciplinary perspectives into a richer
understanding of the problem and propose new solutions that draw upon the contributions of
several disciplines. The course will include four key components: (1) a refresher on
transdisciplinary problem solving; (2) an overview of the epidemiology of the public health

problem; (3) a series of structured presentations on the public health problem; and, (4)
presentations from student groups on their transdisciplinary solutions to the problem. The
specific public health topics covered in the course will vary from semester to semester, with a
handful of these transdisciplinary problem-solving courses offered each semester.
S55-5230 Applied Linear Modeling Fall, Spring
This course focuses on statistical modeling and analysis methods relevant to epidemiological and
clinical research, as well as applied research in behavioral, social, and health sciences. A general
linear models approach is taken to data analysis strategies using linear, logistic, and poisson
regression, as well as ANOVA methods for repeated measures.
S55-5240 Planning Evidence-Based Programs and Interventions Fall, Spring
This course focuses on program evaluation, outcomes research, cost effectiveness research,
methods for executing and evaluating health education intervention plans, quantitative and
qualitative methods and their application to public health practice.
S55-5701 Practicum Every semester
This course provides supervised experience in application of public health techniques through
work in a public health agency or other health care organization. Students will complete 360
practicum hours to receive credit.
S55-5901 Culminating Experience Every semester
In the final semester of study, all MPH students will participate with a culminating experience to
examine their knowledge of the core material and the transdisciplinary problem solving approach
of the MPH program. Acceptable performance with this course is required to complete the MPH
program.
Sequencing of Courses
Students should first take as many of the Foundations courses as possible, in addition to the
Cross-Cutting Themes course before enrolling in (a) the research methods sequence, and (b)
transdisciplinary problem-solving courses. Students must have met the school’s human biology
requirements before enrolling in the program.
Foundations in Public Health Courses
Students are required to take all 5 foundations level course at the Brown School. Exceptions to
this policy are:
1. If the course has been transferred in upon the student’s admittance to the program;
2. Upon approval from the Associate Dean for Public Health under unique and/or special
circumstances.
Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving Courses
Students are required to take two, 3-credit hour transdisciplinary problem courses as part of the
MPH curriculum. In these intensive seminars, students will focus on a contemporary issue in
public health and work through the issue from problem to solution, drawing on a wide range of
perspectives from diverse disciplines about the various causes and potential solutions to the
problem. Students will work in teams (most likely teams of 4-to-5 students) to integrate these
transdisciplinary perspectives into a richer understanding of the problem and propose new
solutions that draw upon the contributions of the diverse disciplines represented in public health,
as well as the cross-cutting themes introduced earlier in the curriculum.
Since the transdisciplinary course will be taken in parallel with the research methods sequence,
students will be encouraged to use these methods in the development of the project reports in the
transdisciplinary course. Students will take 2 transdisciplinary problem-solving courses, and will
not be allowed to repeat topics.
Practicum
The MPH practicum is an essential component of a public health professional degree program.
The practicum is designed to provide authentic practice situations where theoretical knowledge
and concepts from the classroom and literature can be applied to the concrete demands of the
public health setting. The learning that occurs in this context complements academic courses
with application of theory and concepts. MPH practicum hours (i.e., 360 practicum hours, with a
grade of “PASS”) are to be completed under the supervision of a field instructor who has a
master’s-level (MPH, MSW, MBA, MA, MS, etc.) or higher degree, and who directly works in
public health or is connected to the agency’s public health mission.
Electives
Students may choose any of a wide variety of knowledge building and practice oriented courses
for their electives from a list of approved electives that will be provided each semester, drawn
from the MPH program, other courses in the Brown School, and courses in other Schools on
campus including the Medical School, and schools on the Danforth campus.
Students should consult their advisor when choosing electives in order to make sure the set
of electives meet the student’s long‐term career objectives, and that courses are consistent
with achieving public health competencies. Students can take a course not listed on the
approved list with the approval of their advisor and the Associate Dean for Public Health.
The number of elective credit hours available to students is nine (9).
Students interested in taking classes outside the Brown School will have to submit a Brown
School Preapproval for Transfer of Credit form that can be found on InsideBrown under Forms.
Courses must be at the graduate level and have a substantial public health content. To transfer

the credit, students must earn a B or better for the class. Online courses will not be accepted for
credit towards the degree.
Dual Degree Programs
MPH/MSW
A dual degree – Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Public Health (MPH) – is
available for students, allowing the student to complete the curriculum in both programs in about
80 credit hours, saving the students about 20% of the credit hours they would take if pursuing the
two degrees separately. Dual degree students should generally be able to complete their
requirements for both degrees within three calendar years. Separate applications to both
programs are required, but an expedited admissions process is available for currently enrolled
students. To complete the dual degrees in three years, courses in the MSW and MPH curriculum
will be approved as “equivalent alternative” courses. In addition, with approval from both
programs, students can use the same practice experience in the MPH program as well as the
MSW program to meet the concentration practicum requirement. Courses cannot be doublecounted,
and students will need to complete the 78 credit hours required for the dual degree
program.
MPH/MBA
Washington University’s MPH/MBA program will combine the foundational courses of graduate
level business and public health degrees with a total of 87 course hours and require two-and-onehalf
to three years to complete. Graduates with the dual MPH/MBA degree will have the
interdisciplinary, functional, and critical thinking skill set needed for distinctive impact and longrun
leadership in hospitals and pharmaceutical firms, healthcare consulting, policy think tanks,
public administration and other management roles across the healthcare industry spectrum. The
interdisciplinary dual-degree program brings together faculty renowned for their leading-edge
scholarly research in business and public health, a cutting-edge curriculum and cross-industry
collaboration.
The MPH/MBA program combines the foundational courses of the master of business
administration and master of public health degrees. Students participate in a summer internship
after the first year of MBA courses and a practicum after the first year of MPH courses.
Applicants must be accepted into the existing MBA and MPH programs and must apply for the
dual degree before the end of the first year of study in either graduate program. A GMAT or
GRE test is required. Students start in August and will spend the first full year in either the
MBA or MPH program.
Curriculum Program Planning, Forms and Instructions
As noted above, the curriculum design of the MPH program is straightforward, consisting of:
foundation, cross-cutting themes, a research methods sequence, a practicum experience,
transdisciplinary problem-solving courses, and electives. The MPH Curriculum Planning form
allows the students and advisors to record each course requirement as it is completed and can be
found on Inside Brown.
