Roadshow
Schools have had a duty to promote community cohesion
since September 2008 and OFSTED began to inspect this
aspect of schools work from September 2008. This
deliberate delay was designed to give schools time to
understand these new requirements and the opportunity to
develop and articulate their community plans over the
course of the academic year.
We were therefore delighted
when our contribution towards
community cohesion was given
the highest category, Grade 1.
The inspection report stated
that ‘The School’s efforts to
promote community cohesion
both locally and within the
wider community are excellent.
It is able to demonstrate
effectively the impact of its
work so far, particularly with
regard to creating harmony in
local communities.
Our highest priority in relation
to our community is of course
to provide a safe, secure and
supportive learning
environment for young people.
Somewhere they can access a
broad range of high quality
opportunities which will see
them flourish and develop as
responsible individuals who
can play an active role in a fast
changing modern world.
It is also the case that where a
school clearly has spare
capacity in terms of its
resources then it should be
outward facing and create a
whole range of opportunities
for a wide range of people
within its local community. I
am sure that you will be aware
from earlier publications that
the Headteacher and
Governors of Kings’ are fully
committed to the further
development of community
based projects over the course
of the coming year.
Under the careful stewardship
of Ben Ward and Stuart
Simpson the Tower and Sports
Centre at Kings’ continue to
provide a wide range of
educational and recreational
opportunities which attract
huge numbers of individuals
and community groups. Our
partnership with Winchester
City Council combined with
Extended Schools funding
created a vibrant and exciting
mix of activities for young
people to enjoy during the
August holidays.
Our adult learner numbers
have nearly doubled during the
last year taking advantage of
courses ranging from still life
painting and drawing through
to languages and courses in
Microsoft applications.
We are also extremely proud of
our links with voluntary sector
groups such as the Alzheimers
Society, Blue Apple and local
support groups for parents
whose children suffer from
autism.
During the last year Higher
Education establishments
within Hampshire have shown
a real willingness to engage in
partnership activity with
schools. Reading and
Southampton University are
both involved in a new
initiative which involves using
enterprise as a means of
delivering aspects of Science,
Mathematics, Technology and
Engineering in the secondary
sector. Kings’ has been named
as a lead partner school for
this scheme. Closer to home,
we are developing some
excellent links with Winchester
University and in particular
their School of Business. They
have kindly agreed to supply
business mentors for the 185
pupils in Year 7 and 8 who
manage their own businesses.
On a more global scale our
Languages Department are
putting the finishing touches
to a submission to the British
Council in the hope that Kings’
will be awarded International
School status. All the activity
centred around this award will
greatly support and enhance
our provision as a Specialist
Language School.
The year ahead promises to be
an exciting period for the
school as far as our community
engagement activities are
concerned and I look forward
to the opportunity of reporting
back to you in the next issue
of Kings’ Community.
new season highlights
The Tower’s auditorium has never been
busier. Since becoming part of Kings’ the
auditorium has played host to a number of
music events, comedy shows and theatre
productions and this trend is set to
continue into 2010. Already booked are a
number of highlights, none more so than
the return of The Hamsters on Thursday
11th February. Described by Radio 2’s Bob
Harris as “fabulous, one of Britain’s very
best bands” they play a set of classic guitar
fused rock featuring, of course, ZZ Top and
Hendrix. Fast approaching their 21st year
and 4000th gig The Hamsters are one of
the hardest working in rock and therefore
can put on a truly brilliant show plus with
the Tower’s new PA and lighting system
there’s never been a better time to see this
band in Winchester.
Tickets for The Hamsters are available
now from the Tower on 01962 867986
or from the Tower’s website
Good news for all would be musicians,
sound engineers, lighting engineers,
stage managers, event promoters!
The Tower at Kings’ is working in partnership
with Winchester City Council and the Hampshire
County Council Youth Team on a brand new
music project for young people aged 13 plus.
The project will be based at the Tower and we
are currently working with groups of young
people to decide what we do and when.
In a band
We will be offering performance space for young
bands at events that will be organised and
staffed by the young people in our management
group: we’re currently on the lookout for bands
to play the events. Find out more by emailing
info@towerarts.co.uk or call 01962 867986 or
come down on a Tuesday night between 6.00pm
and 8.30pm.
Looking for qualifications or would like
to work in the music industry
We are offering the chance to learn from the
professionals. Every Tuesday there will be
opportunities to sign up to workshops and
courses that can lead to real qualifications in Live
Sound, Lighting, Stage Management and even
computing skills such as Photoshop and website
design. Taught by a professional technician, these
courses will be an amazing insight into a working
venue and very useful to those who might be
looking to work in the industry or in a band and
want to find out more about the role of the
technician. Find out more by emailing
info@towerarts.co.uk or call 01962 867986 or
come down to the Tower any Tuesday between
6.0pm and 8:30pm.
Looking for somewhere to hang out and
talk music
As well as all the other things we are offering on
a Tuesday, it’s also the place to come and meet
like minded music fans and discuss all things
music. Maybe you play an instrument and are
looking to start or join a band Maybe you just
like music. Every Tuesday at the Tower from
6.00pm - 8.30pm it’s free to come down and
hang out.
Tuesday events are staffed by the Tower’s staff
and members of the Hampshire County Council
Winchester Youth Team.
Summer Schools.
As many of you will be aware, the Tower
launched an ambitious summer of activities for
kids this year and I’m pleased to report it was a
success. Many of the ongoing activities for young
people that we run at the Tower were joined by
new workshops to make a varied and interesting
summer of fun! The workshops ran from
10.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday for 4 whole
weeks of the summer holidays and we were
offering a breakfast club from 8.00am and a
DVD club from 4.00pm - 6.00pm. It was just
great to see so many young people with a real
mix of ages at the activities and clubs having a
really good time.
We were really lucky to have Winnall Rock School
take over the Tower for a whole week and rock
the building. Thanks have to go to Winnall Rock
School’s staff and Winchester City Council and
Hampshire County Council as we were fully
subscribed for this particular week and the
experienced staff gave a great week of (very
loud) fun. Winnall Rock School is based in
Winnall Primary School and provides free
instrument tuition to young people from
Winchester. This is the second time they have
come to the Tower and we’re working on
building on this success. We hope to be able to
provide more spaces next time round, apologies
to those who wanted to come to the summer
school but couldn’t - we only have a limited
amount of space, staff and equipment: we’ll try
and fit you in next time.
Another highlight for me was the Tower’s
Performing Arts School who put on a great
performance of a play they had mastered in a
week. Many thanks to Clare and the team for all
their hard work. Our Performing Arts School
meets at the Tower every Saturday and is for
ages 6-17. It’s about learning and practising skills
in Drama, Singing and Dance in a fun
environment and this term has been really
popular since the summer schools. We are taking
enrolments for January now and we have a
limited number of places, so if you’re looking to
book a place my advice would be to get in touch
with the Tower straight away.
The week of summer schools culminated with a
fantastic performance in the car park. Dave, our
technician, worked brilliantly to prepare a
fantastic show and it was a great opportunity for
those who were able to perform to mums, dads
and families. Special thanks have to go to Jo, the
Tower’s ever faithful duty manager, who even
stepped in during one of the performances to
play the important role of the Princess! Finally
thanks to all the tutors, parents and young
people that made this year such a success.
The Tower’s holiday activities were funded by
More than Schools.
We are working on more holiday activities for
young people and we look forward to more in
the coming years. Keep an eye on the Tower’s
website www.towerarts.co.uk for more details, or
join our mailing list and select activities for young
people to stay informed.
Frank Turner - Local boy comes good.
The Tower was lucky enough last year to have
local lad Frank Turner play to a sold out crowd in
our auditorium. Things have been going great
this year for Frank and he asked the Tower if
there was a bigger venue for him to play in his
hometown. Thankfully, with support from
Winchester City Council, we were able to have
Frank Turner play to a sold out Winchester
Guildhall in October (that’s 850 people!). The
Tower promoted the event and our staff did a
fantastic job of planning and ensuring that this
amazing show for Winchester went brilliantly.
Frank was great and I thoroughly recommend
checking out his songs.
Learn how to use Microsoft software
In January 2010 Kings’ school will be running its second set of Microsoft IT
Academy classes for adult learners. After last year’s successful launch Kings’
school hopes to continue providing the Microsoft certification in Word, Excel
and PowerPoint 2007 to the local community and beyond.
Kings’ Microsoft IT Academy is an accredited centre for the Microsoft Office Specialist
qualifications. The 11 week programme framework provides a consistent instruction and
certification process aimed at accelerating an individual’s entry into the workforce or
advancement of their current career. The course is suitable for beginners through to more
advanced users of the software.
The Microsoft Certified Application specialist (MCAS) course will benefit anyone who uses Microsoft
software as part of their working life or someone that wishes to gain Microsoft certification with a highly
recognised qualification. It validates the IT skills that organisations depend on. By successfully passing the
certification exam candidates will prove they meet recognised standards for Microsoft certification.
Kings’ Supporting
local Alzheimer’s
and Autistic Support
Groups
Kings’ Go Gold
‘Get Set’ for the Olympics 2012
Two teams of pupils have successfully
taken part in the Hampshire Community
Challenge. Our community programme at
Kings’ offers a large number of
opportunities for people in the
Winchester area. We are particularly
proud of our links with ‘Blue Apple’
which is based at the Tower and we
would like to create further
opportunities for individuals and groups
within specialist needs to access our
facilities.
Kings’ has recently established strong links
with local groups supporting individuals who
have Alzheimer’s and autism. A group of Year
9 pupils were keen to further extend these
links and carried out research by speaking to
carers and individuals in order to identify key
areas for development.
Our pupils identified two activities which
would stimulate senses, develop social,
emotional and language skills and ultimately
in a small way enrich the lives of individuals.
Their research indicated that the sometimes
challenging and unpredictable behaviour of
individuals with special needs can mean that
parents or carers find it uncomfortable and
impractical taking them to mainstream
cinemas. ‘Community Challenge’ funding will
allow our pupils to set up a special cinema at
the Tower which would provide an
interactive, multi-sensory environment where
individuals can express their emotions in a
safe, secure and supportive environment.
Our second planned activity will see our
pupils develop an interactive music
programme which will be designed to
stimulate the senses, develop communication
skills and an outlet for individual creativity.
Our pupils are confident that the special
cinema and the music programme will have
an immediate and positive impact on the
individuals concerned. Once established we
would like to extend our programme to reach
other groups or individuals with specialist
needs.
Kings’ has already made a successful bid to involve itself in the
preparation for the Olympic Games in London 2012.
Our plan will see us make use of our skills in the delivery of enterprise
and sport alongside our long standing experiences as a designated school
for the physically disabled.
With a small amount of funding from the government a team of pupils
from KS3 and KS4 will form an ‘Olympic Committee’. Following a period
of consultation with the whole school, the Olympic Committee will
research Olympic sports which might be introduced into school. These
new sports will be available to all pupils and provision will be made so
competitors participate on an equal footing. The focus is very much
centred about the Olympic ideals which will encourage our pupils to
compete together, share experiences and challengers, overcome barriers
and develop some of the values enshrined in the Olympic movement.
The Kings’ Olympic Committee will be responsible for managing the
school based element of this project and subsequently formulate a plan
to extend this project into the local community with a particular focus on
enhancing provision for individuals with disabilities within the Winchester
area.
Kings’ Partnership with
Winchester University
Over 30 of our pupils recently visited Winchester University to take part
in a ‘Business Game’ developed and delivered by the Chartered
Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA). The game involved
students creating and running their own radio station and required
plenty of enthusiasm, motivation and creativity, none of which were in
short supply.
Dr. Pru Marriott, Head of Department for Accounting, Economics and Finance at
Winchester Business School said ‘Events like this provide young people with an
ideal opportunity to develop their understanding of business and finance in a
practical way alongside strengthening their communication, presentation and
teamwork skills’.
Jane Berridge, Enterprise Consultant at Kings’ stated that the day had been a
great success and our pupils had thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a
huge amount about business strategy.
Approximately 185 pupils within Years 7 and 8 at Kings’ are currently engaged
in running some form of business activity. Winchester University has kindly
agreed to supply an undergraduate business mentor for each small business.
This initiative will be a significant step forward with our links in the Higher
Education Sector.

England international footballer, Wayne Bridge, returned to his roots on
Friday 28 September when he and members of his family visited Kings’
School in Winchester.
Wayne, who was a pupil at Kings’ between 1991 and 1996, has kept in touch with
staff and pupils of the school throughout his career, and twice has been guest of
honour at Year 11 Presentation Evening.
On this occasion, Wayne dropped by to see some of his old teachers, but asked to
have a look around the school buildings which have changed considerably since his
time as a pupil, and spent over an hour chatting with children and teachers around
the school campus.
Rob Jeckells, Assistant Headteacher, commented, ‘Wayne is an excellent example to
our pupils of someone who has worked extremely hard to achieve what he has, but
who also conducts himself without a trace of arrogance, and who is loyal to, and
proud of, his roots.’
Little Hope
performed by
THE POINT YOUNG PEOPLE’S THEATRE,
EASTLEIGH
Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to watch a play called ‘Little Hope’ as
part of their PSHEE topic ‘Positive Relationships’.
‘Little Hope’ is an innovative piece of writing that explores the issues of families
and parenting through the stories of five young people aged between 14 and 19.
The writing is based on the experiences of young people in and around Eastleigh.
The pupils also had an opportunity to talk to the actors and participate in a
workshop which explored some of the relationship issues in more detail. The
quality of the acting was excellent and the pupils enjoyed taking part in the
workshops.
Information about the drama company and their performances can be found at
www.thepointeastleigh.co.uk.
Harvest Festival at
Kings’ School
supporting Winchester
Churches Nightshelter
Kings’ School were very pleased to be
able to support the Winchester
Churches Nightshelter as part of their
giving for Harvest Festival. The
manager of the Night Shelter ,
Michelle Price, was invited to Kings’
to give a presentation about the
Nightshelter to all the year groups
and ask for donations of foodstuffs
and other essentials. The pupils
responded really well and the
collection of donations was really
impressive.
The school has received a letter from the
Nightshelter thanking the school and
parents for their support - ‘Thank you
very much indeed for the wonderful
display of Harvest gifts that you produced
for us here at the Winchester Churches
Nightshelter. Could you please pass on
our grateful thanks to all those involved
from the school, and to the parents and
children who so kindly made such a big
effort to help those in need at Harvest
time.’
If anyone would like to continue to
support the Nightshelter or would like
more information about its role then
please visit www.wcns.org .uk.

African/Caribbean
Heritage Project
KINGS’ SCHOOL, ACTON HIGH SCHOOL AND
EALING WINDRUSH CONSORTIUM
Kings’ School are pleased to announce their collaboration with Acton
High School in an exciting new project. Pupils will participate in a variety
of exciting extra-curricular activities such as dance, drama and music
workshops and a Business and Enterprise day all designed to increase
pupils’ understanding of African and Caribbean Heritage,
Initially the project will be driven by a small group of pupils from both schools,
along with their teachers, who will put together an exhibition and performance
aimed at educating their peers and the local community. Performances will take
place at The Tower Arts Centre in July 2010 and will showcase the work
undertaken by both Acton High School and Kings’ pupils. An Oral History DVD
and education pack will also be produced as part of the project.
Preparation for the project:
Members of the project team from Acton High School and The Ealing Windrush
Consortium visit Kings’.
On October 12th, Kings’ School were visited by members of the project team in
preparation for the project. Visitors received a tour of the school, met with Kings’
pupils involved in the project and experienced a cultural tour of Winchester,
culminating in a visit to The Cathedral.
Pupil Comments about their visit to Acton High School
Chloe Earley: “The staff and students at Acton High were very welcoming, especially
those who were taking us round the school...”
Oliver Barnes: “Most of the class went to an Art lesson. We drew a portrait of a
sculpture: they think it is a sculpture of a King or Queen because it had special headwear
on. We were told that we had to consider where the shadowing was on the picture and
where the light shone on the picture. We did this by doing the shading in black pastel and
the light in white pastel. We then blended the colours together so that it looked more
vibrant and colourful.”
Christie Gardner: “Five pupils went to a Drama lesson. We worked on a Grandma and a
little child. We were partnered up with a pupil from Acton and we had to devise a piece
about a Grandmother urging the little boy to go to a temple that she was too scared to
go to as a child.”
Nicola Waggott: “The class we are working with is going to come to Kings’ School in
November. Please give them a big welcome!”
Kings’ School Pupils Visit Acton High School
Account by Chloe Early 8.1.2
On Monday 19th October, a small group of Year 8 pupils were
selected to visit Acton High School for the day. Acton High School
is a Media College and it has recently been refurbished.
The staff and students at Acton High were very welcoming, especially
those involved in the project. When we first entered the school we were
taken to a room where we were given a folder about the school along
with an agenda of the day and a quiz that we could try. The Head, Mrs.
Golding, came in to welcome us. She was very kind and we gave her
some flowers and a card that we had made. The Year 8s that would be
working on the project with us introduced themselves and then took us
to our first lesson: five pupils went to Drama, the rest to Art.
Our Art teacher was Mr. Fullwood. He showed us some models of African
heads, two of which can be seen in the reception of the school. We were
given a picture of the African Head and had to draw it on a piece of
paper. We used a paint palette and were allowed to use any colours we
wanted.
After Art it was time for lunch. I was selected for the Cook and Eat class
where we made spicy rice and chicken. Two Acton students in Year 8
helped with the cooking. Whilst the chicken was cooking, we added
some spice and curry powder. Once our rice and chicken was ready, we
served it up and we tried our dishes! We had put the spices in the
chicken instead of the rice and it was really, very spicy!!!
After lunch, everyone came back to the Food Tech room where we met
some Year 10 pupils involved in a pilot Oral History project, whilst they
were in Year 8 The DVD included the pupils interviewing some of the
African Elders: they discussed some of the difficulties and some good
times. There was also some footage from the time. Overall, I think the
DVD was put together very well and I am glad that I am taking part in
this project.
Afterwards, we were split into groups for a tour of the school by Year 8
pupils: there are some similarities and differences between the two
schools. At three o’clock we all met back together and tried some African
desserts. I especially liked the coconut pastry!
Finally at 315 it was time for us to go home. Acton School is a great
school and I look forward to taking part in the project.

Winchester City Basketball Club
Most students know Mr Kenward as a Science teacher at Kings’
School. A few staff know Mr Kenward as “Crouchy” from staff
football, but many more pupils are aware of his commitment and
passion to his sport of basketball.
Since joining Kings’ School last year, Mr
Kenward has set up a basketball academy
aimed at increasing the provision of
basketball to students in the Winchester
region. With links to the men’s club in
Winchester, the Winchester Warriors
Junior Basketball Programme offers
basketball to all abilities from year 4, right
up to the age of 18 - where they can then
join the 3 successful men’s teams in the
form of the Winchester Warriors, Wasps
and Wizards.
As an after-school activity with Mr
Kenward, basketball is open to year 7, 8
and 9 on a Friday. Wheelchair basketball
also takes place on a Wednesday, allowing
those students with physical disabilities
the chance for an entertaining alternative
to the running game, as the school boasts
4 extra wheelchairs for pupils who attend.
Within the basketball academy there are 3 different age
groups to join:
The ‘Languages Road Show’ visits
our Feeder Primary Schools
Mrs. Parsons and Mrs. Pocock took a group of Year 10 pupils to a
large number of our feeder primary schools where they taught our
four Modern Languages to a variety of year groups in the schools.
We were invited to lunch at John Keble School, Hursley which gave
a welcome respite to this very busy but really worthwhile day.
For several years pupils have entered a Language Challenge
competition at Southampton University which entails designing and
producing an enterprise project with themes such as The Olympics,
an itinerary for a cruise ship docking at Southampton and similar
themes.
Our pupils have visited primary schools on many occasions to help
with the running of language projects or to teach the younger pupils
some language skills.
Future plans:
In conjunction with primary liaison staff, Year 8 will be designing a
placemat with vocabulary and phrases for use in our Primary partner
schools.
School enterprise companies will work on the best ideas to refine
and arrange printing with Eduprint. These will be sold at a small
profit which will be donated to a local charity (to be named).
• ‘Welcome’ put onto a loop on the plasma screen in a full range of
languages taught at Kings’ or spoken by pupils as a first language.
• Link with PE planned for the Summer Term.
• Football matches in target language (French) and basketball in
target language (Spanish).
• To organise immersion teaching lessons in 2009-2010 in BCS
• Plans agreed with B&E for enterprise activity for final competition
to be held at the Tower Arts Centre using local
business/IBM/University students from Southampton to judge in a
‘Dragons’ Den’ type event. Invitations to be in foreign languages and
food to be from target countries.
We are currently in discussions with the Music Department about
organising some activities in school to celebrate ‘La Fête de la
Musique’ on June 21. This is a very significant event throughout
France every year and we would like to produce a ‘smaller’ version of
this within our school community. Offers of help from talented
parents and friends will be most welcome!!
Articles in the school newsletter will be appearing in some of our
target languages this year so keep your dictionaries at hand!
Year 9 Pupils lay Wreath at The Menin Gate
on behalf of the Kings’ School Community
On October 15th 60 Year 9 pupils and 6 teachers spent four days
following in the footsteps of British soldiers who fought in the First
World War in Belgium and France.
From the hotel base in Lille the group was able to explore numerous
battlefield sites, memorials and cemeteries on the Western Front. First of
all one day was spent exploring the Ypres Salient. The pupils visited
Essex Farm Field Dressing Station and Cemetery where John McCrae was
inspired to write the famous poem ‘In Flanders’ Fields’, and also the
location of the grave of one of the youngest casualties – 15 year old
John Strudwick ! This was followed by a tour of the battlefields of
around Ypres including the German cemetery at Langemark and the
largest British Cemetery at Tyne Cot on the battlefield of
Passchaendaele.
In the evening the party witnessed the very moving Last Post Ceremony
at The Menin Gate where the names of 55,000 men are engraved who
have no known grave. Earlier in the day a wreath provided by the KSA
had been laid on behalf of the parents, pupils and staff of the school in
memory of the fallen.
The following day focused on The Somme Battlefield. Places visited are
too many to mention but included: the huge minecrater at La Boiselle;
The Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval; Mametz Wood; The South
African Memorial at Delville Wood and the remains of original trenches
at Beaumont Hamel.
The final day involved a visit to trenches and the Canadian Memorial at
Vimy Ridge, and the largest of all French cemeteries at Notre Dame de
Lorette.
During the visit several pupils were able to visit the graves of relatives -
in some cases the first family members to have done so.
The group returned home tired but safe having experienced a very
thought provoking and emotional few days, but also having gained an
invaluable insight into one of the major historical events of recent times.

Primary Partn
First for Sport
Kings’ has had a long tradition of providing sporting
opportunities for pupils in our Primary Partner Schools.
At the very centre of this initiative is the concept of a sporting
festival.
These provide a great opportunity for primary pupils to come to
Kings’, experience our fantastic facilities, meet pupils from other
schools, play sport and be active. Most festivals are non-competitive
and give pupils an opportunity to experience new and challenging
activities. The emphasis is on participation and fun. The only
competitive festival we host is the cross country event as it feeds
into the national sport pathway with winners going on to represent
at district and county level.
The festivals also enable
our Pupil Sport Leaders
from Kings’ to practise
what they have learnt in
lessons as they organise and
lead several of the festivals.
