Grand East Seven secret habits Want to be successful You don’t need to be the Worshipful Master. You don’t need to be the District Deputy. You don’t need to be the Grand Master. But you do need to develop habits in your daily life that are part of your daily routine. You need self-discipline and perseverance. And you must be committed to making a difference in your life. We’re not talking about Masonry in particular. What we are referring to is applicable in any aspect of your life. That includes your relationship with your family, your colleagues and even those people you have never met. Successful people do things differently from those who are less successful. Here are a few of those “secrets” that are right in front of you. You must get in the habit of doing them without thinking about it. Embrace these habits and you can greatly accelerate your own success. Be loyal. Loyalty to the TEAM contributes to the success of the TEAM. And the TEAM supports your own efforts and work ethic. The TEAM rewards you by its support and, invariably, everybody benefits. Loyalty is about leading by example, providing your team unconditional support and never throwing a TEAM member under the bus. Put others before yourself. Get up every day and ask yourself, “What will I do today to add value to the TEAM” Sometimes it is as simple as offering your assistance with a project. The challenge is overcoming the fear that your TEAM member might accept your offer and say, “Yes, I really need your help—tonight.” You need to be prepared to sacrifice your own goals to support others. Be reflective. Don’t be afraid to think about your actions (both planned and completed), and take note of the impact they had on the TEAM and your colleagues. You will see that you made some good decisions and that you can make improvements for the future. Reflecting on your mistakes helps you to never repeat them. Be obsessively organized. Organization makes your life more functional. You don’t need to buy all the latest recommended apps or have a collection of files and drawers for everything. It does mean that you put your life in order with a calm, wise, positive and strategic perspective. Organization helps keep you from being distracted and reacting impulsively. Assume you don’t know enough. You don’t. Believe me. Any team member understands that training is never complete. If you think you know everything your TEAM will reject you and your know-it-all attitude. Those people who spend time developing their knowledge and skills will provide the momentum for the TEAM’s forward progress. Be detail-oriented. Does the TEAM get it right all the time Of course not. But you and all the members of the TEAM are concerned with working together for the common goal. Ask yourself how you are going to accomplish the work in front of you today. Then review again and adjust to make it a successful TEAM event. Learn how to say “no.” It’s far better to say “no” than say “yes” and produce poor quality work or lose your focus on what matters most. Learning to say “no” when it is in your personal best interest, or in the interest of the TEAM, is an extremely valuable skill. Know your limitations and know the impact of your decisions on the TEAM. Welcome criticism. Learn to listen to and absorb the criticism that you get. Listen to and assess even hateful and negative criticism, and then let it go. But constructive criticism should be evaluated and acted upon. Solicit feedback from your TEAM. Remember to be gracious when receiving feedback. When you are, your co-workers and friends will be more likely to give you their support and ideas in the future. You are probably asking yourself, “How can I ever relax if I have to keep up all these habits” But that’s the beauty of habits. If you enjoy what you do and form good habits, it all becomes second nature.
