THE CENTRE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS AT THE BSN

The Centre For Young Musicians (CYM) at the British School in the Netherlands

was founded at the end of 2007 in order to provide extra support on a Saturday for

children with a special interest in music.

The aim of the CYM is to provide a further opportunity for students aged between

6-18 to develop their musical potential and to rehearse and perform with other

musicians who are at a similar level to themselves.

We provide weekly opportunities for students to gain a deeper understanding of

music as a written language, to develop all round musicianship skills and to work

towards challenging performances as a soloist, ensemble player or as part of a

larger group.

The CYM works with students of all abilities from beginners to advanced and has

gradually developed into a vibrant, warm and inspiring musical centre, attracting

professional musicians and teachers of the highest caliber and students who are

passionate about music.

Classical Music

The CYM has a strong interest in classical music and we encourage our musicians

to develop a knowledge of and respect for instruments and music from the earliest

times to contemporary music. In order to expose our students to a wide variety of

instruments and to enable them to work at their highest level, they frequently

work and perform with visiting musicians from the Conservatoriums in Den Haag

and Rotterdam.

Jazz

The focus of our jazz ensembles is to develop improvisational skills by working

with jazz specialists and performing improvisatory pieces regularly. Our students

also have weekly lessons in jazz theory to increase a knowledge and

understanding of jazz in order to further their progress. Our jazz students also

have opportunities to work with talented young performers from the jazz scene in

The Hague to inspire them and to create performance opportunities at a high level.

Vocal Music

Vocal training is important in the development of an all round musician and

almost all our students start the day by working together on a choral piece. They

concentrate on developing musical memory and working in three and four part

harmony and our senior students will take their first international choral

examination in June.

The students who join the centre to specialize in voice, work on solos, duets and

trios and we often focus on a small scene from a musical or opera. This term we

have focused on solo items and our younger junior vocal group has worked on a

scene from Annie.

Drama

In order to develop confidence in performing on stage, our students also have the

opportunity to work on small drama projects such as poetry, scenes from plays

and readings, which we also use to enhance our concerts. This term our youngest

vocal students have worked on a scene from James and the Giant Peach.

Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music

We encourage our students to participate in the practical Associated Board exams

and offer theory lessons at all grades to support the exam requirements. The

exams are held at the senior school and are particularly useful for students who

are transient as they form a series of motivational stepping stones in musical

progress which can be taken anywhere in the world and can lead to a professional

qualification. A pass at grade six and above can also be used to gain UCAS points

for university entrance.

This term, 20 of our students took an ABRSM theory exam, several participated

in the practical exams and two of our students who have gained distinctions at

Grade 8 are currently working towards the ABRSM Performance Diploma. For

more information please visit www.cfym.nl and www.abrsm.org .
