The Whistlestop Story
In 1954, long before there were senior centers, considerations for
people with disabilities, or specialized transportations for these
groups, a grass roots community group decided to band together
to make sure their elders were not forgotten. They started
the Marin Senior Coordinating Council (aka Whistlestop), a
charitable senior-focused organization with the intention to provide
advice, programming, and administrative services for organizations
working to better the lives of older adults. In 1968,he first volunteer-based
ride service began with one vehicle, a stepping stool to help folks into the
vehicle, and a commitment to help one another. These simple acts of kindness
blossomed through the years and today includes city-based shuttles,
paratransit services for those who aren’t able to use public buses, and a
vibrant active aging center.
Today, Whistlestop provides over 145,000 rides per year and is the largest
nonprofit serving older adults in Marin!
Do Something Good
For Older Adults
The golden years are often tarnished by loneliness and daunting health and
financial challenges. By joining the Hugh Thursten Clarke Society with an outright
gift or through Planned Giving, you ensure that Whistlestop will be able to help older
adults remain independent and active for many years to come. Of course, there are
tax benefits as well, aligned with your method of giving. But the largest benefit is
knowing that you are providing future generations of older adults and people with
disabilities a better quality of life.
The Hugh Thursten Clarke Legacy Society
Hugh Thursten Clarke embodied the Whistlestop
spirit by volunteering here for 20 years and making
a significant bequest. Thus, the Legacy Society
carries his name.
You, too, can do something good for older adults
by making a charitable bequest to Whistlestop. It is
easy to do. Simply contact Whistlestop and we will
explain how it works.
“I came to Whistlestop for the
companionship, serenity, comfort, and
laughter that are available for
all who visit.”
–Hugh Thursten Clarke
Your gift will benefit generations of people who
live long lives and will help make those years the
best they can be.
