Of course, 2009 and DQ aren’t the only new things lately. We would also like to present to you

which herald our first steps into the sphere of the European Union. Besides this, there’s also our

designed Tablet PC system is served to you in 60 or 120 milliliter glasses. While tasting your wine on the one hand,

you can read about the history of the wine, the grape, the region in which the grape is produced, the preparation

process, the price, and the special qualities of the wine, as well as leading oenologists’ views and opinions on the wine.

SAINT TRIFON’S DAY

To honour the patron saint of wine,

Bulgaria has been celebrating St Trifon's

Day on 1 February since Thracian times,

when wine makers used to salute Saint

Trifon with a ritualistic pruning of the

wine ceremony. Nowadays, the same

pruning ceremony takes place on

St. Trifon's Day in vineyard villages

across the country. Women bake bread

and roast chicken in preparation for a

post-pruning feast. The festival involves,

as you would imagine, a lot of eating and

even more drinking. In fact, the lucky man

deemed to have grown the most grapes

that year is crowned King, and he and his

subjects are ordered to get drunk to

ensure a plentiful harvest the following

year. Many people celebrate St. Trifon's

Day as an alternative to St. Valentine's

Day, on 14 February.

harmanlayan bir sergiye ev sahipli¤i yapacak. Paolo Colombo’nun

küratörlü¤ünde yedi ülkeden sekiz ça¤dafl sanatç›y› ve 20. yüzy›l›n

ilk yar›s›ndan iki usta yönetmeni bir araya getiren ‘Gölgeye Övgü’,

eski ve ça¤dafl halk masallar› ile gölge tiyatrosuna odakl›. Hem

yetiflkinlere hem çocuklara hitap eden ‘Gölgeye Övgü’, geleneksel

gölge tiyatrosunun son y›llarda ça¤dafl sanat üstünde yapt›¤› etkiyi

araflt›r›yor. Sergide gölge oyununa ait ender bulunan malzemeler,

filmler, foto¤raflar, metinler, el yazmalar›, animasyon sinemas›n›n

iki büyük ustas›n›n stop-motion filmleri ve erken dönem tasvir

IN THE SHADOWS

‹stanbul Modern hosts an exhibition that blends the contemporary

and the traditional, and can be seen from 23 January all the way

through to 6 May. Curated by Paolo Colombo, the exhibition entitled

‘In Praise of Shadows’ features the works of eight contemporary artists

from seven countries, along with two masterful directors from the first

half of the 20th century, all brought together under the theme of old

and new folk stories and shadow-puppet theater. The exhibition aims to

appeal to both children and adults, and looks at the influence of

traditional shadow-puppet theater on contemporary art in recent years.

The exhibition features 250 artefacts, incluyding all sorts of equipment

and materials used in shadow-puppet theater, including films,

photos, texts, manuscripts, animation cinema and

achievements. Airports around the world seek to provide

not just technological and practical convenience, but now

vye with each other to create iconic, artistic and aesthetic

dimensions of excellence as well. Here are a few of the

most outstanding airports from around the world:

Madrid Barajas Airport, New Terminal Building

Designed by Richard Rogers Partnership, the Madrid Barajas

Airport’s new terminal building won the RIBA Stirling Award in

2006, as well as claiming Wallpaper design magazine’s Best

New Airport Award. The architectural transparence of the new

terminal, which focused on the melding of public and private

space, along with the smart use of space and natural light, won

Richard Rogers the Priztker award in 2007. It’s currently

Europe’s fifth biggest airport, with an annual capacity of

65 million passengers.

Beijing Airport, Terminal 3

The new addition to Beijing Airport was intended for the added

capacity that would be needed for the Olympics, and was

designed by British architect Norman Foster. Terminal three was

completed in four years and took the airport’s passenger

capacity from 27 million annually to 60 million. Now, with the

addition of Terminal 3, Beijing Airport is perhaps the world’s best

equipped airport in terms of catering to passengers’ needs. It’s

well-organized, practical, and has a very smooth and efficient

baggage reclamation system, speedy and direct flight transfers,

and optimum comfort in all levels. Terminal 3 is also huge,

spread out over one million square meters, costing a total of two

billion dollars. Lord Norman Foster melded modern materials like

glass, steel and alluminium with traditional Chinese symbols in

the design of the terminal. The airport features an aerodynamic

raisable roof, a dragon-like shape and traditional Chinese colors.

It is also designed to be relatively eco-friendly, using as much

natural light as possible and bringing tight specifications to

carbon emissions.

Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5

British Airways’s new terminal opened in March. Called T5 for

short, Terminal 5 is an innovative terminal in many respects.

Designed by Richard Rogers Partnership, Terminal 5 has been

designed to be very eco-friendly. ‹t uses and filters rain water

that collects on its roof to provde 80% of the water needs of the

airport. There aren’t any of the usual announcements over

loudspeaker here either, instead all the announcements are

provided visually via special screens. The terminal also allows

passengers to check-in without waiting for their bags to go

through. Spread out over 30,000 square meters, the new

terminal utilizes the height of technological advancement,

including optimum use of natural lighting, as well as exceptional

attention to aesthetic and even artistic detail.

As global warming becomes one of the greatest threats facing civilization, airlines around the world are coming up with

the most innovative ways to utilize the technology and design in a way that their service becomes eco-friendly without

compromising passenger comfort. After all, airplanes are one of the highest contributors to global warming, their

combined emissions accounting for approximately 1.6% of all harmful gases that go toward creating the ‘greenhouse

effect’ in our environment. But new measures are being promoted. For example, the European Union is preparing to

impose a ‘pollution tax’ from 2012 onwards. Airlines are also taking their own precautions. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is

trying to reduce taxiing time on the ground before and after flights, while also making sure its airplanes fly slower when in

the air. That means 5,000 tons of fuel conserved every hour, which of course reduces the emission of carbondioxide into

the atmosphere. British Airways offers passengers the opportunity to know how much the emission rate is in relation to

the cost of the trip, with a chance to donate money to the International Climate Protection Fund. Another option that

airlines have been considering is working on alternative fuels to reduce pollution resulting from their flights.

Virgin Havayollar› has already done this quite successfully. The American airlines Continental has also commissioned

new planes that use less fuel.

Ahu Türkpençe is the rising

She now hits the screen with a brand

new series called “Karamel” (Caramel).

We talked to the young actress about her career

and her plans for the future.

üçüncü s›n›ftayd›m. Ayn› dönem

amatörce pandomim tiyatrosu

yap›yordum. Giderek en mutlu oldu¤um

yerin sahne oldu¤unu fark

ettim. Daha sonra bir pandomim

toplulu¤u onlara kat›lmam› teklif etti

ve ben sahnede daha çok zaman geçirmeye

bafllad›m. Tam da o s›ralarda

bir arkadafl›m MSM’nin konservatuar

bölümüne haz›rlan›yordu, bana da s›nava

girmem için ön ayak oldu. Yetenek s›nav›ndan

bir gün önce kay›t yapt›rd›m, asl›nda

pek de umudum yoktu. Muhtemelen kazanamam

ama sonraki sene çok çal›fl›p tekrar

girerim s›nava diyordum kendi kendime. S›navlar

üç gün sürdü ve ben hiç beklemedi¤im bir flekilde

elemeleri geçtim, okulda okumaya hak kazand›m.

Benim için çok mutlu bir gündü. Tabii ki okulumun

bana katk›s› çok fazla. Sadece oyunculuk ad›na de-

¤il, 'insan olma' ad›na da çok fley ö¤rendim orada. Ö¤renmenin

yafl› yok; hala ö¤renmeye ve bunlar› hayata geçirmeye

çal›fl›yorum. Profesyonel oyunculukla iliflkim tiyatronun

ikinci senesinde bafllad›. Zaten ilk y›l ifl yapmak yasakt›.

‹kinci senemde bir yandan MSM’ye gidiyor bir yandan da 'Güzel

ow did your acting career get started

I was in my third year at Y›ld›z Technical University’s physics department. I was

also doing some amateur pantomime on the side. I realized that I was the happiest

on stage. Then a pantomime company asked me to join them, which led to my spending

more and more time on stage. Around just that time a friend of mine was prepping

for the MSM conservatory department, and that inspired me to give the exam a try

too. I thought I wouldn’t win but would at least gain a little experience and make a

second go at it the following year. The exams lasted three days and to my surprise I

passed. It was a very happy day for me. Of course I owe a lot to my schooling, not

just in terms of becoming an actress but also in how it helped me develop as a human

being. There’s no age to learning; I still try and learn as much as I can. My

professional acting career started in the second year of theater. It’s generally forbidden

to do any professional work in your first year anyway. But in my second year I was

going to MSM while also acting in a series called “Güzel Günler” (Great Days) and a

play called “Dur Bakal›m Nolcak” (Let’s See What Happens).

Let’s talk about what you’re doing now: first a film then a new TV series...

are there any other projects going on

Not for now, but we’ll be filming a new movie for the summer.

What kind of experience was it for you to act in the film “Dinle

Neyden”

The protagonist of the film is actually the philosophy and teachings of

the famous Sufi poet and philosopher, Mevlana Jellaleddin Rumi.

That’s why it’s a very “naive” film. We all tried to bring this philosophy

to the fore in our filming, our team interaction and in the

development of the story. I think that it was a well-executed

What do you give importance to when you’re considering acting

in a TV series

The screenplay, obviously. If I like the story and the role set out for

me is exciting and interesting, then I’ll take the part. Of course, the

director and the other actors are also important. Sometimes you

accept jobs just to work with a certain director or certain actors. I’m

very lucky because for me all three factors came hand in hand. I loved

the stories, the directors were excellent, and I got the chance to work

with great actors.

You took a year off between TV series. Are you afraid that your

popularity will wain if you take such long sabbaticals

No, not at all. The reason I didn’t act in a TV series for one and a

half years was that I was trying to pick the jobs that suited me. In

other words, I was being selective. As you know, TV series last about

one or two years if they become popular. When you work this long on

a single project, it’s only natural that I expect a great director and a

great cast of actors whom I’d be happy to work with for an extended

period of time. But if I wanted to act in series just to earn money,

then I’d probably be miserable. That’s why I waited so long after I

finished “fiöhret” – I basically waited until a great project like

“Karamel” came along. That’s why I feel good about it. We’ll see if

people like the new series, but whatever the result, the new series will

always be special for me.

Your new series “Karamel” was adapted from a movie, and you

were the one to get the ball rolling on the project. Will you tell us

a little about the story

I was amazed at the warmth and sincerity of the film, and that’s why

I suggested it as a starting point for the producers. In the film there

were multiple meeting points and more than one women who were

hairdressers, and they all had separate stories. The stories were very

realistic and fun. Our producer liked it too, so the writing team got

together and wrote a screenplay. Of course, there are a lot of differences

between the film and the series. For example, our writer didn’t just

limit the stories and characters to hairdressers but decided to spread

them out to embrace a whole neighborhood spectrum. That way you

could tell not just women’s stories but also men’s. There were also

different love relationships which weren’t in the film. At the end of

it all, there’s a TV series which is independent of the film, even

though it’s been inspired by it. But the series, like the film, gives that

same feeling of warmth and sincerity.

Can you tell us a little about the Zehra character on “Karamel”

Zehra has a lot of shortcomings and weaknesses like everyone else, but

she’s also very well-meaning and is trying to find the right path for

herself in life. Like us, she’s someone trying to be the best she can be

and lead the best life she can lead. There’s a lot of loneliness inside

Hay›r olmuyor. 1,5 y›ld›r dizi çekmememin sebebi, do¤ru ifl seçmeye

çal›flt›¤›mdand›. Bildi¤iniz gibi genelde diziler e¤er seyirci

severse bir ya da iki y›l sürüyor. Bu kadar uzun bir süre çal›flmak

söz konusu olunca da içinde bulunmaktan gurur duyaca¤›m bir

ekip, oynamas› e¤lenceli bir hikaye ve iyi bir yönetmen istemek

en mant›kl›s›. Aksi takdirde sadece para kazanmak için bir dizide

oyunculuk yapmak beni mutsuz eder, zaten yapmam da. fiöhret

dizisinden sonra bu kadar beklememin sebebi de buydu; Karamel'deki

gibi güzel bir ekip ve samimi bir hikaye gelene kadar

bekledim. O yüzden de içim çok rahat. Karamel’i seyircinin sevip

sevmeyece¤ini zaman gösterecek. Ama sonuç ne olursa olsun

benim için Karamel dizisi hep çok özel olacak.

Yeni diziniz Karamel bir filmden uyarland› ve ilk k›v›lc›m› yakan

siz oldunuz. Projenin hikayesini biraz anlat›r m›s›n›z

Ben filmin dokusuna, s›cakl›¤›na ve samimiyetine hayran kalm›flt›m,

bu yüzden yap›mc›ya ç›k›fl noktas› olarak bu filmi önermifltim.

Filmde bir flekilde buluflma mekanlar› kuaför olan birden

fazla kad›n ve onlar›n ayr› ayr› hikayeleri vard›. Hikayeler çok

gerçek ve bir o kadar da e¤lenceliydi. Yap›mc›m›z›n da akl›na yatt›,

senaryo grubunu toplay›p çal›flmaya bafllad›lar. Dedi¤im gibi

ç›k›fl noktam›z bu oldu, ama tabi ki filmle dizi aras›nda büyük

farklar var, mesela yazarlar›m›z özellikle kuaförle s›n›rl› kalmay›p

hikayeleri mahalleye yaymay› tercih etti. Böylece sadece kad›nlar›n

Karamel’in Zehra’s›ndan biraz bahseder misiniz

Zehra da herkes gibi, zaaflar› ve hatalar› olan, ama bir o kadar da

iyi niyetli ve do¤ruyu bulmaya çal›flan, ayn› bizim gibi hayata tutunmak

için mücadele eden bir kad›n. ‹çinde koca bir yaln›zl›k tafl›yan

ama yine de umutlu ve etrafa nefle saçan, biraz cilveli, bolca

gözü kara, sözünü sak›nmayan bir karakter.

Üç baflrolünüzde üç bambaflka karakter canland›r›yorsunuz.

Bir adaptasyon sorunu yafl›yor musunuz

Her seferinde farkl› bir karakter canland›rmak tüm oyuncular›n

ortak arzusudur. Ama ne yaz›k ki her zaman farkl› alternatifler

olmayabiliyor. Bence bu yüzden birbirine yak›n roller icra etmek

zorunda kal›yor birçok oyuncu. Bana gelince ben elimden

geldi¤ince flartlar›m› zorlamaya, gerekirse beklemeye çal›fl›yorum.

Yine de flöyle bir güzelli¤i var mesle¤imizin, her ne kadar

birbirine yak›n bile dursa roller, onu farkl› oynamak oyuncunun

elinde. Tabii yönetmenin izni dahilinde. Bu yüzden kendimi

flansl› görüyorum ve hay›r adaptasyon sorunu yaflam›yorum.

Hem oyuncuya hissettirdi¤i duygu anlam›nda hem de çal›flma

flekli anlam›nda üçü de birbirinden çok farkl›. Ama sinema bana

daha büyülü geliyor. ‹stersem saniyesinde kaybolabilece¤im ya da

uçabilece¤im ya da Matrix misali tek bir hareketle bana do¤ru gelen

kurflunu tutabilece¤im için san›r›m. Bu yüzden s›ralama yapmam

gerekse sinema, tiyatro ve televizyon derim.

Beyazperdede özel olarak çal›flmak istedi¤iniz bir yönetmen

var m›

O kadar çoklar ki hangisini söyleyeyim Ferzan Özpetek, Reha

Erdem, Serdar Akar, Selim Demirdelen, Yüksel Aksu, Cemal

fian, Dervifl Zaim, Ümit Ünal, Ezel Akay, Ça¤an Irmak… Böyle

saymakla bitmiyorlar. O kadar flansl›y›z ki giderek daha iyi sinemac›lar

Bence mutlaka yurt d›fl›na gidip oyun seyretmek, workshoplara

kat›lmak, bol bol meslekle ilgili kitap okumak, yeni teknikler

ö¤renmek ve denemek gerek. Ben zaman buldukça bunlar› yapmaya

çal›fl›yorum. Sürekli ö¤renmek ve denemekten yanay›m.

‹klimi s›cak olan her yere gidebilirim. Karadeniz turu yapmak

her, but she never gives up on trying to spread joy and hope to those

around her. She’s a little flirtatious, very courageous and also very

candid.

You played three totally different characters in all three of your

series. Do you have trouble adapting to new roles

To be able to play different characters every time is the common desire

of all actors. But unfortunately you don’t always get all those

alternatives. That’s why a lot of actors end up getting typecast, having

to play the same or very similar kinds of characters. As for me, I

try and push my luck and wait till I can land a role that I like and

which will be challenging for me. One advantage in this line of work

is also that even if you do always land the same kinds of roles, you

can always act them out differently and make stylistic variations – of

course, as long as the director agrees. That’s why I find myself to be

lucky, and no, I don’t have an adaptation problems.

Is there a TV series that you watch regularly

“Avrupa Yakas›” (The European Side) and “Yaprak Dökümü”

(Windfall).

People always ask actors to list ttheir preferences among theater,

film and TV. What are your preferences

All three are very different, both in terms of what they make you feel

as an actor and in terms of how you work on each one. But to me

cinema seems the most magical. I feel like it’s a fantasy world where

everything’s possible, where, like in the Matrix, if a bullet were to be

shot at my face I could snatch it in the air. So, if I were to list them

in order of preferance, I’d say cinema, theater and then TV.

Is there a director you’d like to work with especially on the big

screen

There are so many: Ferzan Özpetek, Reha Erdem, Serdar Akar, Selim

Demirdelen, Yüksel Aksu, Cemal fian, Dervifl Zaim, Ümit Ünal, Ezel

Akay, Ça¤an Irmak… We’re so lucky, so many new great directors

are making films now, and so there are a lot more directors that we

actors would love to work with. The best part about it is that all those

names I listed have their own style, and that’s why it would be very

important for me to work with each and every one of them.

Do you still work hard at trying to develop your acting What do

you do

I think it’s crucial to go overseas and watch theater there, join

workshops, read lots of books on the industry, learn new techniques

and always keep practicing. I try to do all these things when I have

the time. I’m for always learning and always trying my best.

Do you like to travel Where would you like to go, in Turkey or

abroad

Any place with a warm climate. I’d love to do a tour of the Black Sea

region of Turkey. I’d also love to live in Italy.

Damascus is the capital city of our southeastern neighbor Syria, and is considered

the oldest inhabited city in the world. It’s one of the most modern,

populous and beloved of Arab cities. But when we say ‘modern’, we mean it

in a different sense, for although the city may not have the sophisticated

amenities and conveniences of your average modern Western city, it’s definitely

making up for lost time. The streets of Damascus are more open and

vibrant than ever. There’s new cafes, restaurants, shopping centers, all of

which point to a city that is on its way to finding a new sense of confidence

and pride in both its past and its future.

Believed to have been first established around six to seven thousand years

ago, Damascus is one of the oldest inhabited city’s on earth. Many civilizations

and empires have passed through the city, including Hittites,

Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and of course the Arabs, who –

Syrian Beauty

under the Umayyad Dynasty – made Damascus the capital of the Arab

Islamic Empire. Naturally it’s no wonder that you find a fantastic mix

of Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Ottoman architecture in the city.

Although Damascus suffered terribly under the Mongol onslught that

devastated a lot of its architectural riches, the city regained its pride of

place as a great city after the Ottoman conquest of 1516 under Selim II,

becoming the capital of the Ottoman province of Damascus (Sam) for the

next four centuries, until 1918, when the city was occupied by the victorious

British and Allied forces who defeated the Ottomans in World War

I. The independence of Damascus and Syria was short lived, however,

and the French assumed control of the city in 1920. They ruled over

their Syrian mandate until 1946, when after a revolt against French

rule, Syrian independence was finally won with Damascus as the capital.

Damascus has changed greatly since 2000, and is comprised of an ‘old

city’ and a new one, with the Bab Sharqi and Bab Tuma areas making

up the ancient heart of the city, and being notable for narrow streets,

historical buildings and traditional wooden houses. To the north of

Damascus is the Wadi Barada area, which – as the name suggests – is

situated in a valley. This area is Damascus’ new center of attraction

where chic and stylish Syrians cruise around in their luxury cars and frequent

the many cafes and restaurants. But don’t let the razzle and dazzle

fool you, because prices are very reasonable. Another area is Al

Muhajireen, where the Kasyon peak overlooks the city, offering a spectacular

panoramic view of Damascus.

Emeviye Camii

fiam Kalesi'nin yan›nda yükselen flehrin en eski ve en

görkemli camisi, Roma döneminde Jüpiter Tap›na¤› imifl. Daha

sonra kilise olarak kullan›lan yap›, fiam'›n Müslümanlar taraf›ndan

fethedilmesinden sonra, 705 y›l›nda Emevi Halifesi Velid bin

Abdülmelik taraf›ndan camiye çevrilmifl. Al›fl›lm›fl›n d›fl›nda

dikdörtgen plan üzerine infla edilen, mozikleri ve sülemeleriyle

süslü camide dört farkl› mezhebi temsil eden dört ayr› mihrab var.

Ezan› da dört ayr› imam okuyor. Avludaki sekiz sütun üzerinde

yükselen kubbe hazineyi korumak amac›yla, Abbasîler döneminde

yap›lm›fl. Hz. Yahya’n›n kabri üzerine yap›lan türbesi ile cami,

Hristiyanlar için de ziyarete de¤er. K›yamet yaklaflt›¤›nda Hz.‹sa'n›n

yeryüzüne inece¤i rivayet edilen beyaz minare de burada.

Umayyad Mosque

Situated next to Damascus Castle, the Umayyad Mosque is the

city’s oldest and most spectacular mosque. The mosque was

founded on a Roman-era temple to Jupiter which later became

a church, and eventually a mosque after the city was conquered

by the Arabs under the rule of the Umayyad Caliph Waleed bin

Abdulmalik in 705. The mosque was constructed in an unusual

rectangular form, and features splendid mosaics throughout,

along with four different ‘mihrab’s which represent the four main

Islamic sects. The ezan is read out by four separate imams,

The dome that was built upon the eight columns in the central

court was built in the Abbasid period and was meant to house

the treasury. The mosque also has the legenadary ‘white

minaret’ which according to religious lore is the place where

Christ will reappear in the time of the Apocalypse.

Yaklafl›k bir kilometre uzunlu¤undaki çarfl›, hem tarihin içinde

Hicaz Tren ‹stasyonu

fiam, Osmanl› ‹mparatorlu¤u’nun son büyük projesi Hicaz

Demiryolu’nun duraklar›ndan biriydi. ‹kinci Abdülhamid

döneminde temelleri at›lan proje, Ba¤dat Demiryolu ile birleflerek,

‹stanbul’u fiam üzerinden Mekke ve Medine’ye ba¤layacakt›.

Salahaddin Ayyubi (Saladin) Shrine

An Ottoman shrine built over the graves of famous sufi mystic

Muhiddîn-i Arabî and the founder of the Umayyad Dynasty, the

famous Salahaddin Ayyubi (Saladin). Situated next to the

Umayyad Mosque.

Hamidiye Bazaar

Constructed in 1863 under the reign of Ottoman Sultan

Abdulhamid, the Hamidiye Bazaar is reminiscent of the Grand

Bazaar in Istanbul. The one kilometer long bazaar is a pleasure

not just in terms of sightseeing, but also shopping. There’s a

wide assortment of silk and other materials, including famed

Damascus hand-woven textiles and all sorts of clothes and

other goods. It’s the perfect place to shop for gifts, and perhaps

the most vibrant and colorful part of the city.

Hejaz Train Station

Damascus was one of the main stops along the Hejaz

Railway that was built in the time of the Ottomans and stretched

all the way down to the Hejaz cities of Mecca and Medina.

No visit to Damascus is complete without a visit to

Damascus’ Hejaz train station, which also features a museum

of old locomotives.

Süleymaniye Külliyesi

1554 y›l›nda Kanuni Sultan Süleyman taraf›ndan Mimar Sinan'a

yapt›r›lan Süleymaniye Külliyesi, Osmanl› mimarisinin en güzel

örneklerinden biri. 1566 y›l›nda eklenen Süleymaniye Medresesi

ile son halini alan külliyenin avlusunda bir Askeri Müze bulunuyor.

Ayr›ca ‹talya’da hayat›n› kaybeden son Osmanl› padiflah› Sultan

Vahdettin'in mezar› da Süleymaniye Külliyesi’nde yer al›yor. Son

dönem Osmanl› padiflahlar›n›n torunlar›ndan baz›lar›n›n

mezarlar›n›n da içerisinde bulundu¤u küçük mezarl›k, Türk

ziyaretçilere özel ziyarete aç›l›yor.

Esat Pafla Saray›

Osmanl› ‹mparatorlu¤u’nun son fiam Valisi Esat Pafla taraf›ndan

1749'da yapt›r›lan saray, kesme tafltan yap›lm›fl, dört ana sütun

üzerinde dokuz kubbeli etkileyici bir mimari eser.

F›sk›yeli, havuzlu avlunun etraf›n› çevreleyen saray hücreleri

bugün, dönemin yaflant›s›na ›fl›k tutan bir müze olarak kullan›l›yor.

Souleymaniye Mosque & Madrassa

Commissioned to be built by Ottoman Sultan Suleyman the

Magnificent, the Souleymaniye Mosque was finished in 1554,

and was constructed and designed by none other than the

great Ottoman architect Sinan (Mimar Sinan). The madrassa was

added on in 1566, and the complex also has a military museum,

as well as a shrine for the last Ottoman Sultan Vahdettin,

and a cemetary that includes the graves of various descendents

of the Ottoman dynasty.

Assad Pasha Palace

Built in 1749 by the Ottoman Governor of Damascus Assad

Pasha, this palace was built with cut stone and features nine

domes built upon four main columns, making it one of the most

extraordinary of the buildings of Damascus. The various chambers

surrounding the fountained pool in the center of the courtyard

now serve as a museum.

• The weekend for Muslims is Friday, for Christians Sunday. Public offices, banks

and some stores are closed on Fridays.

• The best way to get around in the city is by taxi cab. It’s very cheap, but the only

drawback is the terrible traffic in Damascus, so it might be best to walk when in

the congested city center.

• Syrian cuisine is very similar to Turkish, which means you won’t have too much

trouble ordering food if you’re acquainted with Turkish menus. They’re famous

for their kebabs, of course.

Cut the avocado in half, grate

200 gram goose liver

50 gram potatoes

10 gram carrots

1 medium sized dry onion

1 gram salt

2 gram cream

1 gram white pepper

2 sheets gelatin

5 gram raspberry

50 gram marzipan dough

Sautee the goose liver with the

potatoes, carrots and the onion.

Add a little water and boil for

10 minutes. Once it’s cooked, bring

it to a puree consistency with a

blender. Add salt, white pepper,

cream and pre-melted gelatin to

the pate. Serve with boiled fennel

and raspberry sauce.

Beat the eggs, sugar, cocoa, vanilla

and praline. Add the gelatin. This

mixture is spread over the sides of the

cone-shaped molds. They’re filled with

the chestnut puree. After being frozen

in the fridge, they are served with the

raspberry jelly and the pineapple.

Beat the eggs and sugar until they rise.

Add the pistachio nuts and the

corn starch. Pour the mixture on to a

tray. Cook in an oven at 170 degrees

celcius. Cut with a circular mold or

bowl rim. Squeeze cream between two

circular layers. Sprinkle the crumbs

from the tray on top and serve.

Beat the cream and sugar. Add the

cocoa, cooking chocolate, vanilla and

the milk. Pour into cooking molds.

Mix the eggs, sugar and gelatin

before squeezing into the mix. Freeze

in a deep freezer before serving.

Sultânü'l-Ulemâ 1231’de vefat edince

türbedeki bugünkü yerine defnedilmifl.

17 Aral›k 1273 y›l›nda Mevlana’n›n vefat› ve

defni sonras›, mezarlar›n üzerine “Kubbe-i

Hadra” (Yeflil Türbe) yap›lm›fl. Türbe, 1926

y›l›ndan bu yana müze olarak hizmet veriyor.

Alaaddin Camii

Anadolu Selçuklu döneminde yap›lan Alaaddin

Camii, Konya’n›n en büyük ve en eski camisi.

Yap›m› yüz y›ldan fazla süren caminin

tamamlanmas› Alaaddin Keykubat dönemine

denk geliyor. Bu yüzden mimaride farkl›

dönemlerin etkilerini görmek mümkün.

Alaaddin Tepesi üzerindeki caminin en ilgin

yan› abanoz a¤ac›ndan yap›lma minberi.

Ahflap ifllemecili¤inin kusursuzlu¤u son derece

etkileyici. Kap›lardaki ve kemerlerdeki ince tafl

iflçili¤i, yine Selçuklu sanat›n›n yans›mas›.

1155 y›l›nda Ahlatl› Mengum Berti taraf›ndan

yap›lan çinilerle süslü mihrap, zamana biraz

boyun e¤se de güzelli¤ini kaybetmemifl.

Mevlana Museum

This museum is dedicated to the memory and

legacy of the famous sufi philosopher/poet

Mevlana Jelalleddin Rumi. It was originally a

Rose Garden in the Seljuk Palace but was

later given as a gift by Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin

Keykubad to Mevlana’s father,

Sultânü'l-Ulemâ Bâhaeddin Veled – who was

buried there following his death in 1231. After

Mevlana died in 1273, he was also buried

there and the famed Green Dome was

constructed over his grave as a shrine in

commemmoration to him. The shrine has

been a museum since 1926. It contains the

‘Dervish Cells’ in the north and western side of

the museum, along with the shrines to Sinan

Pasha, Fatma Hatun and Hasan Pasha on the

eastern side, along with the ‘semahane’, the

masjid, and the building which contains the

shrines of members of the Mevlana family.

Alaaddin Mosque

Built in the time of the Anatolian Seljuk Empire,

the Alaaddin Camii is Konya’s biggest and

oldest mosque. The mosque was finished in

the time of Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat and

carries the traits of different architectural

styles. The wood work and ceramics (made

by Ahlatl› Mengum Berti in 1155) in the

mosque are exceptional, as is the fine stone

masonry around the gates of the mosque.

Konya’ya sekiz kilometre uzakl›ktaki antik bir

Rum köyü olan Sille’de M.S. 327’de yap›lan

Aya Elena Kilisesi, Anadolu’daki ilk kiliseler

aras›nda. Bizans imparatoru Constantin'in

annesi Helena taraf›ndan yapt›r›lan kilisenin

duvarlar›ndaki Hz. ‹sa, Meryem Ana ve

havarileri resmeden renkli figürler ve vaaz

kürsüsü görmeye de¤er.

Meke Krater Gölü

Karap›nar ilçesindeki Meke Krater Gölü, çift

volkan patlamas› ile oluflmufl do¤al bir güzellik.

‹lk volkan patlamas›n›n ard›ndan krater sularla

dolarak göle dönüflmüfl, 9000 y›l önce ikinci

bir patlamayla gölün ortas›nda ikinci volkan

konisi oluflmufl. Ortas›ndaki adac›klarla enfes

bir manzara sunuyor göl. Bölgede Ac›göl,

Ç›rak Göl ve Meyil Gölü gibi baflka krater

gölleri de var.

Çatalhöyük

Geçmifli M.Ö. 7500 y›llar›na dayanan

Çatalhöyük, dünyan›n bilinen ilk arkeolojik

yerleflimlerinden. Cilal› Tafl ve Bak›r devirlerine

›fl›k tutan Çatalhöyük, 1958 y›l›nda James

Mellaart taraf›ndan keflfedilmifl. Kaz›lar, Ian

Hodder yönetiminde 2017 y›l›na kadar devam

edecek. Konya’ya gitmiflken flehrin

yan›bafl›ndaki bu zaman tünelini ziyaret

etmeden olmaz. Çanak-çömlekçili¤in, bak›r ve

tekstil iflçili¤inin ilk örnekleri, dünyan›n ilk

tap›na¤›, ilk manzara resmi burada. Uygarl›k

tarihine az da olsa merak› olan herkes

Çatalhöyük’ü görmeli.

Haghia Elena Church

Situated in Sille – an old Greek village eight

kilometers outside of Konya – Haghia Elena

Church was built in 327 A.D. and it’s one of

the oldest churches in Anatolia. The church

was commissioned by Emperor Constantine’s

mother Helena and features vivid icons

depicting Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the

12 apostles.

Meke Crater Lake

Situated in the Karap›nar district, the Meke

crater lake (Meke Krater Gölü) was formed as

a result of a double volcanic eruption, the

second of which happened 9000 years ago,

creating the second conical formation in the

lake. The lake offers some breathtaking

scenery, and the area features other crater

lakes like Ac›göl, Ç›rak Göl and Meyil Gölü.

Chatalhoyuk (Çatalhöyük)

This is the oldest known human settlement,

dating back to 7500 B.C. This priceless

archeological site was discovered by James

Mellaart in 1958, and it gives us a fascinating

glimpse into the neolithic and Bronze ages of

human history. There’s still excavation work

going on in the area, expected to continue

until 2017 under archeologist Ian Hodder. It’s

fascinating to see where history effectively

begins.

Kilistra Antik Kenti

Konya’n›n 55 kilometre güneybat›s›nda, ünlü

kiliselere, flaraphanelere, çeflmelere de rastlan›yor.

Karatay Medresesi

Selçuklu veziri Celaleddin Karatay taraf›ndan

1251 y›l›nda yapt›r›lan medrese, çinileriyle ünlü.

19. yüzy›l sonlar›nda terk edilen medrese,

1955’den bu yana Çini Eserleri Müzesi olarak

ziyarete aç›k. Müzede Selçuklu ve Osmanl›

dönemlerine ait çini eserler sergileniyor. Tek

katl› yap›, turkuaz çinili kubbesi ile ortaça¤ Türk

sanat›n›n baflyap›tlar›ndan. Yaz› ve desenlerle

süslü, beyaz mermerden kap›s› ise tafl iflçili¤i

flaheseri.

‹nce Minareli Medrese

‹nce Minareli Medrese, 1264 y›l›nda Selçuklu

veziri Sahip Ata Fahrettin Ali taraf›ndan hadis

ilmi ö¤retilmek üzere yapt›r›lm›fl. 1956 y›l›nda

Tafl ve Ahflap Eserler Müzesi olarak ziyarete

aç›lan medresede Selçuklu ve Karamano¤ullar›

dönemine ait kitabeler, mezar tafllar› ve

bezemeli mimari parçalar, kap› ve pencere

kanatlar›, 19. yüzy›lda y›k›lm›fl Konya

Kalesi’nden kalma kabartma rölyefler ve ahflap

eserler sergileniyor. Sergilenen eserler kadar

an›tsal yap›n›n kendi güzelli¤i de dikkat çekici.

Cilistra (Ancient City)

Situated 55 kilometers to the southwest of

Konya, Cilistra is located along the old Royal

Road. The ancient city was first established in

the Hellenistic period, and there are monuments

that have also been built in Christian

times, so that it’s possible to see rock-carved

dwellings alongside churches, chapels and

fountains.

Karatay Madrassa

Commissioned by Seljuk Vezir Celaleddin

Karatay and completed in 1251, the Karatay

Madrassa is famous for its tiles and ceramics.

Although the madrassa was abandoned in the

19th century it was since restored and

reopened as a ceramics museum in 1955.

Today it is one of the country’s best museums

in terms of Seljuk and Ottoman era ceramics.

Ince Minareli Madrassa

Literally the ‘Madrassa of the Thin Minaret’ the

‹nce Minareli Madrassa was built in 1264. It

was later converted into the Stone and

Woodwork Museum (Tafl ve Ahflap Eserler

Müzesi) in 1956, and it houses excellent artefacts

from the Seljuk and Karaman dynasty

period, including books, gravestones, reliefs,

and more.

Türkiye'nin en önemli k›fl turizmi merkezlerinden biri olan Palandöken’de, 1994

y›l›ndan bu yana misafirlerini a¤›rlayan Dedeman Palandöken, yenilenen yüzüyle

1 Aral›k 2008 tarihinden itibaren k›fl sezonuna merhaba diyecek. Bölgedeki k›fl

turizmi potansiyeli do¤rultusunda yenilenen Dedeman Palandöken birçok yenilik ile

Dedeman Palandoken, located in one of Turkey’s most

important winter tourist locations, Palandoken, has undergone

a transformation and will be open for service starting 1 December

2008. The Dedeman Paladoken has been providing unparalleled

service to its guests since 1994; the renovations reflect the

tourism potential of the area. The Dedeman consists of 183

standard rooms and 1 suite room, all decorated in a minimalist

style, with the most modern of technologies provided as well.

While the hotel’s main restaurant was undergoing renovations,

the menu, which consists of Turkish and world flavours, was also

completely renewed. Dedeman Palandoken is looking forward to hosting

gittik, dedi. Aç›k m› yazl›k mekanlar› hala yoksa

dedim. Yok be aptal, olur mu, dona dona denize

girdik. Orada köpekler vard›, onlar› sevdik. O da

köpek delisi anlayaca¤›n, dedi. Emin misin, dedim.

Befl y›l sonra ne olaca¤›n› bilmem ama-derken,

dedim ki, aptal, befl y›l sonra ne olaca¤›n› kimse

bilemez- flimdi emin misin O adama bak›p, bu

benim hayat›m› birlikte geçirmek istedi¤im adam,

diyor musun Diyorum! dedi. Benim küçük

kardeflim. Evleniyor, diye sevinç gözyafllar› döktürdü

bana, telefonun ucundan. Kald›klar› otele hemen

Kald›¤›m›z oteli hat›rl›yorum. Beflinci evlilik

y›ldönümümüz için geçen y›l ayn› oteldeki ayn›

oday› tekrar tutmaya yeltendim, sonra ‹stanbul

d›fl›na ç›kt›k olmad›. Telefonda resepsiyoniste

diyorum ki; soka¤a bak›yor; asansörün gerisinde.

Odalar›m›z›n yar›s› böyle han›mefendi oda numaras›-

n› hat›rl›yor musunuz Hat›rlam›yorum. Ama

üçüncü katta olabilir. Yoksa dördüncü katta m›yd›

Asansörü çok iyi hat›rl›yorum çünkü ben odadan

ç›km›flt›m. Otellere has o yabanc› ama tan›d›k,

temiz, bana hep huzur veren koku... Koridorda

yürüyordum. Arkamdan bakt›¤›n› biliyordum.

Arkama döndüm; bak›yordun. Sa¤ kolunu kap›n›n

pervaz›na yaslam›fl, sol aya¤›n bir parça önde, güzel

mavi gözlerinle, bir gece önce onlar› ilk defa

gördü¤ümde afl›k oldu¤um o çapk›n hallerinde,

bak›yordun. Her fleyin film gibi oldu¤unun

bilincinde, arkama dönüflümün de sanki mesela

Greta Garbo’dan rol çalmak gibi, gülebildi¤im en

güzel flekilde gülmeye çal›flt›m. Sadece gülsem

daha güzeldi büyük ihtimal ama kendimi sana

be¤endirmek derdindeydim, gülüflüme mümkün

oldu¤u kadar do¤al bir hava vermeye çal›flarak

çal›fl›lm›fl bir flekilde güldüm, bak›flt›k. O günden

sonra hiç ayr›lmad›k.

Çal›flt›¤›m o güney kentine gelirdin. Sahili b›rak›p

da¤lara ç›kard›k. Saatlerce yürürdük. Konuflurduk.

Ne çok konuflurduk! Her fleyi konuflurduk. Kedi

köpek severdik, çiçek böcek severdik, müzik dinlerdik,

günümüzden, gelece¤imizden, geçmiflimizden

konuflurduk. En çok gelece¤imizden konuflurduk.

My sister called. She’s getting married!

She said she found another one of her. Her face was

all distorted from happiness and excitement. She’s got

tattoos, she rides a motorbike, she’s wild. She said last

week they went to Antalya. I asked her if the regular

summer spots were still open. She said “What are you,

crazy It was freezing cold when we went swimming in

the sea.” She said there were dogs there and they

petted and pampered them. “He’s obviously crazy

about dogs too, as you can tell” she said. I asked her if

she was sure about that. She told me she couldn’t say

how he’d be in five years time, but I had to interrupt

her and ask her if she was sure what he was like right

now. I posed a question: “Can you look at him and say

‘this is the man I want to spend the rest of my life

with’” I said. “Yes! I can!” she answered. My little

sister. She made me cry when she told me she was

getting married, there, on the other end of the phone.

I immediately had a big bunch of orchids sent to her

hotel. She loves orchids.

I remember the hotel we stayed at. I tried to reserve

the same room in the same hotel for our fifth wedding

anniversary, but then we left Istanbul and it didn’t

work out. I told the receptionist over the phone that it

was a room looking out on to the street, behind the

elevator. The receptionist just told me that half the

rooms were like that, and asked me if I knew the room

number. I couldn’t remember but I told her it could be

on the third floor. Or was it the fourth I don’t

remember the elevator too well because I had left the

room. I was greeted by the fresh, clean, soothing hotel

smell. I was walking along the corridor.

I knew he was looking at me from behind. I turned

around, and sure enough, you were. You were leaning

against the door with your left foot a little in front of

your right, and you were looking at me with that

mischievous, seductive smile from those beautiful blue

eyes – those eyes I had gazed into and fallen in love

with just a night before. I was aware that this was all

as if in a movie scene, and I felt a little like Greta

Garbo, trying to smile the most wonderful smile

Madrid günefli coflturur adam›. Bu zaten dünden

raz›. Bizimki ne kadar duyguluysa, o koca sesiyle

nas›l hep ba¤›ra ba¤›ra konuflursa, merdivenlerden

en acelesi olmad›¤› zamanlarda bile pald›r küldür,

yuvarlan›rcas›na inerse, araban›n içinde o s›f›r

kulak s›f›r nota sesiyle kimseye ald›rmadan nas›l

camlar› aç›p flark›lar› söylerse -o yine iyi, karaoke

gecelerinde kötü bak›fllara gizli yuhlara ald›rmay›p

en zor flark›lar› üst üste, sahneden indirilemeden

söylerse- iflte o çocuk da öyleymifl. Diyor ki sanki

benden bir tane daha.

Bugün onun günü diye söylemedim, ama yar›n

kutlamak için bulufltu¤umuzda diyece¤im.

Kocam›n Viyana’dan gelen en yak›n arkadafl›,

inanam›yorum, bizim arkadafl›m›zdan bir tane daha

varm›fl, demiflti dü¤ün konuflmas›nda. Ne kadar

benziyorsunuz, demiflti. Nas›l güzel dans ediyorsunuz

birlikte. Nas›l ayn› fleylere gülüyorsunuz. Nas›l

ikinizin de sesi bu kadar güzel de birlikte böyle

flark› söyleyebiliyorsunuz. Sonra sonra anlafl›ld› ki o

“vurdu k›rd›” filmlerini seviyor, ben “festival”

filmleri. O eve gelir gelmez ceketini ç›kar›p

televizyonun karfl›s›na benim kesinlikle k›skand›¤›m

bir flekilde kurulabiliyor, benim ev haline girmem

yar›m saat. O yemek yapmay› seviyor, ben

toplamay›. O k›rm›z› et seviyor, ben sebze. Ama

sonra sonra anlafl›l›yor ki ayn› olan dünyevi

görüntüler de¤il, ruhtur.... Bir gün öyle, herkesin

kahve bile almaya çekindi¤i ciddi mi ciddi bir

toplant›da hat›rlad›m bundan sonra birlikte

geçirece¤imiz günlerin ilk gününü bize hediye eden

o güzel otelin odas›n›n: 307. Ne de olsa sonunda

flansl› numaram var.

Bugün ay›n 17’si. Bugün güzel bir gün; kardeflim

evlenecekmifl, hem de o tatl› çocukla!

I could. If I’d just tried to smile, that would’ve been

fine, but I tried to impress you, and my smile and

laugh suddenly felt insincere and affected. Our eyes

met. Since then we have never parted.

You used to come to that southern town where

I worked. We used to leave the coast and go up to

the mountains. We used to talk. We talked so much!

We talked about everything. We loved the cats and

the dogs, the flowers and the insects, we listened to

music, we used to talk about our past, our present

and our future. We talked about our future the most.

The future became ours. You became my future.

“We have to celebrate immediately!” I said to my

sister. “What are you going to wear at the wedding

don’t wear those long boring dresses with big blue

He said he’d take her to Antalya. He said “Jump in,

let’s go”. She was more than willing. Give her the

chance to be by the sea and she’ll jump on the

opportunity. She doesn’t care about food, sleep, rest

and all those things. She’ll just go without a second

thought, anywhere, just to be by the sea. So they

went. At first she apparently didn’t think much of

the guy. They went to the beach, they laughed and

played around, they swam in the freezing cold

water. It was November. Ok, Antalya’s not the Black

Sea or anything, but the water’s pretty cold. Those

two lunatics. Jumping in and out of the water. Then

apparently they went to their hotel in the city. And

the guy said it was the best day of his life, unaware

of the consequences of what he’d just said. How do

you like that Then he proposed to her as soon as

they went into their room. She must have been

stunned. Stunned, but not stunned enough to refuse

him! Good for her. When destiny comes you need to

know how to welcome it.

I asked her hesitantly how old he was. She told me he

was five years older than her. I told her that was fine,

that that was a good age difference. She has that kind

of emotional intelligence; sometimes you’d think she

was in her 50s. You’d be amazed. Sometimes she goes

to the most important meeting with a pair of old

tattered jeans. And sometimes she’ll just talk about

herself for hours, as if she were a three year-old and

the whole world revolved around her. She’d even lose

her voice from excitement. You’d be tired just listening

to her, but she’d never tire of talking and trying

desperately to catch her breath. She’s like a selfcontained

storm, a ball of energy and excitement. He’s

apparently going to come and ask for her hand on the

fifth of this month. Then they’re going to fly to

Madrid. These days asking for a girl’s hand has

become passé, but for some reason there’s a side to her

that still loves those old traditions and rituals. She’ll

be all panicky and excited. We have to teach her how

to make coffee as soon as possible. I mean, you can’t

have a traditional marriage proposal without being

served Turkish coffee by the prospective bride, can you

spirit. She was always ready for this. She said that

just as she likes to scream and shout and run even

though she might fall, just as she loves to sing at the

top of her lungs, despite her voice cracking and

despite the taunts from around her, he too will run

excitedly and sing at the top of his lungs. Like she

said, he was as if another one of her.

I didn’t tell her today because today is her day,

but I’ll tell her tomorrow when we celebrate. My

husband’s best friend from Vienna told us at our

wedding that he couldn’t believe that there was

another person in the world who was just like

his friend. He commented on how alike we were, how

well we danced together, how we laughed at the same

things, how our voices matched and complemented

each other so that we could sing the same songs in the

same keys. Then it turned out that he liked action

movies and I liked art house films. It turned out he

could just come home, put his jacket to the side and

immediately enter “home mode”, whereas that would

take me at least 30 minutes after stepping into the

house. He likes to cook, I like to clean. He likes red

meat, I like vegetables. But then you realize that that

which is the same is not what’s on the surface, but

what’s on the inside, the spirit, the soul. One day, in

a serious meeting where people didn’t even dare ask

for coffee, I remembered that hotel room where we’d

spent the first of our days together: it was number

307. It seems I have a lucky number.

Today is the 17th. Today is a beautiful day. My sister

is getting married, and with that wonderful man! We

have a lot to do. Let’s start with the most fun: picking

out a wedding dress.
