CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
“Jesus said to his apostles, “Come yourselves to an out-of-the-way place
and rest a little...” (Mark 6:31)
During the holidays Mrs Vernon and I led an excursion to Turkey with
thirteen senior students for a cultural exchange and an encounter with
Islam and history. It is difficult to escape the presence of Islam in
Turkey. For one thing, people are called to prayer five times a day from
mosque minuets that seem to stretch heaven-ward at every turn. As our guides quietly slipped
away for prayer in response to the calls, I took the opportunity to say a quiet one myself. As
one who prays, I quickly grew to love the routine of turning my awareness to God during the
day.
But it isn’t easy to find time for prayer when the ordinariness of daily living can be so
demanding, so I’ll share with you my prayer-plan for an Australian pray-er in the hope that you
may find it useful in your circumstances: four times a day – once before 9am, between 12md
and 2pm, around 5pm, and before bed. My morning prayer is somewhere else inside this
edition.
We may not have an out-of –the-way place, but we can remove ourselves from the daily hustle
for a moment of mindfulness until we do find that chance to rest a while.
I wish to advise of the following recent staff appointments:
particular within the Textiles and Hospitality areas. We welcome Penny to the school.
BREAKFAST FOR DAY STUDENTS IN THE DINING ROOM
With the increased demand for breakfast due to morning training for most sports,
problems are arising in a number of areas that need to be addressed. As parents
may or may not be aware, early morning breakfast for day students has been
available for many years and an honesty system for charging has been used. This
system is now inadequate and will have to be changed.
In order for the kitchen staff to cater for both the boarders and the increasing
number of day students, the following system will apply from Monday, 21 February.
1. Those day students wanting breakfast must advise the Accounts Office by
11.15 am the day before breakfast is required. This will enable numbers to be
provided to the kitchen for catering purposes.
2. If student’s names are not on the roll provided to the kitchen, they will not be allowed to enter
the dining room. The onus for having breakfast provided by the school for day students will now be
the responsibility of each day student.
3. Any day student who books breakfast and fails to turn up for that breakfast will still be charged,
as the kitchen staff will have to provide the meal based on their booking the day before.
4. The cost for breakfast will be $7.70 (inclusive of GST).
A staff member from each sport will be in attendance in the dining room to manage the roll on a daily
basis.
If there are any questions in relation to the new procedures, please contact the Bursar.
MORNING PRAYER
God, come to my assistance. Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
PSALM (Psalm 63:2-7)
Ant. As morning breaks I look to you, O God, to be my strength this day.
O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting.
My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water.
So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory.
For your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise.
So I will bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy.
Glory be …
Ant. As morning breaks I look to you, O God, to be my strength this day.
BENEDICTUS (Canticle of Zechariah, Luke 1:68 – 79)
Ant. Let us serve our Lord in holiness all of our days.
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has visited his people and redeemed them.
He has raised up for us a mighty saviour in the house of David his servant;
as he promised by the lips of holy men, those who were his prophets from of old.
A saviour who would free us from our foes, from the hands of all who hate us.
So his love for our fathers is fulfilled and his holy covenant remembered.
He swore to Abraham our father to grant us,
that free from fear, and saved from the hands of our foes,
we might serve him in holiness and justice all the days of our lives in his presence.
As for you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of God, the Most High.
You shall go ahead of the Lord to prepare his ways before him,
to make known to his people their salvation through forgiveness of all their sins,
the loving-kindness of the heart of our God who visits us like the dawn from on high.
He will give light to those in darkness,
those who dwell in the shadow of death, and guide us into the way of peace.
Glory be…
Ant. Let us serve our Lord in holiness all of our days.
PRAYERS OF THE HEART
LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Father, watch over your family and keep us safe in your care, for all our hope is in you.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Information for Parents of Years 10, 11 and 12
On 23 February, all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will meet in the DPA after school (3.40pm) to take part in a
forum on Organ Donation. We are involving these students because they are in the various stages of getting a
Learner’s or Provisional Driver’s Licence, and the question of organ donation is part of that process. Kathryn
Ainsworth, from Greater Western Area Health, and a donor family, will speak to the students and will provide
factual information, dispel myths and encourage discussion of the issue.
The session will last about 45 minutes and students will have every opportunity to ask questions. Parents are
more than welcome to attend too, if they wish to receive this information. There will be no charge for this
presentation.
If for any reason you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me on 63 920 302.
Learning Matters
Future Problem Solving
I take this opportunity to invite any student (Yr7 -11)
who is interested in joining the School’s Future
Problem Solving Team. Last year, we had two teams
(Middle Yr7-9 and Senior Yr10-11) and we want to
continue this for 2011.
The Future Problem Solving Program is a USA based
competition which runs each year, attracting around
300-400 schools and about 250,000 entrants. It is a
competition designed to stretch and engage students of
high ability and those with a passion for global issues. It
also aims to give young people the skills to design and
promote positive futures for the society in which they live.
Teams will meet either before school or during lunch time
once a week (TBC) and the programme is a year-long
commitment. Obviously those with key attributes
mentioned above (passion for global issues, desire for a
better future, enjoy discussion, exhibit and desire to
develop creative and critical thinking skills) as well as
those with commitment and good team working skills
should consider. But please note, that places are limited
and will undergo a selection process for suitability.
For more information check out the website
(http://fpsp.org.au) and if you are interested then pick up
an application form from Mr Choi in room 65.
Special Provisions
Special Examination Provisions for the School
Certificate tests and Higher School Certificate
examinations
Special Examination Provisions are practical arrangements
that make it possible for students with disabilities to
attempt the HSC and School Certificate
The provisions granted are solely determined by how the
students exam performance is affected. Provisions may
include large print papers, use of a reader and or writer,
extra time or rest breaks.
Applying for Special Examination Provisions
Special Examination Provisions Application forms and
information guides are available to parents from the Board
of Studies Website Schools Online
for students who intend to sit for the School
Certificate tests or Higher School Certificate
examinations in 2011.
Students and parents who wish to apply for special
examination provisions should see Mr Yooie Choi who,
with the help of the Learning Support Department, will
help process the application form.
In doing so, you will need to:
1. Indicate the provisions for which the student is
applying. In doing this, it is important to refer to the
application form, which gives examples of the provisions
that the Board considers most appropriate for a particular
special examination need.
2. Indicate how the special examination need affects the
student's work in the classroom and in examination
situations.
3. Supply evidence of the student's special
examination need. A guide to the various types
of evidence required is provided in the
application form.
It is important that the school return the
completed application form to the Board of
Studies by the due date.
The due date is the last day of Term 1,
2011, except for applications based on chronic fatigue
syndrome, post-viral syndrome, Ross River fever or
glandular fever, which should be submitted in July of the
examination year, with teacher comments and medical
documentation also dated July.
If all the necessary information is not provided, some
requested provisions may be declined due to insufficient
evidence.
How does the process work
Once the Board of Studies has received the application, a
letter acknowledging receipt is sent to the school. The
application is processed at the Office of the Board of
Studies.
The Board of Studies has a Special Provisions Panel; these
specialists include medical practitioners, educational
psychologists and consultants for the visually or hearing
impaired. The basis of the application and evidence
presented will determine which specialist will review the
file.
When a final decision has been made, written notification
of the approved and/or declined provisions is sent to the
principal, and to the student through the principal.
Appeal procedures
Should a student wish to appeal the decision to decline a
provision, the appeal must be submitted through the
school within 14 days of receiving the special examination
provisions decision letter. The appeal must state the
reason why the decision is considered unacceptable,
making reference to the evidence supplied in the original
application.
The appeal must include new supportive evidence, such as
a further medical report, which clearly states why the
student needs the provision, or additional reading, writing
or spelling test results.
The Board of Studies will conduct an independent review
and a decision will be made within twenty-one (21) days.
The outcome of the appeal will be advised to the school
and to the student.
A note to parents
If you are concerned about whether special examination
provisions apply for your child, you should contact Mr
Choi who will liaise with the Learning Support
Department.
The application form must be submitted by your child's
school as it requires specific information regarding the
difficulties your child may experience in a classroom or
examination situation. This does not mean, however, that
you should not be involved in the application process.
Yours in learning
Welcome to “Boarders’ Bitz”, a column designed to keep parents abreast of
developments in Boarding.
Could all Boarders families please give some thought to the Boarders Stall
for the Fair, which is to be held on Saturday 5 March 2011 The Boarders Stall is
to be a “Farmers Market” where we can all showcase the produce of our home
towns and regions. We shall be having a map of mainly NSW and wish to show
where we all live. Please donate local produce and bring flyers etc. to support this. Suggestions include
olive oil, salad dressings, honey, eggs, fresh produce etc. Please contact Jenny Quigley on 68473152 for
further information.
If you are able to assist on Fair Day with the Boarders’ Stall for an hour or two, could you please
contact Sally Rattray-Wood at School on 6392 0325, or srattray@kws.nsw.edu.au to have your name
added to the roster.
A reminder for our Year 7 Boarding Parents that the Year 7 Information session will also be held on
the morning of the P & F Fair, Saturday 5 March. This is an opportunity for our parents to learn more
about the day school at KWS. The information session will feature members of the School Staff and Senior
Management Team who will present information about the curriculum and the various co-curricular
activities offered at KWS.
Please also remember that the Boarders Parents’ Executive meeting will be held at 3.30pm – 4.30pm
in the Staff Room on Fair Day. I look forward to seeing some of our new boarding parents at this meeting.
It is a great opportunity for you to get involved in the boarding community at KWS.
I would urge you to book you accommodation in Orange for this weekend as soon as possible. There
are often a number of other events on in Orange this same weekend, and accommodation may be difficult
to obtain.
Parents of new boarders please note that Countrylink Boarders Passes are available for boarding
students who live in NSW. These passes entitle the boarder to free weekend and vacation travel to and
from the station or Countrylink coach stop nearest the student’s home and school. If you are interested in
Club 3:16
Friends and families, I wish to inform you of the launch of Club 3:16 for 2011! – the
School’s Christian Fellowship Group.
Club 3:16 can be a vital part in the faith journey of many students. It will be a time
to reflect, discuss and pray about issues specific to adolescent Christian life. We
aim to discuss the bible, pray and encourage each other to live as Christians at
School. Over time, it will also serve to initiate social justice projects in order to make a positive
contribution in our school community and beyond.
We will meet every Friday lunch - starting this Friday (18 th Feb) in room 65.
I encourage all students regardless of where they are at in their faith journey to come along, to bring their
lunch and meet in fellowship. Hope to see you at Club 3:16! And as an added incentive – all who come
along will get a soft drink!

Rowing Report
The State Championships Regatta 2010
Fifty nine members of the KW S rowing team
competed in this massive regatta over Friday,
Saturday and Sunday of the last weekend,
with a number of good performances.
The championships began with heats of the sculling
events on Friday after noon. Daniel Whitehead drew a
very strong heat in the Men’s Under 19 Single Scull and rowed
well for 4 th place, unfortunately missing out by one on qualifying for the
final. Ex-student boat club member Candice Williams then came 3 rd in her heat of
the women’s under 19 Single Scull to qualify for the semi-final later in the
afternoon where she again came 3 rd qualifying for the final on Saturday morning, in
which she came 8 th in our first race of the morning.
Saturday morning then progressed well with the year 10 boys Eight competing in
the schoolboys 3 rd Eight (of year 11 and 12 competitors), winning a good race
from the King school 3 rd Eight. The girls Four then came out in the final of the
Champion Schoolgirls Four to win our second gold medal of the Championships
with a strong race from the front all the way.
The KWS, under 17 girls double scull were unable to qualify for the final from
their heat, but Eden Taylorwood-Roe and Tom Whitehead in their boys under 17
double scull event, won their heat, at could only manage 5 th in the Final.
The two KWS entries in the champion schoolgirl quad scull were unable to qualify
for the final, although both rowed quite soundly. The senior boys came 2 nd in their
heat of the champion schoolboy quad scull, but in the final could only manage
fourth. These senior girls for then raced in the women’s under 19 four but were
unplaced in the final. The day finished with two KWS crews competing in the
men’s Under 16 double scull, coming 4 th and 5 th in the final.
Sunday started off with both KWS crews their heats of the under 16 women’s
quad scull, missing qualification for the final, one of them quite narrowly. Harriet
Hain then stepped up in her heat of the Champion schoolgirl’s single scull with a 3 rd placing to qualify for the
final, in which she came 5 th in a field which included some very strong interstate competition. Tim
Trethowan and Matt Haege both came 3 rd in their heats to qualify for the semifinals of the champion
schoolboy’s single scull, but they were then eliminated in the semifinals despite rowing well in strong
competition.
The K WS boys under 16 quad scull stroked by Alex Amos then raced well to win a bronze medal for 3 rd in
that event, with the other younger KWS crew competing also rowing well. The KWS two crews of KWS
competitors in the men’s under 17 quad both raced well, with the top crew narrowly losing to Newcastle
Grammar to win the silver medal for the event. Of the 2 KWS entries in the women’s under 16 single scull,
Madeline Hawthorne qualified for the final with a good seconds in her heat, while Prue Ecclestone just
missed out with a 4 th place in hers. Maddie went on to obtain 4 th place in the final of the event.
Of the 6 KWS competitors in the men’s under 16 Single Scull championships, Ben Watt won his heat and
Joe Burgess and Alex Amos came 2 nd in their to all progress to the final. In the final Ben Watt rowed
superbly to win the silver medal in a great race which he lost by only 0.5 seconds. The girls in the champion
schoolgirl double scull then rowed in their heat but were unable to qualify for the final. In the champion
schoolboy double scull of the two KWS crews Daniel Whitehead and Matt Simpson came 3 rd in their heat to
progress to the final in which they came 4 th . Racing finished for the day for KWS with the men’s under 17
Single Scull, where Thomas Whitehead qualified for the final with a 3 rd in his heat, but he was unplaced in the
final.
Overall Kinross Wolaroi School rowing team won 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal to
complete a successful state championship. It was a very busy weekend, as always strongly supported by a big
parental contingent, who assisted with towing and all the other logistics needed.
The next regatta is the ISA regatta in Canberra on Saturday, 26 th February and Sunday, 27 th February.
Notices will be distributed by email about arrangements for this regatta.

Girls Basketball
WAS Trials
After lunch yesterday, 8 girls
travelled down to Bathurst for
the junior and senior WAS
Basketball trials. Following a
heated hour and a half of running
around in the stadium, the teams were finally
announced. Making the junior team was Nikki Collins
and Sarah MacIntyre and in the senior team were Riana
Finn, Katie McKenzie, Sarah Burns, Megan Hunt and
Mikaela Cato. Well done girls on a solid effort and
impressive play.
KWS 1sts v Comeback Queens Won 33 / 26
At the commencement of the 1 st game last night
against the Comeback Queens, we took the court with
only 4 players. When we were joined by Sarah Burns a
couple of minutes in, we realised what a tough game
we were in for. Down by a few baskets, we started to
creep a few points back on the board and take the lead
until the refs called their 5 th foul on our post player,
Sarah in the 3 rd quarter. Back to 4 players, we knew we
had to lift our game. With encouragement from the
sideline, we rose to the challenge and played some
smart basketball. By the end of the game, we came out
on top with a seven point win 33-26. Highlights of the
game were: a reverse lay-up from Sarah Burns; Amy
Kennedy’s brilliant defensive play against the Queens’
best attacking player; all-round solid play and some
great passes by Sara McIntyre; awesome back up and
dribbling by Megan Hunt and some very “greasy looks”
by the captain !!!! It was a great game to watch and an
even better one to play. Congrats girls - still
undefeated.
Boys Basketball
KWS Bucks v KWS Kings lost 32-2
This was a bit of a wakeup call for the Bucks in terms
of their fitness. We held the Kings for most of the first
half but as our fitness deteriorated we failed to get
back in defence. Consequently the Kings were able to
attack the basket in numbers and ran out easy winners.
Despite this there were several encouraging signs. We
had a number of scoring opportunities but failed to
convert when we were in good positions. Our strong
defence in the first half also is a good sign for the
future. The game certainly gives us some training ideas
for the next week with fitness and shooting high on the
agenda!
13s Won 4½ – 1½ 35 – 13
On Saturday, the WAS tennis team travelled to
Bathurst to play St Stanislaus College. Cloudy weather
didn't prevent the team from having a ball, but rain did
stop play and only half the team got to complete their
singles matches. In some age groups a result was
secured even though the sets were not
all completed. Well done to Luke
Petraglia for his hard fought win in the
opens age group, and to Kali Marshal for
her well-deserved win in the 16s. Eleanor
Crane and David Selwood also had good
wins, which ensured the overall success
of the 13s age group.
Congratulations also to the following students who
represented the School at the Opens AICES Tennis
Championships on Friday 11th February: Jack Brand,
Sam Brand, Alastair Crane, Joey Kittichaiwong, Oliver
Webb, Alana Condon, Brooke Hamilton, Talor
Hamilton, Annabelle Quigley, Emily Simpson,
Christobel Webber, Luke Petraglia, Jessica Wright.
Most players were able to win a set in their pools in
very hot conditions. In the boys’ championships, Jack
Brand and Luke Petraglia made it through the pool
stages, with Jack going down in a tiebreaker in his
Quarter Final and Luke winning comfortably to go
through to the final 8. Luke Petraglia finished 7th which
should gain him CIS selection. In the girls’
championships, Talor Hamilton played extremely well
against a number of highly ranked opponents and was
unlucky to be in the toughest pool of the draw. Jessica
Wright won her pool and went on to win her
subsequent match for a top 4 finish and immediate
selection to the CIS competition later in the year.
Netball
Trials for the Opens 1sts, 2nds and 3rds begin this Friday at
lunchtime.
Please get changed quickly and report to the gym.
All other teams will be selected later in the term.
Cricket
KWS 15s v Molong
KWS played the first day of a two
day match against Molong on
Saturday. Despite a delayed start
and the loss of the last 15 minutes of play, we managed to
get 50 out of 55 overs bowled and have the opposition
7/131 at the end of play.
Molong won the toss and batted. We made an early
breakthrough and had Molong at 1/14 and were looking to
go on and take several more wickets before drinks to put
Molong under real pressure but a 79 run
partnership followed. If we had taken our catches then
this partnership would not have grown to the size it did
but we had one of those days where catches did not stick
and top edges dropped just out of or beyond the reach of
fielders. The partnership was broken at 93 and we then
went on to take 5 wickets for 37 runs thanks to tight
bowling from Charlie Harris, Peter Crisp, and Charles
Litchfield.
Thanks to Mr Litchfield for his help with umpiring and to
all other parents for their support. Your continuing
assistance and support is appreciated by players and coach
alike.
We look forward to the challenge of chasing down the
target next Saturday. To be successful, we are going to
have value our wickets, play straight and build
partnerships with good running between the wickets as
well as aggressive shot making.
Rugby News
Welcome to 2011 and a Rugby Season fast approaching. Welcome also to new players and parents.
The Draw for the Season will be on the KWS Website by the end of the week (The School Calendar
also has the games scheduled)
(details will be forthcoming) Final plans are being put in place for the Rugby tours to NZ and Fiji
Finally on a very important note, catering for food and drinks at Home games is critical to the success of Rugby at
KWS and we are renowned for having the best catering of all the schools in the ISA Comp.
For the 2011 season the Rugby Club needs an individual(s) or a family to step into the position of
Catering Coordinator (training and coaching will be provided!). Can you please phone or email me if you are able
to assist in any way with this position.
