17 cities
56 settlements
Island operations
No electric connections.
Production units and back-ups in all cities and
settlements.
High demand on supply security.
Principle of the H2KT
project
The H2KT project is to conduct test of hydrogen
energy storage.

Electricity from hydro power is used for hydrogen
production.
Hydrogen is stored and later converted to electricity &
heat in a fuel cell.
Hydrogen can be distributed to cities/settlements with
only diesel energy.
Hydrogen can also later be used as fuel for transport.
Use of oxygen at local hospital is being explored.
Myth buster
People in Nuuk, might have noticed a spaceship look-alike thing in
front of Nukissiorfiits headquarter. And once in a while it spits
flames. But don’t worry. It’s nor a spaceship neither is it going to
explode. We dealing with a test unit, for Hydrogen energy storing.
What have we learned?
Only one project manager. We have had three
in the deveploment stage
After the field test, who is responsible?
14 dayes failure free production, not done yet
because lack of time and the operation
department haved been mooved.
Assignment of the test plant.
Misunderstanding between the contractor and
the Greenlandic authorities about electric
installations.
14

Equipment failures.
Fuel cell internal failure. (Canada)
Electrolyse pump leak. (Italy)
UPS. Battery failure. (Denmark)
Communication failure fuel cell. (Denmark)
Circuit breaker. (Denmark)
Potential phases in the H2KT project
• Phase 1 was concluded in Feb. 2010 where a small sized test plant
started operation in Nuuk (the capital of Greenland)
• Possibility of capturing oxygen for hospital use is being analyzed
• Analysis of opportunities in phase 2 & 3 are ongoing
• Phase 2 could be installation of a fuel cell at another location in Nuuk,
with hydrogen supply from the H2KT production plant
• Phase 3 could be test plant in local settlement or peak balancing
Phase 1 – testplant in Nuuk
Phase 2 – transportation of H2
Phase 3 – H2 fuel cell Test
