What is BEECK?
BEECK’schen Farbwerke introduces itself.
In 1894, the company founder Ludwig Beeck established his business in Breslau with the development and production of pure active silicification
mineral paints based on water glass. He achieved inseparable bonding between the coating and microporous substrate with BEECK Pure
Crystalline Finish, a mineral paint system suited for particularly valuable historical building materials in interior and exterior areas. These original
formulae are still used today for the conservation of built heritage and impress with their large colours diversity and their enormous durability.
Ecology
Pure mineral paints are natural mineral paints. Obtained from practically unlimited resources of raw mineral materials, they are integrated in
material cycles. Free from solvents, plasticisers and biocides, they enable a healthy living environment.
A new and less expensive product category, synthetic resin emulsion paint, meant hard times for a resolute mineral paint manufacturer during the
construction boom of the 1950s and 1960s. Mineral paints were nearly forgotten and structural damage caused by the improper use of synthetic
resins on porous mineral building materials increased.
Despite the clear trend towards synthetic resin emulsion paints, BEECK’schen Farbwerke remained true to the development and production of
pure, natural coating systems. Based on its experience with pure mineral paints made of lime and water glass, the company invested in developing
pure plant-based paints. The AGLAIA Natural Paints brand created in 1968 has rounded off the BEECK product portfolio meaningfully ever
since then.
The following owner, Gerhard Osterle, as a specialist in mineral and natural paints, also especially dedicated himself to their continued development.
With the construction of the new production facility in 1972 in Laichingen, in the Swabian Alp region, he invested in modern machines, an
in-house development and application laboratory and outstanding specialists as the most important knowledge carriers.
The tradition of building had changed in the past decades, and with it came new requirements for high quality and modern coating materials.
Since the company was founded, work had been consistently carried out using natural raw materials such as beeswax, linseed oil, dammar and
paracasein. To this day, BEECK offers a selected paint product range, which satisfies the highest standards.
Service
Quality in materials, substrates and use is prerequisite for a coating to become what it should be – a success for skilled trades workers, owners
or developers and designers. BEECK offers its whole range of services for the success of the customer, from competent substrate evaluation
and preparation of work recommendations to detailed tender specification texts and estimating.
References
Nothing is more convincing than decades of clean and brilliantly beautiful façades – that is the standard with BEECK Mineral Paints!
Built heritage conservation
BEECK has stood for top quality lime and soluble water paints suited for use on historical building materials for more than 120 years. Proven on
critical substrates of listed buildings, on which synthetic resin bonded systems frequently fail.
Economic efficiency
The cheerful character, the play of colours and the lightfastness of the pure mineral pigmentation enhance the status of each building for many
decades. This unsurpassed durability of BEECK Mineral Paints makes their use maintenance friendly and therefore economical.
Building physics
The capillary-active coatings have ideal open porosity, and are therefore extremely valuable in building physics terms. Thanks to silicification they
form an inseparable mineral unit with the render, do not tend to flake and also do not form a vapour-tight, high-tension rind in when renovated.
This open porosity also ensures a balanced, healthy living room climate. The high alkalinity of the coatings has a mould resistant and bactericidal
effect. Free from solvents, plasticisers, biocides and preservatives they fulfil the strictest room air hygiene requirements.
BEECKASF ®
ActiveSilicateFormulation
Silicification – the microporous, inseparable unity of substrate and active silicate coating! Ideal
building physics properties combined with extreme durability, the secret of true silicate coatings.
Resistant to UV radiation as well as organic solvents and paint strippers. Weathering caused by
weak chalking with active self-cleaning effect.
Innovation
The advantages of mineral coatings cannot just be used on traditional building materials but also on composite materials and lightweight building
components. A wide range of primers also opens up their use on substrates with weak silicification.
Aesthetics
In aesthetic terms the matt coatings are unsurpassably attractive, especially in the modern ambience too. Traditional coating materials such as
lime wash paints are especially compatible with historically valuable wall building materials such as air-lime plaster, clay or loam and natural
stone. Reversible coatings and casein paints, with their vital character and blaze of colour are also firmly anchored in restoration and church
painting, and lend every listed building a very special aura.
Film formation with commonly used emulsion, silicone resin and passive silicate paints. Organic
synthetic resin bonds the surface of the building material with pigments and extenders. This is disadvantageous
from a building physics point of view, because it has a negative effect on diffusion.
Film-forming coatings also tend to become brittle and flake, causing the façade coating to become
an expensive dead-end after only a few renovation intervals.
Is this practice the high art of the painting and decorating trade?
resistant to stripping! detaches as a film
BEECK Mineral Paints in Interiors
The advantages of mineral coatings can also be used outstandingly well in interiors.
Their open porosity ensures a balanced, healthy living room climate. The high alkalinity
of the coatings has a mould resistant and bactericidal effect. Free from solvents,
plasticisers, biocides and preservatives they fulfil the strictest room air hygiene requirements.
In aesthetic respects the matt coatings are unsurpassedly attractive, especially in a
modern ambience on substrates such as gypsum board and nonwoven wall covering.
Traditional coatings such as lime wash paints are especially compatible with historically
valuable wall materials such as air-lime plaster, clay or loam and natural stone.
In restoration and church painting, reversible coatings and casein paints with their
cheerful appearance and blaze of colour are also securely anchored and lend each
listed building a very special aura.
The Task
In 2010 the main building was generally modernised,
which also included a new colour scheme
for the entire interior design. The auditorium with
the flat dome, the foyer and the staircases were
all included in the redesign.
The aim was to draw up a coherent colour and
surface concept, appropriate for the building‘s
cultural history significance.
The effect of the coating systems used and the
interaction of the different surfaces had to produce
an authentic and period style image.
Good building physics properties and a high degree
of robustness were also required, not only
to ensure high value stability, but also to ensure
economic maintenance.
The Project Stages
First, extensive restoration work was carried out
to check and to secure old findings and to compile
a coherent and fine colour concept. Based
on this, the lead restorer then created extensive
sample areas (“Musterachsen”) in which to carry
out tests and sample coatings, which ultimately
led to the decision regarding the paint systems
to be used – not only with regard to technology
but also the colour.
The responsible firm of architects, the restorer
and the responsible consultant of BEECK’schen
Farbwerke provided advice and documented the
precise implementation of the largely very sophisticated
coating work.
BEECK Silicate Primers
Primers fulfil diverse tasks and are as varied in their use as the substrates they are
used to coat.
BEECK Fixative consolidates porous, mineral building materials. On water repellent
substrates BEECK MBA-Fixative is the first choice. BEECK Silane Primer acts as a
water-repellent special primer for critical substrates such as brick and natural stone,
while thanks to its excellent adhesion, BEECK Bonding Coat, whether Fine or Coarse,
also makes weak silicification substrates accessible for mineral paint coatings. BEECK
Quartz Filler is a slurrying primer that reliably bridges hairline cracks and minor structural
defects. As a slurrying additive for silicate paints, BEECK Quartz Filler P in powder
form can be used universally.
“Gründerzeithaus”
Leopoldstraße 153 in
Munich
Task:
The aim was to completely redesign the colour
finish of the façade of this “Gründerzeit” building.
Examination of the old coating showed that multiple
layers of organically bonded, film-forming
coatings had been applied to the mineral façade
render and had resulted in building physics
limitations. The surfaces were highly soiled due
to thermoplastic effects and contained extensive
fine hairline cracks.
The following criteria were used to define the objective
of the new colour finish:
- The old multi-layered organic coating was to be
removed completely from the façade through
paint stripping.
- A coating system with high weathering resistance
and long lives, extreme water vapour
permeability, and an unmistakeable matt, mineral
character.
- By creating sample areas, a suitable paint system
and colour were to be found, which removed
the hairline crack phenomena with suitable
products.
- The new coating system should only be applied
using mineral paint techniques, very thinly with
a brush.
Project stages:
Due to the existing condition of the surfaces
found on site the old coating was removed completely.
Sample areas were created using the
defined technology. After making good existing
render and applying new render the planned
coating technology was applied. After the individual
work steps were completed the responsible
BEECK consultant examined the results and released
the finished areas for further work.
The work on site was checked and documented
continuously with regard to the specified products
and technology.
Result:
The standards worded in the objectives were
achieved. The coating system and colour defined
on the basis of old sample areas produced
a true-to-style matt appearance and lends the
façade surface a unique mineral profile.
BEECK Building Preservatives
Mineral building materials outdoors are exposed to diverse
weathering. Rainwater results in increased building material
moisture with all the associated harmful mechanisms such as
corrosion, frost splitting, algae growth and the activation of
structurally harmful salts.
The combination of durable silicate coatings with pore hydrophobic
silicon organic building preservatives has proven its
worth for decades. BEECK Silicone Plus protects façades made
“Kurfürstliches Schloss Mainz”
Task:
Since 2010, work has been underway to thoroughly repair the façade of this important building of the German Renaissance. The two-wing building with
rich architectural structuring of the base areas, cornices, window reveals and pilasters made of Bunter sandstone and rendered surfaces showed signs of
sanding, chalking of the old mineral coating and contour scaling and was therefore in need of fundamental rework and repair.
After the fundamental addition and replacement of Bunter sandstone elements, the following aspects had to be taken into account for the new colour finish
- What was needed was a coating system, which was not only highly weather resistant and had a long life, but also retained the matt mineral character.
In addition, despite extreme water vapour permeability, the water transport of salts and harmful to the building materials and discolouring minerals were
to be stopped.
- The red to light-brown historical colour was to be determined authentically by trying out an individual colour recipe on test areas.
- The new coating system should only be applied using mineral paint techniques, very thinly with a brush.
- The coloured design of the new oak windows was to be applied with a glazing linseed oil system, especially with regard to good building physics properties
and economic maintenance intervals.
Project stages:
Based on the existing findings and expertises on the surface character and the ideas of the objectives of the client, the City of Mainz, the competent built
heritage conservation office and the firm of architects, the new coating system was tried out on test areas. In the factory, several colour samples had been
formulated to specification and tried out on original substrates.
After examining the sample areas and defining the application technology together with determining the precise application rates, the public invitation to
tender for the pending coating work issued. The work was checked and documented with regard to the specified products and technology.
Result:
The standards worded in the objectives were achieved. With its matt appearance, the new „special Schloss Mainz colour“ based on old findings“ is trueto-style
and lends the sandstone of the façade surface a unique mineral profile. The colour design of the new oak windows with the stand oil system
harmonises with the overall appearance of the historic building complex.
“Griesbachsches Haus” in Jena
Task:
The so-called „princess‘s little palace“ built in 1784 in the style of German classicism was completely renovated between 2010 and 2011.
Prior to the remediation, extensive work was carried out to secure findings, in order to be able to design the subsequent colouring largely true to the
original in materiality and colourfulness. It was during this early phase that BEECK´schen Farbwerke became active and, as a renowned manufacturer
of paint systems compatible with built heritage conservation, it was involved in the preliminary planning. This was followed by close collaboration with the
responsible restorer, the architects and the built heritage conservation authority, to draw up the detailed work steps for the respective interior and exterior
substrates to clear restoration requirements, which were then summarised in tender specifications.
Project stages:
In the exterior area a new mineral render was applied to the façade. The paint system was also to have a classic mineral character and achieve its effect
through timeless aesthetics. With the one-pack active silicate system Beeckosil an extremely durable façade paint was applied. This impresses through
its exclusively mineral pigmentation and high colour resistance. All wooden elements such as cornices, windows and window shutters were redecorated
with new colour using a weather resistant, colour-stable opaque stand oil wood glaze.
The paint systems required in the interior which also – not only had very good building physics properties – but also lend the building a stylish look and at
the same time are suitable for everyday public use. Due to the very different substrates, such as old coats and mineral as well as gypsum-based plasters, it
was necessary to apply a paint system, which complied with the required good building physics properties with universal character. With BEECK Kasolit, a
synthetic resin-free casein paint with convincing hiding power, abrasion and chalking resistance, all wall and ceiling surfaces were coated in subtle mineral
colours. The result was a stylish, coherent colour concept with a fine surface look.
The interior wooden elements such as doors, panelling and skirting boards were coated with BEECK Interior Stand Oil Paint. This was applied in thin coats
and lends the building elements a true-to-style and material-compatible look.
Result:
This reference properly also illustrates graphically that where all kinds of different surface and therefore specific coating material requirements exist, the
full range of BEECK´schen Farbwerke products suitable for built heritage conservation can provide a high-quality solution.
BEECK Stand Oil Paints
Oil paints are durable coatings that have been tried and tested for centuries on wood
and ferrous metal surfaces in interior and exterior areas. The drying linseed oil acquired
from cold-pressed linseed interlinks by absorbing oxygen and forms a resistant,
waterproof coating film and securely integrates pigments.
„Stand oil paints“ are qualities which have been produced from „seasoned“ linseed
oil stored for lengthy periods – a quality epitome with regard to drying, hardness and
non-swellability in water!
The product range of BEECK Stand Oil Paints now covers all application areas in
restoration and historic building conservation. In true period style in terms of material
and bronzing, suitable for listed buildings in terms of pigmentation and appearance,
contemporary in terms of ease of maintenance and use properties, BEECK Stand Oil
Paints have long since managed to make the leap from being niche products and set
standards for modern coating qualities.
BEECK Stand Oil Wood Glazes
The wish for transparent, surface treatment of exposed wood often conflicts with poor
durability and rapid weathering in exteriors. With their pure mineral, highly UV resistant
pigmentation, BEECK Stand Oil Wood Glazes lend the best possible protection
against weathering. Their low tendency to flake and the extremely thin layered application
method make the coatings efficient and maintenance friendly. The oil molecules
of the stand oil wood glazes anchor themselves deep in the wood. Absorbent, good
gripping wood such as half-timbered buildings and rough-sawn formwork form an ideal
substrate for oil-based wood glazes.
“Rathaus Marktzeuln”
Task:
Between 2011 and 2013, the town hall, or „Rathaus“ in Marktzeuln was completely renovated. This unique gem of the Franconian Baroque half-timbering
skill was to be prepared extensively for reuse according to built heritage conservation aspects. The new colour finish of the façade and the overall interior
structure played an important role, especially as the effect of such a historical building is defined by colours.
Prior to the work on site, extensive preparations were carried out to secure findings, in order to be able to design the subsequent colouring largely true
to the original in materiality and colourfulness. BEECK´schen Farbwerke, as a renowned manufacturer of paint systems compatible with built heritage
restoration requirements, which were then summarised in tender specifications.
Project stages:
After the old coatings had been completely removed, very weather-resistant and colour-stable opaque BEECK Stand Oil Paints were used for the exterior
with its dominant half-timbered ensemble. The infill areas were given new colour with the one-pack active silicate system Beeckosil. This meant that
paint systems were used, which are not only robust and have low resistance to water vapour diffusion, but also result in very cost-effective maintenance
intervals.
The paint systems required in the interior which also – not only had very good building physics properties – but also lend the building a stylish look and at
Result:
This reference properly illustrates graphically that where all kinds of different surface and therefore specific coating material requirements exist, the full
range of BEECK´schen Farbwerke products suitable for built heritage conservation can provide a high-quality solution on numerous substrates. The new
