Species Action plan

for Latvia

Threats

• Lack of appropriate protection measures for

breeding grounds;

• Lack/shortage of compensatory measures for

forest and fish farm owners;

• Shortage of suitable nest trees;

• Shooting;

• Lead poisoning;

• Disturbance during the early stages of breeding

season;

• Collision with powerlines and wind turbines

Actions needed

• Searching for new nests and providing of

necessary protection measures;

• Banning of lead ammunition;

• Considering the potential impact during the

planning of new wind parks;

• Renewing of compensatory schemes for fish

farm owners

Monitoring and research

• Monitoring of breeding population (numbers

and breeding success);

• Assessing the causes of death;

• Researching the use of home range and

migration routes;

• To continue the participation in colour ringing

programme/ ring readings
