„L‘esprit de Paris“
Ravel, Debussy, Messiaen, Franck - the city of Paris connects them all.
The violinist Berenice Christin Terwey and her sister Philomela Eva Terwey
(piano) studied in Paris French repertoire with Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen and
with Davina van Wely, a pupil of Georges Enescou in Paris.
Motivated by the enthusiasm of their audience for their interpretations of
French composers, such as recently at the Festival Semana Musical Argentina,
in Dresden, Nuremberg etc., both musicians decided to dedicate a recital
programme to French music.
On the occasion of their debuts at the International Music Festival in Lucerne,
at the Teatro Colsubsidio Bogotà, and in the Palaú de la Música Valencia, the
Luzerner Zeitung, El Tiempo Bogotá and Las Provincias are predicting that
they have „a great future“ ahead of them. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
described their performance as “a complete aesthetic work of spectacular
perfection“.
Their interpretations of French repertoire get „a striking appeal, esprit and elegance,
sometimes even a whirringly grotesque charm“ (Nürnberger Zeitung),
„a crystal-clear brilliance and a fluorescent and auratic substance.“ (FAZ), but
also „amazing expressiveness that it threatens to tear and rip apart, dragging
every soul present in its wake. The electricity was physically palpable. Overwhelming.“
(FLZ, A. Merklein)
For Dietrich Wolf of the Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten it seemed almost as
if Claude Debussy had “personally dedicated (his Sonata in D minor) to the
striking figure of the young Terwey and her brilliant playing“.
The performances that they have already given throughout the world are fitting
demonstrations of their unique talents, and leave audiences in absolutely no
doubt that they are among the most promising and uniquely interesting artists
in their field.
The venues and events that they have graced in their career so far include
such renowned halls as the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Tonhalle in Zurich,
the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, De Doelen in Rotterdam, the Tonhalle
in Düsseldorf, St. John‘s Smith Square in London, the Großes Festspielhaus
in Salzburg, the Musikfestwochen in Lucerne, the Festival Sommets Musicaux
de Gstaad, the Internationale Schlossfestspiele Weilburg, the Festival
Mährischer Herbst, the Janacek Theater Brno, the Leipziger Gewandhaus, the
Munich Philharmonic, the Music Academy in Budapest, the Teatro Ghione in
Rome, the Palau de la Musica in Valencia, the Teatro Arias Pérez de Colsubsidio
in Bogotá, Columbia, the Concertgebouw in Haarlem, the Festival Semana
Musical Llao Llao in Argentina as well as many others.
The biggest newspapers in Argentina, including La Nación, described this
unique duo as having „a rare spiritual union, timbral splendour, and finely
measured layers of tone, a first-class technique, and expressive depth“.
„With this recital (they) have given one the festival one of its highlights“
and earned „gigantic ovations and huge enthusiasm from the audience“.
„A splendid and unforgettable evening…“
During the process of interpretation, their passion for French litterature and
fine arts, opera, and ballet let them face the aesthetics of the compositions
having a commanding knowledge.
They are interpreters, who always become one with the spirit of the composer
and who convincingly succeed in realising what they feel.
Berenice Christin Terwey plays a violin made by A. Stradivari (1698), which
was provided to her by a patron for lifetime use, as well as violin bows made
by the French masters D. Peccatte and F. Lupot at their Parisian ateliers.
The project „L‘Esprit de Paris“ presents highlights of French repertoire - „like
a revelation“ (Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten)
