We will soon be selecting officers and committee members for 2011 at BUMC. If you are

interested in knowing more about the ways to serve in ministry at BUMC, you are invited to

meet with Pastor Robert at a “Getting Plugged In” session. We will cover both leadership roles

and other serving roles. Come at your choice of times:

TUESDAY, SEPT. 14 7 p.m. in Room 208

SUNDAY, SEPT. 19 10 a.m. in the sanctuary

The family of Conway Waak, Sr.

would like to thank you for your

support during our recent loss.

Perhaps you sent a lovely card,

Chose a memorial with care,

Or sat quietly in a chair.

Perhaps you sent a floral piece

If so, we saw the sympathy there.

Perhaps you gave food to share,

Or your services that day,

Or spoke the kindest words as any friend

could say.

Perhaps you were not there at all

Just thought of us or made a call.

Whatever you did to console a heart

We deeply appreciate any part.

This Sunday, Sept. 12, Pastor Robert will present another unique SERMON IN SONG. He

will lead the worship service from the piano bench. SERMON IN SONG will take place at both the

9 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship service. You won’t merely be a spectator, as there will be plenty of

congregational singing. Both services will be identical, and will take place in the sanctuary. Plan

to stay for the churchwide luncheon in the MAC.

This year’s SERMON IN SONG will be a brand-new presentation using The Lord’s Prayer as

the outline, for both singing and the message. You will come away with a fresh appreciation for the

familiar words – “Our Father, who art in heaven…” INVITE SOMEONE to come with you this

Beth Moore Study - Tuesdays at 6:15p.m.

beginning September 14, for 10 weeks.

Breaking Free: The Journey, The Stories - Member Book by Beth Moore leads you

through a study of the Scriptures to discover the transforming power of freedom in Jesus

Christ. Themes for this study come from Isaiah, a book about the captivity of God's children,

the faithfulness of God, and the road to freedom.

This in-depth women's Bible study draws parallels between the captive Israelites of the

Old Testament and New Testament believers in Jesus as the Promised Messiah. Beth looks at

the Book of Isaiah through the lives of the kings who ruled during the prophet's ministry.

These kings exemplify many of the obstacles to freedom with which we must deal. Using

Scripture to help identify spiritual strongholds in your life, no matter how big or small, Beth

explains that anything that hinders us from the benefits of knowing God is bondage.

Join Beth Moore on a Bible journey unlike any other. God intends for you to know and

believe Him, glorify Him, experience His peace, and enjoy His presence. Breaking Free is Beth's

life message that she wants to share with you.

of Prayer" will be held Thursday, October 28 through

Saturday, October 30 at Lakeview Methodist Conference

Center near Palestine. This retreat is designed for

individuals who are seeking a deeper relationship with

God through study, practice and spiritual formation;

looking for spiritual nurture, renewal and rest; and

seeking to be formed and transformed for Spirit-led

leadership in ministry. Retreat speaker will be the

Bishop Janice Riggle Huie has planned a series of open meetings to meet with members of area

Methodist congregations. The meeting for our area is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at

Aldersgate UMC in College Station. She will be joined by conference lay leader Leah Taylor and assistant to

the Bishop, Rev. B. T. Williamson. The bishop and her team will be hosting conversation about leading

change in the local church. (Bishop Huie is meeting with the pastors at a separate time that afternoon, so this

gathering is for the church members.)

She also wants to listen regarding the challenges congregations are facing, and to hear your suggestions

about how the conference might best help you. The team will also share information learned regarding fruitful

congregations changing lives and reshaping futures for Jesus Christ. Mark this date now. Let’s try to have a

good turnout from Bellville.

(NOTE: If this date is a conflict for you, you may find it more convenient to attend one of the two

identical events scheduled at convenient locations in the Houston area, on both Wednesday, Sept. 15 and

Thursday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. Please call Pastor Robert for information on the location for these gatherings.)

sharing it!

I ran across this cute little piece, and since September is here, I couldn’t resist

The members of a church were surprised to hear their pastor announce that he would never

again attend a football game. When pressed for an explanation, he gave the following reasons:

• Every time I go to a game, someone asks me for money.

• Although I went to a lot of games and yelled a lot, very few people spoke to me personally.

• The benches were hard and uncomfortable.

• The referee did things I could not agree with.

• The coach did not call or visit me.

• I saw hypocrites who seemed more interested in the hot dogs than the game.

• I didn’t know all the tunes that the band played.

• I found a book on football, so I just stay home and read it to myself.

Good food for thought during gridiron season!
