Dear Parents,
From the Head of Junior School’s Desk
With the early onset of the storm season, it is timely to review our procedures and
expectations which swing into operation when storms hit, most often mid-afternoon
compromising departure routines.
Should parents become aware that a storm is imminent and make the decision to collect
their son early from school, they are more than welcome to do so. However, once a
storm has commenced parents would be discouraged from attempting to collect their
son due to the inherent dangers and safety concerns.
Once there is the presence of lightning and thunder, the procedure which operates is
similar to a “lock down” routine. Students and staff remain indoors and are not permitted
to be outside the classroom until notified of the all clear via the PA system.
Some implications for parents are as follows:
• Due to disruption to power and the safety risks posed by accessing telephone
landlines and cabled computers, reception staff will not answer the phone,
instead allowing it to go to message bank and clearing the messages later when
it is safe to do so while email communication will be terminated;
• Student dismissal at 2.55pm may be delayed until the threat has passed;
• Pick-up/ Drop-off Zone will not operate until the threat has passed;
• Similarly, bus transit may be delayed;
I thank you for your understanding should these procedures be necessary this term. The
safety of all members of our school community remains the highest priority.
End of Year Camping Program
The camping program is approaching rapidly. These activities enable the boys to interact
within their peer groups in differing contexts, highlighting a variety of skills including
organisational abilities, problem-solving expertise, group work and domestic skills.
These programs are graduated to accommodate the needs and ages of the students:
• Year 3 – overnight camp at school
• Year 4 – 2 days, 1 night staying at Bornhoffen, Springbrook
• Year 5 – 3 days, 2 nights at Tyalgum Ridge Retreat, Tyalgum NSW
• Year 6 – 3 days, 2 nights at Currimundi Beach
BASC – Student Free Day (Monday 22 October)
BASC will be operating on the Student Free Day. Bookings are essential as numbers
are limited.
Senior School Fundraiser - Slushie Day/s
The Senior boys have chosen to renovate and establish a Seniors' Common Room in the old “Armoury” adjacent to the Seniors'
Quad. This room had fallen into disrepair until the Seniors, through the assistance of Mr Blyth and the IGS Maintenance Team,
have gone about the process of resurrecting it to its original state. To raise money for the renovation, the Seniors will be selling
“slushies” on the following days:
Prep to Year 2 students - Tuesday 16 October
Year 3 to Year 6 students - Wednesday 17 October
Cost: $2.00 per slushie.
Prep to Year 2 students will pre-order in the morning (Tuesday 16 October) by letting their teacher know their name, choice of
flavour (bubblegum and cola) and pay their money. The rolls are then delivered to the Junior School reception for collection by the
Seniors. At lunch, your son will accompany his classmates to collect his slushie from the Seniors adjacent to the Sports Dome.
The Seniors will be located in the Junior School Courtyard on Wednesday 17 October for the Year 3 to 6 students to purchase
a slushie.
Exercise Book Covers - 2013
Each year, usually in January, I find myself thinking impure thoughts because of my frustration with sticky contact plastic and
my rush to cover exercise books for my children. I know that this same ritual and annoyance takes place in many other school
households.
In conjunction with the school's 150th anniversary, the Junior School Parent Support Group has agreed to supply hard-wearing
and decorative slip-on PVC book covers as a fundraising venture. Mrs Hooper and Miss Perrem have worked solidly to design
Junior School: 3813 9630 - Absentees: 3813 9666 - Junior School Fax: 3280 1384 - BASC: 0439 077 650
attractive artwork in order to finalise the school's order in sufficient time for supply before students depart at the end of November.
Having purchased many rolls of contact plastic over the years, many of which were of dubious quality, I know how expensive the
entire exercise can get. In setting prices for the new book covers, we have attempted to ensure that the costs are reasonable
and comparative to some which can be purchased from stores.
When viewing the order form (hard copy will come home shortly with students also) and brochure, you will note that Mrs Hooper
and Miss Perrem have included the total number of exercise books of the two available sizes which are on the booklists for next
year. As a parent, you may wish to purchase covers for all of them. However, please remember that a handful of these books are
placed in storage each year until the student has finished one book and needs a replacement. Should you wish to save on the
cost of covers, it is intended that a cover be removed from any completed book before it is sent home and then the cover can be
used on the replacement. Worth considering.
I encourage families to seriously consider ordering some of these book covers. I certainly will in order to preserve my peace of
mind in January!
Tuckshop orders
It is timely to remind parents of a few notes regarding tuckshop orders:
• Tuckshop ordering is easiest and most secure using Flexischools so that money does not need to come to school and the
orders are forwarded through to the tuckshop automatically.
• Parents who placed regular weekly orders for last term will need to reinstate these orders again for this term. They do not
automatically carry over.
• Students in Years 5 and 6 who participate in interschool sport on Fridays should either bring their lunch on Fridays or order
all of their food at Morning Tea as students depart on buses by 12.15pm, well before lunch orders are prepared. If ordering
all food at Morning Tea, please ensure that the elements which will be kept in school bags for consumption at lunch will keep
appropriately in this non-refrigerated environment.
Sincerely,
David Macknish
