WELCOME
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Prof. Dr. Ingo Marzi
ESTES President
2011-2012
On behalf of the European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES), with its 10,000 members from 79 countries, I invite
you to the 13 th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ECTES) to be held in Basel, Switzerland from May 12-
15, 2012. At the meeting we will focus on a broad range of Trauma related topics under the title: Many Ways – One Goal!
The “One Goal” is to provide trauma patients the best possible care. This can only be achieved, when the care they receive is
coordinated, timely and most importantly, of the highest quality. Whether our patients suffer from accidents, disasters, or diseases
requiring resuscitation, emergency care, surgery, intensive care, and rehabilitation, as Trauma Surgeons it is our responsibility and
indeed our privilege to oversee their care throughout the pre-, intra- and post-operative periods.
Providing the highest-quality care in a coordinated and comprehensive manner requires a high level of education, training, and
experience. As the new President of ESTES, I am committed to providing opportunities for education, training and experience
through the promotion of training programmes, courses and scientific communication. At the heart of this effort is our society’s
journal “The European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (EJTES)”, which aside from the society has become an
internationally recognised leading voice in the field.
While many aspects of trauma care, like trauma systems, emergency surgery and trauma education and intra-hospital
organisation, vary in our member countries, ESTES strives to act as a single unifying voice focused on the delivery of high-quality
care. With this in mind, ESTES is working to develop a Pan European Trauma Registry to standardise best practices in trauma
care throughout Europe.
Please join us in Basel at the 13 th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. The Congress Presidents, Dominik Heim
and Reto Babst, have done a superb job of organising a stimulating scientific programme, teaching courses, and social activities
you will not want to miss. Please mark your calendars. We look forward to welcoming you in Basel!
BASEL 2012: CURTAIN UP ON TRAUMATOLOGY AND EMERGENCY SURGERY AND – THE SPIRIT
OF BASEL/SWITZERLAND
Heim Dominik
Congress President
Babst Reto
Congress President
Grüezi, bonjour, buon giorno, bun di – welcome to Basel, city of the annual ESTES Congress 2012. Basel, the third biggest city of
Switzerland, invites you to take part in the 13 th European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. Basel is known the world over
for its richness in art and culture, for its river Rhine, for being the home of the pharmaceutical industry and for its university, the oldest
in Switzerland.
A congress is meant to be more than just a textbook, a congress is meant to be communication, a presentation of personal
opinions and personal results and a start to animated discussions about new findings and new solutions to everyday’s and
extraordinary problems. It is said that many ways lead to Rome and many ways (should) lead to the one goal – the cure of our
patients. Evidence is the word, eminence is the reality! Health systems are different all over Europe, medical perceptions are
different, but there is just this one goal: to treat our patients according to our standards, to our guidelines, our infrastructure and
our facilities at their best. ESTES is like Rome, a place to teach, to present and to demonstrate our possibilities to reach that goal
(“many ways – one goal” being our motto for this congress). Europe is diverse, that is, each one of us is living in his own world,
is working in his own world, is treating his patients in his own ways and all these ways are different. Let’s listen to these voices
from all over Europe, let’s reflect on our own ideas by being confronted with these worlds. Switzerland is in the centre of Europe,
is part of Europe (not in the political sense though) and is happy to share its ideas, its ideals and its spirit with Europe.
A congress is meant to be more than just a congress! A congress is embedded in its environment. And this environment is rich
in Basel. Basel would like to share its richness in culture, in humanism and in all its intellectual acumen with you. Let Basel
present you its gifts, its achievements, its efforts and its personality with fervour, with courage, with compassion and with
excitement. Immerse yourselves in this town, a town of its own, a town, where carneval is “the three most beautiful days of the
year”, a town, where people live for their football team, a town, where modern art, urban lifestyle and commerce meet. Meet Eliana
Burki, George Gruntz, Dieter Ammann, Coal, the Musica Fiorita and plenty of other musicians from Basel/Switzerland, meet the
Tinguely Museum, the Joggeli, the castle of Bottmingen and many other places. Engulfe yourself in this town at the knee bend
in the river Rhine during these four days of the ESTES Congress 2012.
Basel is just a short stop-over. The ESTES Congress will then move on along on its tour around Europe, just get a glimpse of
surgery, at trauma – and emergency surgery and at acute surgery, a surgical world yet to be established in Europe, - in Basel.
Basel will be a big feast, a thrilling party – don’t miss it, be there,– curtain up on Basel 2012!
Basel, located in Switzerland’s German-speaking region, lies on the banks of the River Rhine, in close proximity to Germany and
France. Capital of the Basel-Stadt canton, it is Switzerland’s second important business centre and its third most populous city
(180,000 inhabitants). Basel is home to one of Europe’s oldest universities as well as an innovative University of Applied Sciences.
