So why doesn't my urethra<br />

function properly?<br />

There are two primary reasons why the urethra tube fails to<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> its seal dur<strong>in</strong>g stress activity.The most common is<br />

poor support of the urethra normally provided by the<br />

underly<strong>in</strong>g muscle and connective tissue of the vag<strong>in</strong>a. Less<br />

commonly the urethral sph<strong>in</strong>cter could be deficient.<br />

One of the myths about SUI is that it is a natural part of the<br />

ag<strong>in</strong>g process. In reality, it can affect women at any age.<br />

And although common, SUI is not a normal part of ag<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The weaken<strong>in</strong>g of the pelvic floor, connective tissues and<br />

muscle can happen as a result of:<br />

• Pregnancy and childbirth<br />

• Chronic heavy lift<strong>in</strong>g or stra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Menopause or estrogen deficiency<br />

• Obesity<br />
