ADDITIONAL SUCCESSES AGAINST ORGANIZED CRIME<br />

On Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 8, 1982, John Cody, President of Local 282<br />

of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, was convicted<br />

of violat<strong>in</strong>g the federal racketeer<strong>in</strong>g statute and other crimes.<br />

Teamster Local 282 is the extremely powerful union <strong>that</strong><br />

represents drivers who deliver build<strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>to</strong> construction<br />

sites <strong>in</strong> New York City and Long Island. Cody is closely<br />

associated with several high echelon organized crime figures.<br />

He had used the union's pension fund <strong>to</strong> coduct a series of<br />

racketeer<strong>in</strong>g activities.<br />

On April 7, 1983, five defendants <strong>in</strong> Cleveland were sentenced<br />

fo particpat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a multi-million dollar narcotics traffick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

operation. The defendants were all members of the Cleveland<br />

LCN, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Angelo "Big Ange" Lonardo, underboss of the<br />

of the Cleveland LCN. (The alleged Godfather of the Cleveland<br />

LCN, James "Jack White" Licavoli, was convicted <strong>in</strong> the summer<br />

of 1982 for a 1977 car bomb murder.) The entire <strong>to</strong>p echelon<br />

of Cleveland's mafia has been convicted <strong>in</strong> the last year.<br />

Roy Williams, President of the International Brotherhood<br />

of Teamsters, was convicted of attempt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> bribe a United<br />

States Sena<strong>to</strong>r. Federal District Judge Marshall specifically<br />

upheld one of the Justice Department's ma<strong>in</strong> arguments <strong>that</strong><br />

the union was under the control of organized crime, largely<br />

through the activities of Allen M. Dorfman, a convicted<br />

codefendant shot <strong>to</strong> death on January 20. Also convicted,<br />

among others, was Joseph Lombardo, an officer <strong>in</strong> the Chicago<br />

mafia.<br />
