Australian rally driver Molly Taylor

has set her sights on a solid result

when she returns to World Rally

Championship competition in

England later this month.

The young Sydneysider is tackling

the famous Wales Rally GB with

British co-driver Sib Marshall in their

United Business/BP Racing Citroën

DS3 R3T.

The duo put in an excellent

performance in Neste Rally Finland,

leading their class with two stages to

run until they were forced to

abandon the fight for a podium

finish due to an electrical fault.

Now Molly and Sib are looking

forward to another run over the

roads of Wales Rally GB. It was here

last year that they took their first

stage win while competing in the

one-make WRC Academy series.

The team has scheduled a test day

before the event to allow Molly to

fine-tune the set-up of the Citroen

DS3 R3T before embarking on the

dirt roads through the Welsh forests.

www.drivermagazine.com.au

"I’m very excited to have the

opportunity to compete at Wales

Rally GB,” said Taylor.

“From all the WRC Academy events

we did last year, I have the best

memories of this event and it is

where we got our first WRC

Academy stage win.

“I have also done a few smaller

rallies around the same area, so

while the stages will be different, I

have a good idea of the nature of

Audi Clinches World Endurance

Championship

Audi has maintained its perfect

record at half-way stage of the 2012

FIA World Endurance Championship.

In an exciting battle of the hybrid

technology concepts, the Audi R18

e-tron quattro proved victorious in

the fourth race of the series, held at

Silverstone.

At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi

wrote history after taking victory

with a hybrid car for the first time,

now a second win has followed. At

both events Marcel Fässler/André

Lotterer/Benoît were at the wheel of

the victorious car with race number

‘1’.

Audi has proved again that it builds

the most efficient sportscars. During

the six hours of the race, Marcel

Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît

Tréluyer required only six pits stops

with their hybrid car, two less than

the second-placed Nicolas

Lapierre/Kazuki Nakajima/Alexander

Wurz who use another hybrid

concept.

The result is even more remarkable

because the triumphant Audi was

awarded a stop-and-go penalty by

the race director. The reason was

Benoît Tréluyer was involved in an

unfortunate accident with a GT car

just before the end of the first third

of the race. The car of the three Le

Mans winners lost 32 seconds as a

result, at the finish the winning

margin was still 55 seconds.

In addition to the fourth race victory,

Audi also has another reason to

celebrate as the brand from

Ingolstadt holds an unassailable lead

in the WEC Manufacturers’

Championship.

After four titles in the Rally World

Championship between 1982 and

1984, as well as victory in the FIA

Touring Car World Cup in 1995, Audi

has once again won another World

title.

In contrast, the excitement in the

drivers’ championship ramps up,

following a change of leaders. After

their second win,

Fässler/Lotterer/Tréluyer lead the

standings for the first time this

season. At the half-way stage they

hold a small 4.5 point lead over

recently announced a number of

ANCAP safety ratings for a range of

small to medium vehicles including

Australasia’s next electric-powered

car - the Holden Volt.

The latest five models to undergo

Not all of these vehicles received five

but the Suzuki Splash was the lowest

with a rating of four.

The Holden Volt, officially launched

in Australia last week, performed

well across all tests and includes

eight airbags (dual front, front side

and curtain airbags as well as knee

airbags for the driver and front

passenger), intelligent seat belt

reminders in all seating positions,

lane departure warning and forward

The Volt is the second electric

vehicle to be awarded ANCAP’s 5

2012 Mitsubishi Outlander VRX Test

& Review

By Jason Sharman

I think the stereotype “doof doof”

will have to be thrown out the

window, and in future I will have to

think twice about which car I will see

coming down the street when I hear

some bass off in the distance. Will it

be the local P plater with a 12 inch

sub hooked up in his 10 year old

lancer playing the latest Ministry of

Sound? Or is it the soccer mum from

up the street driving her 2012

Mitsubishi Outlander VRX cranking

the wiggles for the kids in the back?

You may wonder how I could

mistake the difference? The reason

is because the Outlander VRX is

fitted with a superb Rockford

Fostgate stereo system which

includes a nine speaker 710 Watt

system which could fool anyone into

thinking they should see the former.

The Mitsubishi Outlander VRX is a

pleasantly surprising car with many

options and gadgets to be found on

the inside. Outside you have a

design which looks like a Lancer with

a hunchback on steroids. This may

not sound appealing but it is actually

an aggressive and stylish design for

As ratings go we are always looking

they need to be strong.

The all-new Volvo V40 has proved its

Panda 4x4 to Debut in Paris

Fiat have released a new vehicle to

the A segment and with this release

it makes the Fiat Panda the only 4x4

in this class. The Panda 4x4 will be

making its debut at the forthcoming

international Paris Motor Show.

The successor to a bestseller which

first appeared almost 30 years ago,

today’s third-generation four-wheel

drive Panda is a perfect

interpretation of the spirit of the

times, proving itself able to unite

consolidated off-road capabilities

with a refined design and compact,

efficient architecture.

The Panda 4x4 is the superlative

expression of the model’s great

versatility, a genuine “Super Panda”,

ready to tackle mountain mule

tracks and the urban jungle with the

same cool.

www.drivermagazine.com.au 3 September 2012 Page 11

In addition to standard equipment

able to satisfy the most demanding

of customers, from a technical point

of view, the new Panda 4x4

improves itself once again and

reasserts its admirable capacity to

compete with off-road cars of much

greater dimensions (as well as much

higher prices).

With five doors, the car is 368

centimetres long, 167 centimetres

wide and 160 centimetres high. The

wheelbase is 230 centimetres long.

It has a front track of 141

centimetres and a rear track of 140.

For the look of the new Panda 4x4,

Fiat Centro Stile designers started

from the idea of consolidating its

purely functional design features,

adding small details that convey the

image of an extremely sophisticated

multifunctional mini SUV. Looks are

strongly characterised by the

marked geometric lines of the front

and rear bumpers with aluminium

colour cosmetic inserts to underline

the presence of metallic protection

under the body.

Unlike the previous generation, the

tailpipes of the new Panda 4x4

seamlessly follow the lines of the

body and ensure complete

protection for the lower part of the

car. Two body colours now

complement the existing colour

palette to enhance its 4x4 looks:

Sicilia orange (pastel) and Toscana

green (metallic).

The interiors pick up the solutions

adopted on 4x2 versions with some

important innovations: a new green

fascia variant framing the

instruments and the large storage

pocket, fabric seats with a special
