Brother Knights, Vivat Jesus! As I have begun my office as
Grand Knight of our fine Council, I have taken time to reflect on the
terrific job our Past Grand Knights Bob Allison, Fred Eccelstone,
Mark Vogel, and John Sgalia have done to get us to this point in our
history. Calendars, forms, submissions, meeting agendas, etc. are
all designed and well organized, making my job much easier. Our
experienced officers have been a reliable source of support and
efficiency as well.
I feel blessed to have all of you fine gentlemen behind the good works of our St Fabian
Council.
So far this term, since the last newsletter in May, we have sent delegates to the
State Convention on Mackinac Island, which was impressive and enjoyable, as
shown in the newsletter article. We also conducted a Blood Drive; worked two
Charity Poker events; participated in a US Flag retirement ceremony; and enjoyed a
terrific Council Picnic that served as a fond farewell to Fr. Brian, where many
Knights and families expressed warm regards and best wishes; I noticed that everyone
was having fun and there were smiles all around.
We also welcomed our new Pastor & Chaplain, Fr Jeff, with a formal Color Corp
reception, and the warmth of personal greetings by our parishioners at the pancake
breakfasts and receptions; enjoyed a Tigers game together; completed a Council
financial audit; attended the Tri-District meeting; and supported the Spiritual Book
Club’s baby gift collections.
All of these worthy causes and events are only possible with your hard work,
Brother Knights. Bravo! I am uplifted and look forward to my service as Grand
Knight, with pride and humility.

Chaplain, Fr. Jeff Day
Dear Brother Knights,
It truly is a joy to be a
brother Knight alongside all
of you, and to serve our
Council as Chaplain. I received
my First Degree
some 17 years ago, and made
my Fourth Degree five years ago.
I have never regretted joining the best Catholic
fraternal organization in the Church!
Although I miss my brother Knights at my
former Council of Fr. Patrick O’Kelley, I want
to thank you for welcoming me and the warm
reception you gave me soon after I arrived at
St. Fabian. Your hospitality was just wonderful,
and my family and I were most appreciative
of the wonderful food.
I also appreciate the work of your former
chaplain, Fr. Brian, for the great work he did
in helping to found and nurture the Council
over the years. How proud he must be to
know what an influential impact this Council
has on our parish, and on the local community.
It is amazing what a relatively small group of
men can do when we work together as Knights!
I look forward to being with you and serving
alongside of you for the years to come.
Let us do whatever we can to support our
Grand Knight, Mike Kennedy. As we enter
the fall and the pace of activities increases for
the Council and the parish as a whole, it is important
that we remember why we serve, and
Whom we serve. As the author of the Letter to
the Hebrews reminds us, we must continually
“keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and
perfecter of faith.”
With these words of scripture on our minds
and in our hearts, may we continue to joyfully
serve the Lord. God bless you all. Vivat Jesus!

Welcome to Fr. Jeff
St. Fabian K of C Council hosted
Pancake Breakfasts after every mass
on July 3rd so that parishioners
could meet our new Pastor, Fr. Jeff.
The Color Corp assisted at the 8 am
Mass to offer a Knights’ welcome to
our new Pastor and Chaplain, Fr. Jeff
Day.

comprehensive presentation
on the Fourth
Degree at the August
General Meeting,
A brief history, chalice, benefits, funeral
honor guard, color corps, tuxedo attire,
exemplification, assembly activities, and
other general information were addressed.
The next Exemplification is September
17th. The theme of the Fourth
Degree is Patriotism.
If interested in the Fourth Degree, please
contact Frank Ross or one of our council
members that is a Fourth Degree Knight.
Living Rosary Oct. 2nd
St. Fabian will host its 2nd Living Rosary
on October 2nd, 1:30 pm, at the parish
sports field.
Knights and parishioners will represent
each bead of the Rosary. 10 Color Corp
will serve as Guardsmen and 5 Knights
as Mystery Leaders. A very inspirational
service. Please join us.

State Convention at Mackinac Island May 2011
The convention was an exciting and full event, with activities
running almost constantly from 7:30 in the morning until
after 11:00 at night, including the hospitality suites.
The meetings were technically formal, as required, yet very
friendly and comfortable. The convention was fraternal in
nature. You could tell that may of the attendees had been
to the convention before and knew each other from other
District and Diocesan meetings. We felt very comfortable
and welcome.
There are over 300 councils in Michigan, about 200 were represented. All the Bishops of Michigan were present.
We met and had some brief discussions with our incoming pastor, Fr. Jeff Day, who is an avid supporter of the
Knights.
Some of the amazing memories of the event, beyond the pageantry, were the awards which were given to a number of
councils. Most of the recipient councils were not much different than our council. The awards mostly honored the fact
that the recipient Council cared about another Knight or family, and took the initiative and time to put on an event to
help someone in need.

St. Fabian Council 13362 - Financial Summary 2010 / 2011
The Council’s fiscal year 2010 / 2011 resulted
in our best year ever for the charitable initiatives
accomplished through the hard work of
our brother Knights and their families.
The Council’s net cash receipts from members
and fundraising netted a record $26,197!
Those came mostly from the extra charity
pokers we were allowed to have, netting 60%
of the revenues. The MI Drive collected
$11,391 for a total income of $37,588 for the
year.
The charitable initiatives included:
Community projects (most in the Farmington/Farmington
Hills area) of
contributions to St. Christine and St.
Alex food pantries, Coats for Kids,
Re-building Together, Adopt a Family
for Christmas.
Youth projects of the Free Throw and
Essay contests, financial support for
the School, CYO, and Youth group.
Vocations support both to Sacred Heart
Seminary directly and to several
seminarians.
Parish events from the blood drives, parish
picnic, and other events.
Right to Life activities quarterly and at
the state and national levels.
General charitable initiatives that are
State wide or national, including
Christmas in the Philippines, Michigan
Council Take 5 program, Supreme
Catholic Advertising, and
other projects.
Detailed financial information has been provided
at our General Meetings and is available
to any member by request.

Our new Chaplain and Pastor, Fr. Jeff Day, will be our speaker. He
has been a Knight for 17 years, earned his 4th Degree 5 years ago,
and is a strong supporter of the Knights of Columbus, as the “best
Catholic fraternal organization...”
Karen Jewell, of Another Way Pregnancy Center, will be our guest
speaker. Karen will share with us the history, mission, and changes
Another Way Pregnancy Center has gone through in the past year,
and the role of St. Fabian Council and parish.
Brother Knight Ryan Duns, a Jesuit Theology Teacher, will brief us
on his life as a Jesuit, and the curriculum and programs offered at
the U of D Jesuit High School.

Fr. Brian Chabala
Fr. Brian was the driving force behind the
creation of a K of C council at St. Fabian
Parish. Through his foresight and support,
Council 13362 was established as a men’s
fraternal organization that would help in both
supporting the parish and providing a men’s
group focused on faith, community, and charity.
Father’s support and encouragement has been an essential
element in the success and growth of the council. His legacy
and example will ensure continuity within the council.

Keith DeVore, Recorder Sec.
Keith DeVore is a brother Knight who is
always willing and eager to assist when
required. When the recent council picnic
was being planned, although it was no
longer his responsibility, Keith stepped
up to coordinate the pot luck donations
for the picnic as well as take on the task
of cooking all the burgers and dogs. His
leadership and participation went a long way to making the
annual council picnic the best one yet.

John Sgalia PGK
Over the past two years, our council has
continued to grow and flourish under the
leadership of GK John Sgalia. The council
took on the coordination of the annual
parish picnic, created the Confirmation
Crucifix program, established links with
St. Coleman parish, increased the focus
on Right to Life, and drove further support
for vocations by expanding the number of seminarians
supported. Council 13362 has continued a record of success
under John’s leadership.

Sir Bob Allison PGK
When the council started in 2003, the
first hurdle was the creation of a leadership
team. Bob Allison volunteered to
take on that task. It was through Bob
and Suzann Allison’s example that
helped the council succeed in those early
years. Ever since, Bob and Suzann have
continued to provide an ongoing example of what being a family
in the Knights of Columbus means. Bob has continued to
be a very active and supportive Past Grand Knight.

Hugh Caverly
One of the essential tasks prior to the regular
pancake breakfasts sponsored by the St. Fabian
Council 13362 Knights of Columbus is
picking up the supplies required for a successful
event. Hugh Caverly has been a
brother Knight who consistently offers to
take on this task. Hugh has done this quietly
and efficiently. His willingness to assist has smoothed the
planning of the events and simplified the overall process.

John Goshorn
Our council has concentrated much of
its attention on Charity and Youth.
Over the years, John Goshorn has
been a leader in supporting both focus
areas. His involvement in Rebuilding
Together and the annual parish Youth
Group Appalachia trip highlight his
dedication and support of youth, community, and charity.
John could not be so involved it not for the support and encouragement
of his wife, Regina. John and Regina Goshorn
have annually made it a very high priority.
Knight of the Year
Sir Adrian VanBourgondien, Trustee
Adrian is among the first to volunteer to help with any of the council’s many charitable
causes. He initiates and organizes the annual mass and reception to honor the members of
the Military in the parish. This year he took charge of the new Baby Bottle drive, and made
it into a huge success. He is also a very active participant in the Charity Poker, Housing the
Homeless, Youth Free Throw, MI Drive, Youth Essay reviews, and other council activities.

Congratulations to our Officers!! particularly the newly elected Officers,

The Officers were officially installed in a ceremony following the 5 pm mass on Saturday,
August 27th, assisted by the 4th Degree Color Corp.
Family, friends, and Brother Knights enjoyed a dinner following the ceremony, with
District Deputy Bill McKeever and Chaplain Fr. Jeff in the Social Hall.

one special person that I truly look up to is my
mother. God blessed me with a mother who has
qualities that I would like to have as I grow and mature.
She continues to affect me in a way that

to the Lord, extraordinarily loving towards others,
