Welcome from Our Executive Director

October 17, 2010

Dear Attendees,

On behalf of the Reuse Alliance Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for joining us

at ReuseConex, the 1st National Reuse Conference & Expo. As a national nonprofit

dedicated to increasing awareness of reuse, Reuse Alliance is proud to host this groundbreaking

event that has brought together such a unique, innovative and diverse community of

individuals and organizations.

During the course of the conference you will learn first-hand how reuse saves energy,

reduces GHG emissions, conserves resources, provides quality goods to those with limited

means, creates green-collar jobs, and offers tax benefits and revenues which contribute to

our local economies.

Our goal with ReuseConex was to create an environment where we can further explore

these triple bottom line benefits of reuse, while building a foundation that will help bring

reuse into the mainstream. We hope we have achieved this. We also hope you find the

conference sessions and activities to be informative and enjoyable; and that by the end of this

event you have made some excellent connections and learned valuable skills you can use on

a daily basis.

We would like to express our gratitude to each and every one of our speakers, moderators,

and exhibitors for sharing their wisdom and exciting ideas and services. We would also

like to thank the members of our Conference Planning Committee for their guidance and

support, and our silent auction donors for their generosity.

Finally, our thanks also go out to all of our attendees – reuse practitioners, advocates, and

every-day reusers. You are the reuse movement. By choosing to reuse you are helping to

create a cleaner environment, a greener economy, and a more creative and compassionate

society. Without your interest and support this conference and our work thus far, could

never have been realized. I encourage you to join our efforts to build a stronger reuse

movement by becoming a Reuse Alliance member.

Enjoy ReuseConex, and be sure to join us for future activities!

Sincerely,

MaryEllen Etienne

1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse

Our Keynote Speaker

Keynote Address:

When Garth Johnson set out to

write the introduction to his book,

1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse,

he figured that he could write a

brief essay that covered creative

reuse by other cultures throughout

history. When he started to

dig deeper, he found that almost

every other culture has embraced reuse, and that our culture is the

one that is out of step. From the Neolithic era onward, objects and

building materials have been reused in innovative and surprising

ways.

His address will provide a brief look back at how the Ancient

Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, early Christians and Non-Western

cultures reused the materials they had available to them.

Biography:

Garth Johnson is a studio artist, writer and educator who lives in

Eureka, California. Garth’s writing has been featured in museum

catalogs, magazines and books worldwide. His first book, 1000 Ideas

for Creative Reuse was released in by Quarry/Rockport publishers

and his DVD, ReVision: Recycled Crafts for Earth-Friendly Living was

released by Eyekiss Films last year.

His artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including

a 2009 solo show at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia and an upcoming

solo exhibition at Brenau University. He has taught at Georgia State

University, Columbus State University and is currently a professor

at College of the Redwoods in Eureka. In addition to teaching, he

is a sought-after lecturer and visiting artist, with recent lectures at

Ohio State, Virginia Commonwealth, The Tyler School of Art and the

Pottery Studio in Jingdezhen, China.

Our ReFashion Show Producers

ReDress Raleigh

Produces eco-conscious fashion shows

which showcase designers who either use

reclaimed and organic materials in their

designs. The shows prove you can be green

in all aspects of life, including in your fashion.

North Carolina State University

The students of the Colleges of Design and

Textiles participate in annual fashion show,

called Art to Wear, that features a variety of

upcycling designers.

Goodwill Industries of Central NC

Promotes the value of work through the provision

of work opportunities for people with

special employment needs. They meet their

mission through their retail reuse operations,

and promote reuse through a newly-launched

annual Fashion Show.

Our Film Screening

No Impact Man

Colin Beavan, a newly self-proclaimed environmentalist who could no

longer avoid pointing the finger at himself, leaves behind his liberal

complacency and vows to make as little environmental impact as possible

for one year. No more automated transportation, no more electricity,

no more non-local food, no more consumption - no problem.

That is, until his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife, Michelle,

and their two year-old daughter are dragged into it.

What began as one man’s experiment quickly becomes an experiment

in how much one woman is willing to sacrifice for her husband’s

dreams. The film provides both a front-row seat into the experiment

that became a national fascination, and a behind-the-scenes look at

the challenges that result from their radical lifestyle change.
