Making History

P.3

Mont-Blanc and the valley of Chamonix... are above

and beyond one’s wildest expectations. I cannot

imagine anything in nature more stupendous or sublime.

Charles Dickens

MAKING HISTORY

Chamonix, the cradle of

Alpinism, glaciology and

skiing, is a truly extraordinary

place where technology and

pastoralism, contemplation and

wild passion, art and science go

hand in hand.

Nowhere else is there such a

diversity of peaks, needles,

pyramids, mounts and glaciers,

or such a succession of

prairies, forests, grassland,

sheer rock, ice and everlasting

snow…

In this unique site, human

passions, sublimated by

Mont-Blanc, have converted

this former Priory (le Prieuré)

into one of the world’s most

renowned resorts.

Housed in the

historic Chamonix

Palace, the Musée

Alpin retrace two

centuries of life in

the valley through

an extensive and

beautiful collection

01 THE TOP

OF EUROPE

Chamonix Mont-Blanc is

located at the foot of

Mont-Blanc, Europe’s highest

Chamonix is a mountain

community of 10,000

Savoyard lifestyle; festivals and

holiday celebrations take place

throughout the season. The

annual “Fête des Guides” on the

15th of August is by far the most

popular event. There are 14 bars,

80 restaurants, 100 shops and 7

discotheques making Chamonix

Located between Lake Geneva

and the Mediterranean,

Chamonix Mont-Blanc is not

only a destination but an

ideal stopover on a travel

programme to relax and admire

the breathtaking scenery. Late

spring or early autumn are

perfect seasons to take in the

Glace, France’s largest glacier,

while riding the red cog wheel

train of Montenvers, is one of

the most popular attractions.

Not to be missed is the Aiguille

de Midi cablecar, the highest

in the world, as it climbs to an

altitude of 3,842 m (12,605 ft)

for incredible closeup views of

the world of rock and ice that

make up the Mont-Blanc.

...The next best thing to

climbing the mountain!

04 SPORTS,

CULTURE

AND LEISURE

ACTIVITIES

(RAIN OR SHINE)

More than 46 different sports

are practiced in the Chamonix

valley during the summer

season including hiking,

pool complex with water-slide

and fi tness centre (saunas,

culturally historic and artistic

dimension.

05 TEEING OFF

Robert Trent Jones Senior

with incomparable scenery.

On the grounds are a pro shop

Chamonix valley round-up

P.9

For more than 200 years, Chamonix Mont-Blanc

has been a popular destination for international

travellers attracted to the exceptional sightseeing

possibilities. A variety of lifts, cablecars and

mountain trains allow the visitor to intimately

experience the alpine beauty of the valley.

CHAMONIX VALLEY ROUND-UP

A VARIETY OF STARTING POINTS

The Mont-Blanc Tramway, the Montenvers

train, the cable cars of the Brévent,

Flégère, Le Tour, Grands Montets and

Aiguille du Midi... all of these lifts allow

access to the starting points of a wide

range of walks and hikes. Quickly and with

ease, the lift system in the Chamonix valley

enables the hiker/visitor to reach a unique

alpine environment of shaded forests,

scintillating glaciers, alpine meadows

and dramatic peaks. All these elements

- plus the crisp mountain air - make up

a true “nature” experience.

CHAMONIX VALLEY ROUND-UP

DIZZYING HEIGHTS

Known as the world capital of mountaineering, the Chamonix valley

offers fantastic high mountain terrain both inviting for the beginner as

well as challenging for the expert. Mountaineering tours and outings are

scheduled from June to September. Introductory lessons and initiation

courses are available throughout the entire summer season.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Hiking in the company of a

glaciologist to discover the

life and characteristics of the

Argentière glacier from Lognan to

the Grand Montets. Conferences,

films and excursions. No

mountaineering experience

required; ideal for families.

HIKING: NATURE AT ALL LEVELS

The Chamonix valley maintains

330 km of marked trails offering

a variety of hikes designed to

satisfy ramblers of all levels.

Day excursions, overnight hikes,

week-long treks...

Pleasant walks past picturesque

hamlets and along alpine lakes

or strenuous ascensions up

breathtaking mountain passes...

There is a nature hike for all

levels that can be done

alone or accompanied.

Over the past 40 years, all

land above 2,000 m has been

classified as a nature reserve and

consequently protected. Do not

miss our many and incredible

mountain lakes.

TWO MOST FAMOUS SIGHTS

www.compagniedumontblanc.fr

1 THE AIGUILLE DU MIDI. 2 THE MONTENVERS/LA MER DE GLACE

The Aiguille du Midi cable car is

located in the centre of Chamonix.

The first section takes visitors

to the Plan de l’Aiguille station

at 2,317 m. The second section

goes to the top station and the

summit of the Aiguille at 3,842 m.

From here, an unforgettable view

of the Mont-Blanc range unfolds

all around. On a clear day, it is

possible to see the Monte Rosa,

the Grand Combin and even the

Matterhorn!

Only in Chamonix can you go so

high - and for such a view in only

20 minutes !

In the summer, it’s a favourite

pastime to watch and admire

technical rock climbers make

their way up the south face of

the Aiguille du Midi while rugged

mountaineers can be spotted

reaching the summit from the icy

north face. Italy can be reached

by taking a gondola which soars

over the Valley Blanche glacier

for more than 5 km, arriving at

the Helbronner cable car. A cable

car change takes visitors down

to Courmayeur. (The gondola trip

lasts 40 minutes, traversing only

in optimum weather.) .

An exceptional sightseeing

excursion on the nostalgic red

cog railway of Montenvers takes

visitors directly up to the Mer de

Glace glacier - meaning “sea of

ice”. Located at 1,913 m, the Mer

de Glace is 7 km long and 200 m

thick with a surface dimension of

40 km 2 . Also worth visiting is the

crystal gallery, a wildlife exhibition,

an ice garden and the famous

ice grotto carefully carved each

year into the heart of the glacier

(100 m long). Access to the grotto

is by small gondolas departing

from the station platform (arrival

in less than 5 minutes).

Good to know: The Montenvers

station is located directly in the

centre of town. Train departure

every 20 minutes in high season

and every 30 minutes in low

season. Closed mid-November to

mid-December. Duration of a oneway

trip is 20 minutes for 5,5 km.

Both the Plan de l’Aiguille (1st

station on the Aiguille du Midi lift)

and the Mer de Glace are excellent

departure points for many of the

marked trails and high mountain

routes located in this part of the

valley.

Chamonix Mont-Blanc is one of the twelve resorts in the international Best of the Alps network.

They all share a respect for traditions, the environment and a constant striving for quality.

They are the Alps “classic” resorts. Each one represents a piece of winter sports history.
