The Robert S. Folsom Leadership 

Award dinner honoring First Lady Laura 

Bush raised $1.3 million to launch the 

Read to Me and Life Shines Bright 

pregnancy programs at the Golden Cross 

Academic Clinic and to support the 

neonatal intensive care unit at Methodist 

Dallas Medical Center. 

Additional major gifts to the 

Foundation also supported the Methodist 

Dallas NICU and the special care nursery 

at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center 

and provided increased breast cancer 

education and outreach.

More than 1,000 patrons and guests filled the Hilton Anatole Grand 

Ballroom for the 2008 Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award 

celebration honoring Mrs. Laura Bush. This year’s event more than 

doubled the number of major donors, blessing Methodist Health 

System with an unprecedented $1.3 million to support three special 

programs in women’s and children’s health and outreach services, 

including the Read to Me and Life Shines Bright Pregnancy 

Programs at the Golden Cross Academic Clinic, as well as the 

neonatal intensive care unit at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

and around the world, Laura Welch Bush 

has effectively used her leadership and

States and a former Texas First Lady to 

make a difference in the lives of 

thousands of women and children. 

Drawn from her involvement as a career 

who spent their first weeks of life in a 

neonatal intensive care unit, Mrs. Bush 

is deeply committed to improving 

women and children’s health, literacy, 

and education. She is particularly 

passionate about advancing the 

importance and pleasures of reading, 

and Ready to Read. Mrs. Bush is also an 

advocate for breast cancer and 

Alzheimer’s disease awareness and 

research. Her compassionate leadership 

and selfless service have made a 

profound impact on our world and 

exemplify the qualities of a Robert S. 

“The gift to the Read to Me program will have a significant impact 

on improving literacy for the populations we serve. With the 

increasing number of teen pregnancies and illiteracy, the Read to 

Me program will help parents understand the importance of 

reading to a child. If a child can read, he can be more successful 

in life,” said Candy Chilcote, director of the Golden Cross 

Academic Clinic.

a copy of the children’s book, Read All 

About It, coauthored by Mrs. Bush and her

Reflecting the First Lady’s commitment 

to improve the health and literacy 

of all women and children, this year’s 

Folsom event is funding three special 

programs at Methodist: 

The Read to Me Program provides teen 

parents and other moms with books and 

educational materials, hands-on activities, 

and supervised practice sessions to 

highlight the importance of reading to 

improve literacy, parent-child 

relationships, and social outcomes. 

The Life Shines Bright pregnancy 

program provides prenatal health care and 

preventive education for high-risk 

minority patients at Methodist’s Golden 

Cross Academic Clinic. 

The nationally recognized Neonatal 

Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Methodist 

Dallas Medical Center, where 95 percent 

of newborns as young as 25 weeks 

survive, cares for more than 700 at-risk 

infants each year.

The Robert S. Folsom Leadership 

Award was established in 2005 and is 

presented by Methodist Health System 

Foundation to recognize individuals whose 

demonstrated commitment and excellence 

in community leadership emulates the 

achievements of Robert S. Folsom, the first 

award honoree. Recipients of the award 

are selected for their accomplishments in 

making a lasting, positive change in the 

Dallas community and inspiring others to

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit 

Methodist Health System is the only 

health system serving southwestern 

Dallas County, an area with a largely 

disadvantaged population and a 

disproportional higher risk of preterm 

births. The nationally recognized 

Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit 

(NICU) at Methodist Dallas 

Medical Center, where 95 percent of 

the infants born as young as 25 weeks 

survive, also serves as a regional 

referral center for high-risk infants. The 

hospital continually seeks to improve 

technologies and equipment to 

provide quality care to 750 fragile 

newborns annually.

We deeply appreciate the generous 

donations to the NICU and women’s 

services programs through the Robert 

S. Folsom Leadership Award dinner 

and other gifts to the Methodist Health 

System Foundation. 

The E. V. Brown Memorial Golf 

Tournament was established 

in honor of the first president of 

Austin Commercial to benefit 

the health care needs of 

children, a cause to which Mr. 

Brown was devoted. Methodist 

Health System has been one 

of the beneficiaries of the event 

for the past two years. More 

than 400 construction industry 

participants joined in the 11th 

annual event held in September 

2007, raising $25,500 for the 

NICU at Methodist Dallas 

Medical Center. 

“Austin Commercial has had a 

relationship with Methodist 

Health System dating back to 

the late 1980s. We are fortunate 

to be part of changes that have 

happened at the main campus 

and Methodist Charlton Medical 

Center as well. It’s great that we 

have an opportunity to support 

the hospitals,” said Brad Brown, 

tournament chair and marketing 

manager at Austin Commercial. 

The Lupe Murchison 

Foundation supports charitable 

causes benefiting the Dallas 

community. The foundation was 

established a few years ago 

from the estate of Lupe 

Murchison, widow of John D. 

Murchison, a former co-owner 

of the Dallas Cowboys, 

remembering the couple’s active 

support for civic and cultural 

needs. The foundation

and now boasts a survival rate 

nearly twice the national average.

the Junior League of Dallas, 

$25,000 from the Methodist 

Hospitals of Dallas Guild, and 

$25,000 from the T. Boone 

Pickens Foundation.

The growing community of Mansfield has showered Methodist Mansfield Medical 

Center with outstanding support since the opening of the hospital, which began its 

second year of operation in December 2007. The generosity of Mansfield 

supporters is helping to ensure the hospital’s special care nursery is equipped to 

provide quality care to the area’s newest and most fragile residents. 

The Methodist Mansfield 

Auxiliary has quickly grown to about 

150 volunteers who man the information desk, 

assist patients, visitors, and staff, and support 

the hospital through gift shop sales and their 

annual Holly Days sale. Auxiliary President 

Pat Miller presented a $15,000 gift to Laura 

Irvine, Methodist Mansfield president, at the 

Auxiliary’s board appreciation luncheon. This 

is the second consecutive year the Auxiliary 

has donated to the hospital. 

“We are thrilled to be associated with the 

hospital here in Mansfield,” said Miller. “Our 

members have worked very hard in fundraising 

activities and will continue to enhance 

the services provided by the hospital.”

The Mansfield Women’s Club 

has supported community causes with 

contributions from its annual Yellow Rose Charity 

Fest fund-raiser since 1997. For the second 

year in a row, the organization’s approximately 

130 members have selected Methodist 

Mansfield Medical Center as a beneficiary. Their 

$30,000 contribution in 2008 brings the club’s 

total gift to more than $60,000 for the purchase 

of equipment for the special care nursery. 

“The hospital has not only provided absolutely 

first-quality health care to this community, it 

has saved people from having to drive 25 to 30 

miles into Fort Worth, Arlington, or Dallas to see 

a doctor. People are very happy with Methodist 

Mansfield and their experience with the 

hospital,” said Marilyn Gerloff, past president

Beginning to 

End-of-Life Care 

Raising funds through their annual 

poinsettia sale, spring style show 

luncheon, and jewelry sale, the 

Methodist Hospitals of Dallas Guild 

donated $54,500 to support 

various programs at Methodist 

Health System. The NICU at 

Methodist Dallas Medical Center 

and the Palliative and Supportive 

Care program at Methodist Charlton 

Medical Center each received 

$25,000. The remainder went to 

support other departments. 

“We are very big on children, and 

the NICU is a recognized and 

award-winning program. How could 

we not support it? And palliative 

care is such a worthy endeavor. 

Most of us knew people and had 

family members in and out of the 

hospital that just needed a little 

extra something to keep their 

spirits up,” said Ruth Seib, past 

president of Methodist Hospitals of 

Dallas Guild. 

“The Palliative and Supportive Care 

program focuses on supporting 

patients and families throughout the 

continuum of their illness. The 

emphasis is on good symptom 

management, providing education to 

patients and family about the 

disease process, emotional and 

spiritual support, and help to plan 

going forward,” said Kristi M. Griffith 

RN, BSN, CHPN, manager of Palliative 

Care at Methodist Charlton. “We are 

grateful to the Guild for their 

generous donation. Those funds will 

be used for our comfort-care 

initiative and to start our No One 

Dies Alone program.” 

Comfort carts will be stocked with a 

variety of items such as CD players, 

inspirational books and music, 

information on grief and 

bereavement, and comfort items for 

patients such as handmade quilts 

and lotions. The No One Dies Alone 

program will provide volunteers to 

sit at the bedside of patients and 

assist and support families holding

Breast Cancer Outreach 

Promoting Education 

and Early Detection 

An estimated 182,460 women will be 

diagnosed with breast cancer in 

2008. Early detection and treatment 

is the key to their survival. By 

providing education, screening, and 

diagnostic services on a low- or nocost 

basis through the Methodist 

Dallas Medical Center Women’s 

Imaging Center and the Golden Cross 

Academic Clinic, Methodist is 

fulfilling our commitment to provide 

quality care for all members of our 

community. Supporting our work are 

two influential partners in the 

movement to improve breast health 

education and early detection. 

The Dallas County Affiliate of 

Susan G. Komen for the Cure 

has supported Methodist Health 

System’s breast cancer outreach 

for eight consecutive years. 

This year we received their 

largest gift to date. The 

$359,621 grant has allowed 

Methodist to expand the 

mammography program to 

increase education, the number 

of screenings sites on the mobile 

van, and diagnostic services 

at the Golden Cross Academic 

Clinic for women in need. 

“The gift funded about 1,150 

screenings and initial outpatient 

services for women who tested 

positive and needed further 

diagnosis or treatment,” said

Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for 

the Cure executive director.

Patterson Pledge 

Rev. Dr. Sheron Patterson, senior 

pastor of Highland Hills United 

Methodist Church in Dallas and a 

Methodist Health System board 

member, is nationally recognized 

for her numerous books that 

document her expertise in the 

area of Christian relationships. She is also a breast 

cancer survivor. From her experience emerged the 

Patterson Pledge: a challenge to women to take 

better care of themselves by getting annual 

mammograms, doing monthly breast self-exams, 

eating healthy meals, exercising regularly, and 

keeping the mind filled with positive thoughts. 

Methodist Health System has partnered with Dr. 

Patterson for education and prevention outreach, 

supporting her challenge by offering tools and 

resources that will help women be successful in 

keeping their pledge. 

“My breast cancer was detected early because I 

chose to get tested regularly – a decision that may 

very well have saved my life,” says Dr. Patterson. 

“Even after coming to terms with my illness, I 

chose to think positively about it, asking myself how 

I could use this experience to 

benefit others.” 

Methodist Health System has partnered with Rev. Dr. Sheron 

Patterson to promote the Patterson Pledge: a challenge to 

women to take better care of themselves by getting annual 

mammograms, doing monthly breast self-exams, eating healthy 

meals, exercising regularly, and keeping the mind filled with 

positive thoughts.

Methodist Dallas Medical Center Auxiliary 

The Methodist Dallas Medical 

Center Auxiliary has supported 

Methodist’s special funding 

needs for 84 years, and 

volunteers have contributed 

more than 7,000 hours. Through 

gift shop sales and fund-raising 

activities including the annual 

spring hat sale and style show, 

members gave over $102,000 this 

year to upgrade Methodist 

equipment and expand services. 

The gift allocated $35,000 

for the purchase of a BARRX 

Medical HALO Ablation System, 

making Methodist Dallas one of 

the first hospitals in Dallas and 

the only one in southwest 

Dallas County with the new 

technology. The BARRX system 

is used to treat patients with 

Barrett’s esophagus to help 

prevent esophageal cancer. 

Also included in the gift was 

$45,000 to upgrade equipment 

at the Women’s Imaging Center. 

The funds will be used toward 

the purchase of a transducer to 

diagnose breast cancer without 

the use of a needle biopsy. 

“The new technology upgrade 

will increase the diagnostic 

confidence of the radiologist in 

determining whether or not a

said Scott Cummins, director of 

radiology at Methodist Dallas. 

“In some cases this helps 

eliminate the anxious waiting 

period between a woman’s 

mammogram and additional 

diagnostic procedures.” 

“As we spoke with hospital 

administrators to determine 

the areas of greatest need, 

these services were identified 

essential to improving 

quality of life for patients,” 

said Nancy Buchtel, president 

of the Methodist Dallas 

Auxiliary. “It is with extreme

Improving Lives 

Young and Old 

Junior League of Dallas volunteers enjoy serving as 

“NICU cuddlers,” specially trained to handle 

fragile infants and provide the nurturing touch vital 

to infant development. 

In addition the organization has dedicated part 

of its fund-raising efforts to ensure Methodist Dallas 

Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit 

has the equipment needed to care for the tiniest 

patients. This year they gave $30,000 for the 

purchase of a vein finder. The new technology 

makes it easier for clinicians to locate the 

hard-to-find, delicate veins of tiny newborns. 

In total over the past several years, the Junior 

League has given $106,000 to support the NICU. 

Last year they expanded their involvement, 

supporting a comprehensive free memory screening 

and health and educational seminar in partnership 

with the Methodist Senior Access program.

The Methodist Dallas Medical 

Center Golden Cross Academic 

Clinic continues to grow in 

service to the community, 

expanding and integrating new 

programs for the holistic care 

of patients through the support 

of generous donors and the 

North Texas Conference of the 

United Methodist Church. 

Two new programs introduced 

this year will strengthen the 

outreach and enable this health 

ministry to reach even more 

patients in need. 

One such program is assisting 

seniors, youth, parents, and 

young families by strengthening 

the health care ministry within 

Methodist parishes. Through the 

Golden Cross Congregational 

Health Ministry, specially trained 

registered nurses focus on 

the health and wellness of their 

parish. Serving as health 

counselors, health educators, 

health advocates, and referral 

agents for the Golden Cross 

ministry, the outreach nurses 

are providing access to services 

such as preventive health 

screenings, grief and loss 

counseling, and chronic disease 

management for those in need. 

The area around southwest 

Dallas County has one of the 

highest rates of preterm births 

in the state. The Life Shines 

Bright pregnancy program, 

modeled on the March of Dimes 

group prenatal care pilot 

program, uses community 

outreach to identify women at 

risk for preterm birth 

and provides prenatal care, 

education, and medical services 

through the Golden Cross 

Academic Clinic to lower the 

incidents of preterm births. The 

March of Dimes Texas Chapter 

provided a $5,000 start-up 

grant to initiate the program. 

Funding from the 2008 

Folsom Award will ensure that 

the Life Shines Bright 

pregnancy program and Read 

to Me, the counterpart 

program to encourage reading 

and improve parents’ health 

literacy, are equipped with the 

clinic space and educational 

materials needed.

gynecology, internal medicine, 

and general surgery, while 

providing quality medical care 

for disadvantaged families.

The Rankin and Margaret 

Bennett Hinds Endowment Fund 

was established by Margaret 

Hinds to honor her nephew, 

Dr. William Bennett, a retired 

surgeon who served on the 

medical staff at Methodist Health 

System for 44 years. She

before her passing in October 

2007, and the home’s sale netted 

$116,426 to support the needs of 

Methodist. A trust was set up to 

allow family members and others

the Family Practice Residency 

program at Methodist in 

conjunction with the University 

of Texas Southwestern Medical 

School in the late 1970s. For 

four years Dr. Crawford headed 

the program and served on 

the faculty before resuming a 

private practice in Cedar Hill.

The Sammons Dallas Foundation was established 

for the benefit of a number of charitable organizations 

serving the community. Methodist Health System 

Foundation has been an appreciative recipient of annual 

gifts from Sammons since 1984. One of our largest 

supporters, Sammons Dallas has committed more than 

$1.1 million in total to our equipment fund. Their latest 

gift of $100,000 helped to purchase new blood 

irradiation equipment. Methodist Health System 

Foundation is grateful for and proud of our long-standing 

relationship with Sammons Dallas Foundation. 

“We have a very good relationship with Methodist Health 

System, and our gifts are always designated for 

something the hospital needs at the time,” said Vester 

Hughes, a trustee of the Sammons Dallas Foundation.

Cherié James, a nurse at Methodist Charlton 

Medical Center, was sympathetic to the plight of 

her coworker Shannyn Walker, a clinical nurse 

supervisor at Methodist Charlton. Shannyn’s 

two-year-old daughter, Shaelyn, born with 

biliary artesia, was on the liver transplant list 

in Houston, Texas. When Shannyn received the 

call that there was an organ match for Shaelyn, 

the family faced the additional burden of 

expenses for transportation, food, and lodging. 

The transplant 

required that the 

family stay in 

Houston for 30 

days to make 

sure Shaelyn was 

stable before 

Cherié James and Shannyn Walker returning home. 

“When you are living in a hospital and a 

hotel for that many days the money adds up 

quickly,” said Shannyn, “not to mention all the 

new prescriptions Shaelyn was starting.” 

Cherié placed an application for assistance 

from the BEN Fund on Shannyn’s behalf to help 

the family with temporary housing and 

expenses after their daughter’s transplant. The 

BEN (Basic Employee Needs) Fund provides 

one-time emergency financial assistance to 

Methodist Health System employees who are in 

short-term financial crisis. The fund is 

supported through the generous contributions 

of employees, staff members, and friends of 

Methodist. 

“If it were not for Cherié and the BEN Fund, 

I would not have made it through this situation 

as calmly as I did,” said Shannyn. “Cherié and 

the staff at Methodist Charlton have been a 

true blessing in so many ways.”
