OPERA THEATRE OF SAINT LOUIS MISSION To communicate the power
and beauty of live opera to audiences of all ages and experiences by
presenting world-class productions in a festival format. To build a vibrant
future for opera and serve our community through professional development
and community education programs. To strengthen the cultural and economic
vitality of our region.

A MESSAGE FROM
THE GENERAL DIRECTOR
A MESSAGE FROM
THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
The Wells Fargo Advisors 2010 season’s lineup of brilliant singers
It is a privilege once again to present this report as chairman.
and varied repertoire, including Opera Theatre’s 22nd world
First and foremost I want to recognize the heroic efforts of Opera
premiere, brought in new audiences in record numbers. Nearly a
Theatre’s staff and leadership to deliver a balanced budget for the
third of performances sold at more than 100%, and 22% of the
2010 fiscal year. This is always an incredible feat, but managing
audience discovered Opera Theatre for the first time this year.
it, given the challenges of the current economic climate, is truly
It is a joy to thank OTSL’s artists, staff, board members, volunteers,
extraordinary.
"Nearly a third of
performances
sold at more
than 100%,
and 22% of
the audience
discovered
Opera Theatre
for the first
time this year."
and generous friends for making these accomplishments possible,
while also ensuring that we upheld OTSL’s tradition of ending “in
the black,” despite a challenging economic environment.
Building an ever-broader and more diverse audience was a key
goal of Opera Theatre’s 2009 strategic plan. The world premiere
of The Golden Ticket brought international acclaim as well
as unusual numbers of families and children into our theater.
Famed designer Isaac Mizrahi’s new production of A Little Night
Music was also a hit with critics, OTSL regulars, and newcomers
alike, reaching sales of 101% of capacity for its run. For a Mozart
enthusiast like me, it was especially wonderful to sit amid sold-out
crowds for The Marriage of Figaro, and I know that many of us
will never forget the haunting and heartbreaking performances in
this season's production of Eugene Onegin.
In keeping with OTSL's commitment to responsible business
practices, we continue to support the future of our company by
investing for the long term. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of
our contributors, our endowment has grown 13%, from 16.6 million
in 2008 to 18.7 million in 2010. Total annual fundraising increased
by 6% in FY09 and grew an additional 6% in FY10.
A significant boon was having Wells Fargo Advisors sign on as
the presenting sponsor for both the 2010 season and the Spring
Gala. Thanks to their support and to the generosity of our host,
Centene Corporation, coupled with the singular efforts of cochairs
Donna Wilkinson and Carol Walker, the 2010 Spring Gala
generated the highest-ever net revenue for the annual fund,
raising more than $700,000 to mark OTSL’s 35th anniversary.
"Thanks to
the unfailing
generosity of
our contributors,
our endowment
has grown
13%, from $16.6
million in 2008
to $18.7 million
in 2010."
The vision and artistry of Opera Theatre’s music director Stephen
Lord and artistic director James Robinson are responsible
for imagining seasons like this one, but the inspiring dedication
of the entire OTSL family is what makes them a reality. As we
look to a future of thrilling challenges and opportunities, I cannot
thank you enough.
Timothy O’Leary
General Director, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis
Perhaps the most significant event of 2010 in terms of securing
OTSL’s financial future was the $2 million gift from the Mabel Dorn
Reeder Foundation, the largest single contribution that OTSL has
received in its 35-year history. This amazing gift, along with the
generous contributions of so many others, highlights once again
Opera Theatre’s importance in the cultural life of the St. Louis
community. I am honored to be a part of this organization.
“Isaac Mizrahi shows a designer’s
worked, endearingly, abetted
by a fine cast … In no Broadway
GROWING AUDIENCES
AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
R Successful marketing included a re-imagined Young Friends
program, new social networking campaigns on Facebook and
Twitter, and a new “family pricing” program which helped build
audiences for The Golden Ticket. Eight performances sold at
100% or better, including opening night of The Golden Ticket and
the first non-subscription performance of The Marriage of Figaro.
R OTSL entered new collaborative partnerships with sectors of
the community including The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts,
Cabaret St. Louis, The Saint Louis County Public Library, Left
Bank Books, and others. Events ranged from an experimental
performance art collaboration at the Pulitzer featuring soprano
Christine Brewer and visual artist Ann Hamilton, to a new cabaret
series at the Kranzberg Arts Center, to all the Artists-in-Residence
performances and recitals that showcased exciting young talent
across the St. Louis area.
Contributed
operating support
increased
by more than
6% over the
prior year and
has risen 12%
since 2008.
R New audience development strategies resulted in a 5.5%
increase in total attendance since the start of the strategic plan
in 2008. In 2010 the total audience reached 90% of capacity.
15% of the audience was new to Opera Theatre in 2009, rising
to 22% in 2010.
R Contributed operating support increased by more than 6%
over the prior year and has risen 12% since 2008. Opera Theatre
also announced the largest-ever single contribution that the
company has received in its 35 year history – a $2 million gift
from the Mabel Dorn Reeder Foundation to help endow the
acclaimed professional development programs which train more
than 60 of the country’s finest emerging singers, technicians,
and administrators each year.
R Our popular Spotlight on Opera series was revamped to
highlight the intellectual content in each opera. Guest speakers
included Isaac Mizrahi, as well as representatives from the
St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute, St. Louis Art Museum, St. Louis
Symphony, Alliance Française, and others. Series attendance has
grown more than 45% since 2008.
R The new production of Hans Krasa’s childrens’ opera
Brundibár, originally performed in the Theresienstadt ghetto
during World War II, continued OTSL’s collaboration with
the Touhill Performing Arts Center at UM-St. Louis and the
Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and drew a total audience
of 6,470 young people and adults for five school and public
performances in November.
BRUNDIBÁR
FISCAL YEAR 2010
“Hans Krása’s Brundibár is a sweet, charming opera for children,
Opera Theatre’s dedicated board, donors, and patrons ensured
Scene from
Brundibár
a simple tale of good overcoming evil. In Opera Theatre of
St. Louis’ intense new production, performed Wednesday at
the Touhill Performing Arts Center, it becomes much more.”
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Brundibár by Hans Krása, directed by Doug Scholz-Carlson
and Gregory Ritchey in collaboration with video designer
Wendall Harrington, featured 26 cast members ages 8-18 along
with members of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.
This production marked Opera Theatre’s debut at the Touhill
Performing Arts Center which reached approximately 6,470
students and adults across the metro area. Holocaust survivor
Ela Weissberger, who performed the role of the Cat in Brundibár
more than 55 times while interned in the Theresienstadt ghetto,
appeared in each of Opera Theatre’s seven performances and
spoke to numerous school groups and audiences. Local arts
cable network HEC-TV broadcast a public performance live
that the company continued to thrive even in the midst of a
challenging economic period. Contributed operating support
increased by more than 6% over the prior year and has risen
12% since 2008 – a true testament to the extraordinary generosity
of our contributors and to their belief in OTSL’s mission.
Expenses were once again held closely in check and market
recovery allowed the endowment to rebound considerably.
The 35 th Anniversary Spring Gala was a highlight of 2010,
grossing more than $700,000 for Opera Theatre’s professional
development and education programs. Co-chairs Donna
the event and the community responded with an outpouring of
support, led by gala host sponsor Centene Corporation. Opera
Theatre was delighted to welcome Wells Fargo Advisors as the
along with pre- and post-performance interviews with directors,
Made possible with a leadership gift from Dana Brown Charitable Trust,
this community and across the country contributed more than
U.S. Bank Trustee; with generous support from The Staenberg Family
Foundation in conjunction with THF Realty, Inc.; and with special thanks
to Sign of the Arrow/Pi Beta Phi Alumnae of St. Louis, and Target.
$4 million this year to sustain one of the region’s most acclaimed
cultural institutions.
“… although critics really aren't supposed to review the
audience, this one – which ranged from waist-high to almostadult-sized
– deserves a word of appreciation: they were silent
and attentive, almost glued to the performance to an extent
unheard-of among grownups.”
We thank each of these donors for their outstanding investment
which has enabled Opera Theatre to end the year once again in
from around the country who will shape the future of the art
