To each <strong>the</strong>rapist she had consulted, <strong>the</strong> imagery<br />

of squeezing worms to obtain milk suggested, understandably,<br />

penis and semen; and each, as a result, inquired<br />

about possible sexual abuse by <strong>the</strong> f<strong>at</strong>her. This<br />

was my first thought also, but I discarded it after hearing<br />

Jennifer’s account of how such inquiries had inevitably<br />

led to wrong directions in <strong>the</strong>rapy. Although<br />

her f<strong>at</strong>her was extremely frightening and verbally abusive,<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r she nor her siblings recalled any incidents<br />

of sexual abuse.<br />

None of her previous <strong>the</strong>rapists explored <strong>the</strong> severity<br />

and <strong>the</strong> meaning of her omnipresent fear of<br />

de<strong>at</strong>h. This common error has a venerable tradition, its<br />

roots stretching back to <strong>the</strong> very first public<strong>at</strong>ion in psycho<strong>the</strong>rapy:<br />

Freud and Breuer’s 1895 Studies on Hysteria.<br />

A careful reading of th<strong>at</strong> text reveals th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> fear of<br />

de<strong>at</strong>h pervaded <strong>the</strong> lives of Freud’s p<strong>at</strong>ients. His failure<br />

to explore de<strong>at</strong>h fears would be baffling were it not for<br />

his l<strong>at</strong>er writings, which explain how his <strong>the</strong>ory of<br />

<strong>the</strong> origins of neurosis rested on <strong>the</strong> assumption of conflict<br />

between various unconscious, primitive, instinctual<br />

forces. De<strong>at</strong>h could play no role in <strong>the</strong> genesis of neurosis,<br />

Freud wrote, because it has no represent<strong>at</strong>ion in <strong>the</strong><br />

unconscious. He offered two reasons: first, we have no<br />

personal experience of de<strong>at</strong>h, and, second, it is not possible<br />

for us to contempl<strong>at</strong>e our nonbeing.<br />

Even though Freud wrote poignantly and wisely<br />

about de<strong>at</strong>h in such short, nonsystem<strong>at</strong>ic essays as “Our<br />

Attitudes Toward De<strong>at</strong>h,” written during <strong>the</strong> after-
