Finalists Selected
for Alumni Board
of Governors
Standing: CUA President John Garvey, Monsignor Robert Panke, Michael Warsaw, Alex Nesmith, J. Paul
Molloy, Tom Zoeller. Seated: Josie Swantek, Sister Mary Scullion, Patricia Watts Kelley, Mary Riggs Cohen.
Alumni Lauded for
Accomplishments
and Virtues
The 2013 Alumni Awards ceremony and gala
were held on April 12 in the recently renovated
Great Hall of Father O’Connell Hall. The
CUA Alumni Association honored eight
alumni with Alumni Achievement Awards
and bestowed the association’s highest honor,
the James Cardinal Gibbons Medal, on internationally
recognized homeless outreach
advocate Sister Mary Scullion, R.S.M.
Co-founder of the Philadelphia-based
homeless outreach and advocacy organization,
Project H.O.M.E., Sister Scullion
emphasized the necessity of service as a way
of living out the truths of faith in daily life.
“The deepest truths of our faith are made
real and alive in the work of reaching out to
the outcasts, feeding the hungry, liberating
the captive, preaching the good news to the
poor, and working for justice,” she said.
Since she began her work in Philadelphia
in 1978 with the homeless population, Sister
Scullion’s ministry has always included personally
patrolling the city’s streets looking for
those in need of assistance.
“Being with the men and women that are
on the street is where I feel the closest to
God,” she said. “It’s really a grace and part of
my faith. There’s no turning back.”
The 2013 Alumni Achievement Awards
were presented to Mary Riggs Cohen, M.A.
1984, Ph.D. 1990; Patricia Watts Kelly,
Ph.D. 2000; J. Paul Molloy, J.D. 1965; Alex
F. Nesmith, B.E.E. 1990; Monsignor Robert
J. Panke, B.A. 1989; Lea Uhre, M.S.L.S.
2002; and Michael P. Warsaw, B.A. 1986.
The Young Alumni Merit Award was presented
to Josie Swantek (B.A. 2000), a documentary
television writer, producer, and
director who founded her own production
company in 2010. Mary Reilly (B.A. 2013)
was the recipient of the Monsignor Mohan
Student Award.
Monsignor Robert J. Panke, the founding
Alumni Association President Tom Zoeller, B.A. 1984,
and Gibbons medalist Sister Mary Scullion, R.S.M.
rector of Blessed John Paul II Seminary,
which is adjacent to CUA’s campus, spoke
about himself and the seminarians he leads.
“It’s pretty much a miracle that I stand
here as a priest and as a rector. Those of you
who knew me at CUA would agree that
miracles do happen,” he said, to laughter and
applause. “And miracles continue to happen.
If you could meet the men, the next generation
of priests, who are happy and healthy
and holy, you would have great hope in the
future of the Church in the United States.”
In closing remarks, University President
John Garvey praised the awardees’ “work in
the arts, in media, in medicine, in charity of
all kinds” as worthy of recognition. “The best
instruction we can provide our students in
the moral virtues is the example of people
like the ones we have here tonight.” — J.G.
