Ladies and Gentlemen:<br />

I write to request that your Honorable Board docket for consideration a request to<br />

authorize me as Mayor, to enter into a contract for solid waste and recycling collection<br />

with Waste Management Inc. for a term offive years. Under the provisions of<br />

Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 30B, Section 12, any contract in excess ofthree<br />

years must receive approval ofa majority vote by the appropriate governing body.<br />

Authorizing this contract will provide the City of<strong>Newton</strong> with cutting edge municipal<br />

solid waste pickup, single stream recycling, and bulky item and yard waste pickup<br />

service as well. This contract has been recommended to us by the Solid Waste<br />

Commission, along with Commissioner Tom Daley and his staff.<br />
