Rubim
de Toledo
A hot night of new jazz from one of Alberta’s
most sought-after musicians! Originally from
Edmonton and now living in Calgary, Rubim
de Toledo, is in high demand as a sideman for
projects in any style, and also has a flourishing
career as a leader.
This special CD release show will feature
music from Rubim’s latest CD, “The River”. The
recording (and this show!) features an all-star
lineup of Alberta jazz musicians and features
all original compositions in an acoustic jazz
quintet format. The music for this CD was
originally written as the soundtrack to “In
Tinge and Tone”, a Decidedly Jazz Danceworks
production. The quintet first performed this
material live in June 2008 and subsequently
recorded in studio in September 2008.
Rubim’s prior recordings include “In Charcoal
and Crimson” (nu-jazz) and “Seu Swing”
(world-jazz), a venture that featured Cuban
and Brazilian musicians throughout.
Apart from his solo work, Rubim is known as
bassist and founding member of the latinjazz
group, Bomba. With Bomba, he has
recorded four CDs and has toured extensively
including Canada, the US, Europe, Asia and
South America.
As a band leader, Rubim is the founder of
the improv/groove collective “reClaim”. With
the reClaim collective, Rubim led a rotating
group of musicians into a more electronic,
improvisational and experimental musical
realm. The collective recorded two live CDs.
On various occasions, Rubim has also led a
nonet in recreating the music of Miles Davis’
“Birth of the Cool”.
Rubim is the musical director for the
prestigious dance company, Decidedly
Jazz Danceworks of Calgary. He is also the
director of the Mount Royal College Large
Jazz Ensemble in Calgary. As well, he teaches
jazz improvisation and directs student jazz
combos at Mount Royal College.
