Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership photographer: John Altdorfer
Message from the President
Dear Downtown Stakeholder:
Downtown Pittsburgh continued to have great success in 2010. The opening of 3 PNC, the Fairmont Hotel,
and a “reborn” lower Fifth Avenue brought new life to the historic Downtown corridor. Market Square
underwent a complete redesign and, along with the opening of the adjacent Market Square Place, promises
to serve as a catalyst for Downtown’s burgeoning residential and dining scene. In addition, the new August
Wilson Center, a strong office market performance, and twice as many people living Downtown as compared
to 10 years ago are all evidence of a Downtown that continues to evolve into a vibrant 21 st century city.
The PDP continued to support Downtown’s momentum. The Clean Team — along with the new PDP
Street Team — kept Downtown clean while managing nuisance crime. Market Square’s reconstruction
created a dynamic new Downtown destination. Throughout the year, the PDP addressed stakeholder
concerns about the cost of parking by becoming engaged in the discussion about monetization of parking
assets. The PDP’s Downtown housing market research resulted in a broader strategy renewing our housing
efforts, and our advocacy for transportation funding helped bring light to one of the region’s most pressing
concerns. The PDP also conducted a study of the transportation needs of Downtown workers and realized
the completion of 18 Paris to Pittsburgh street activation projects. In the spirit of the city’s 21 st century cache,
the PDP continued to embrace new technology by incorporating QR Codes and mobile technology into its
overall marketing strategy. It is easy to see why 2010 represented a major progression towards the PDP’s
vision of a dynamic and compelling Downtown and why it is becoming a “Center of Growth” address in 2011.
The Center of Growth / 3
Without question, the coming year holds a new set of opportunities and challenges; however, the 2011 PDP
Business Plan will help shape the course of continued growth for Downtown and the region. The energy
associated with the opening of the Consol Arena along with the planned redevelopment of the 28-acre
Mellon Arena site, a new Hill District grocery store and YMCA provide a level of optimism for the Hill District
that has not been seen in recent history. The opening of the Stage AE amphitheater, the reconstruction of
Wood Street, and the thoughtful expansion of Point Park University provide new opportunities for further
growth. Funding, particularly as it relates to public transit, and the expected higher cost of parking Downtown,
are clearly challenges the PDP will address in 2011.
In 2011, the PDP remains focused on the delivery of exceptional clean and safe services by engaging the Police
Department, Department of Public Works, Bureau of Building Inspection and others to improve dramatically
the Downtown environment. Additionally, the PDP will renew the BID, prepare a new five-year strategic
organizational plan and increase membership while also implementing an economic development strategy to
drive down the funding gap for housing, reinforce strong office market rates, and manage the new Market Square.
Despite challenges, the PDP is well-positioned organizationally and financially to deliver a high level of service.
As a mature, visible, and innovative leader in Pittsburgh’s urban development, the PDP will continue to serve its
constituency by allocating resources and maximizing stakeholder return on investment.
While my time at the PDP has come to an end, I am proud of the work the staff has accomplished and am
confident they, along with the Board and the PDP’s new leader, will continue their hard work to meet your
expectations of a great Downtown. Thank you for your support over the last five years. I will treasure the
memories and friends I made while in Pittsburgh.
Yours truly,
Michael Edwards
President & CEO
Dear Pittsburgh Downtown Leaders and Stakeholders:
Welcome.
All of us at Huntington are excited for 2011 – this
marks the year we are moving into our new regional
Pittsburgh. We selected Downtown Pittsburgh
because it is a simply one of the greatest places to
work, live and play.
Pittsburgh’s growth is remarkable in the face of
challenging times, but Pittsburgh has always been resilient
and will continue to be an example of progress for our
too, and will be opening another banking branch in
for the community. That’s why we are proud to support
the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and their tireless
Vision
Downtown Pittsburgh is one of America’s great urban centers.
Mission
The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership provides dynamic leadership and a consistent voice to improve the
vitality of Downtown through enhanced services, advocacy, collaboration and marketing.
Strategic Initiatives
The PDP actively pursues five strategic initiatives:
A clean and safe strategy to maintain and promote an inviting Downtown experience
An advocacy and public policy strategy to the realization of Downtown’s full potential
A transportation and parking strategy to improve access to Downtown
A housing and economic development strategy to increase the livability
and generate economic vitality
A marketing strategy to support the promotion of Downtown and the work
of the PDP including communications, public relations, social media and events
•
Funding
The PDP has five main funding sources to support its initiatives.
First, as the management entity for Downtown’s Business improvement District (BID), the PDP receives funding
from assessments paid by Downtown property owners and operates in agreement with the City of Pittsburgh
to manage BID activities. Second, it receives dues from voluntary members who want to invest in the future of
Downtown. Third, through the support of foundations for important project-specific activities. Fourth, government
grants and, fifth, through earnings from advertising, fees and sponsorships.
Partners
The PDP works with a range of organizations to deliver its vision of Downtown. Partners include government agencies
and neighborhood associations, as well as business, community, civic and cultural organizations.
Business Improvement District (BID)
The BID was created by City Council in 1997 and renewed for a third five-year term in November 2006 at the
request of the Downtown property owners.
The BID includes 100 blocks of the Central Business District and the boundaries are the Golden Triangle. More than
4,000 businesses and 350 property owners are located within the BID area.
