The conference provides an outstand<strong>in</strong>g opportunity to hear <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
experts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fields and to network with like-m<strong>in</strong>ded colleagues. It will be of<br />
particular <strong>in</strong>terest to: general dental practitioners, vocational tra<strong>in</strong>ees, specialists,<br />
academics, dental technicians, hygienists, <strong>the</strong>rapists and dental students.<br />
The first day of <strong>the</strong> conference will offer parallel sessions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon and<br />
delegates will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to move between sessions to listen to <strong>the</strong><br />
speaker of <strong>the</strong>ir choice.<br />
The second day of <strong>the</strong> conference will be a s<strong>in</strong>gle ma<strong>in</strong> session offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
speakers of particular <strong>in</strong>terest to all discipl<strong>in</strong>es. On <strong>the</strong> second day of <strong>the</strong><br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>re will be <strong>the</strong> opportunity for delegates to present a 10 m<strong>in</strong>tue<br />
oral presentation of a cl<strong>in</strong>ical case relevant to Restorative Dentistry for <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>British</strong> Society for Restorative Dentistry Gary Pollock Postgraduate Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Prize.<br />
The Society encourages applications from all postgraduate students, higher<br />
specialist tra<strong>in</strong>ees and foundation tra<strong>in</strong>ees. Please send a 500-word abstract<br />

Jo<strong>in</strong>t Autumn Meet<strong>in</strong>g 2013<br />
Dr Paul Baker Paul Baker qualified <strong>in</strong> 1992 from K<strong>in</strong>gs College School of Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Dentistry. He<br />
spent two years work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> hospital oral and maxillofacial surgery followed by a short st<strong>in</strong>t work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> general dental practice. In 1996 he started an MSc <strong>in</strong> periodontology at Guys Hospital. In 1998 he<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ued with a Master of Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Dentistry degree at K<strong>in</strong>gs College London, which he passed with<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>ction. He was one of <strong>the</strong> first dentists to f<strong>in</strong>ish a specialist tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g pathway recognised by <strong>the</strong><br />
General Dental Council and after pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Royal College of Surgeons Membership <strong>in</strong> Restorative<br />
Dentistry was awarded a certificate of completion of specialist tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 2000.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce 2000 he has worked <strong>in</strong> specialist practice, limited to <strong>the</strong> treatment of periodontal disease<br />
and implant surgery. He has taught at all levels with<strong>in</strong> <strong>dentistry</strong>, from teach<strong>in</strong>g undergraduates at<br />
Guys hospital to specialist level courses on advanced surgical techniques for <strong>the</strong> <strong>British</strong> Society of<br />
Periodontology.<br />
Colette Bridgman A Consultant <strong>in</strong> Dental Public Health (CsDPH) Public Health England April 2013,<br />
a member of NHS England National Commission<strong>in</strong>g Group for <strong>dentistry</strong> as Chair of <strong>the</strong> sub task<br />
group on Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery and member of <strong>the</strong> national vulnerable people sub groups.<br />
Prior to this she was seconded to <strong>the</strong> NHS Commission<strong>in</strong>g Board, as cl<strong>in</strong>ical and public health lead,<br />
on <strong>the</strong> development of secur<strong>in</strong>g excellence strategy for commission<strong>in</strong>g secondary, primary and<br />
salaried dental services <strong>in</strong> England. She has been an Associate Specialist Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Adviser with Primary<br />
Care Commission<strong>in</strong>g PCC national dental team s<strong>in</strong>ce 2003. Her <strong>in</strong>terests/special projects encompass<br />
cl<strong>in</strong>ical leadership, referral management, oral health needs assessment, service redesign <strong>in</strong> primary<br />
dental care, workforce and skills development, with<strong>in</strong> a care pathway approach. She has contributed<br />
to <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong> Pilot Dental Quality and Outcomes Framework and cl<strong>in</strong>ical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
programme. She has contributed to <strong>the</strong> DH advanced care pathway groups.<br />
Ian Burn Ian has over thirty years’ experience <strong>in</strong> general dental practice and dur<strong>in</strong>g this time kept<br />
a keen <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> profession with regional roles <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical audit, as postgraduate dental tutor<br />
and <strong>in</strong> undergraduate teach<strong>in</strong>g at Manchester Dental School. More recently he has concentrated<br />
on undergraduate teach<strong>in</strong>g and is currently a Senior Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Teacher at <strong>the</strong> School of Dentistry,<br />
University of Central Lancashire, with a lead role <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g periodontology.<br />
Professor Nico Creugers Graduated from Radboud University Nijmgen where he also got his PhD.<br />
Worked as a general practitioner until 1994, <strong>in</strong> which year he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted professor and head of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Department of Oral Function and Pros<strong>the</strong>tic Dentistry. He is drirector of <strong>the</strong> dental educational<br />
programs of <strong>the</strong> Radboud University Medical Centre s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006. He published more than 180<br />
papers <strong>in</strong> peer-reviewed journals.

Jo<strong>in</strong>t Autumn Meet<strong>in</strong>g 2013<br />
Dr Ulpee Darbar Ulpee is a full-time Consultant <strong>in</strong> Restorative Dentistry and is on <strong>the</strong> specialist<br />
lists <strong>in</strong> Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology and Prosthodontics. Her cl<strong>in</strong>ical expertise lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
management of patients with complex and multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary problems <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g tooth loss, soft tissue<br />
loss and replacement with dental implants.<br />
She lectures nationally and <strong>in</strong>ternationally and is extensively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> post-graduate level education<br />
and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for dentists, specialists and dental care professionals. She wrote <strong>the</strong> first book on dental<br />
implants for dental nurses. She has an active role <strong>in</strong> research as co-<strong>in</strong>vestigator and has published<br />
more than 30 papers.<br />
She is currently Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Director at Eastman Dental Hospital where she manages <strong>the</strong> service. This has<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved pathway redesign, protocol development and reshap<strong>in</strong>g service delivery <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with high<br />
quality patient care. She additionally holds Board positions <strong>in</strong> Royal Colleges and associations.<br />
Dr James Field James is a lecturer <strong>in</strong> Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle University. He leads a<br />
number of <strong>in</strong>ternal and external skills courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.<br />
His ma<strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests are Prosthodontics and Key Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Skills, deliver<strong>in</strong>g over 300 hours of<br />
simulator teach<strong>in</strong>g each year. S<strong>in</strong>ce complet<strong>in</strong>g his MA <strong>in</strong> Education, James has <strong>in</strong>itiated a series of<br />
<strong>in</strong>novation-fund projects to improve <strong>the</strong> student experience at Newcastle. Most recently he received<br />
<strong>the</strong> coveted Vice-Chancellor’s Dist<strong>in</strong>guished Teacher award and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Association</strong> for Dental Education<br />
<strong>in</strong> Europe’s Educator Award, <strong>in</strong> recognition of his exceptional contribution to teach<strong>in</strong>g excellence.<br />
Dr Gurpal S<strong>in</strong>gh Gosall Dr Gurpal S<strong>in</strong>gh Gosall is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist. He looks<br />
after <strong>in</strong>patients <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Psychiatric Intensive Care Units <strong>in</strong> Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust. He<br />
studied medic<strong>in</strong>e at Cambridge University and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals <strong>in</strong> London. He has a<br />
long-stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>formation technology.<br />
In 2000 he founded a medical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g company, Superego Cafe, which runs websites and courses<br />
for healthcare professionals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g criticalappraisal.com. He is an <strong>in</strong>ternational speaker on<br />
critical appraisal skills and runs regular courses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK, Middle East, Hong Kong and Australia. In<br />
September 2012 his book, The Doctor's Guide to Critical Appraisal (PasTest, 3rd edition), won first<br />
prize <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Basis of Medic<strong>in</strong>e’ category at <strong>the</strong> BMA Medical Book Awards 2012 <strong>in</strong> London.<br />
Dr Steve Jarvis Steve specialises <strong>in</strong> pilot performance and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g optimisation; conduct<strong>in</strong>g research<br />
for organisations <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>British</strong> Airways, Thomsonfly , easyJet and <strong>the</strong> RAF, and perform<strong>in</strong>g human<br />
error <strong>in</strong>vestigations for companies <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Thomas Cook Airl<strong>in</strong>es and Air New Zealand. Simulators are<br />
a key resource <strong>in</strong> this, and hav<strong>in</strong>g qualified as a Boe<strong>in</strong>g 737 pilot, Steve has experienced simulation from<br />
both sides of <strong>the</strong> fence. Although now <strong>in</strong>dependent, he rema<strong>in</strong>s a visit<strong>in</strong>g fellow at Cranfield University<br />
and visit<strong>in</strong>g lecturer at K<strong>in</strong>gs College London.

Dr Yuan-L<strong>in</strong>g (Paula) Ng Dr Ng is a Senior Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Lecturer <strong>in</strong> Endodontology at UCL Eastman<br />
Dental Institute; she is <strong>the</strong> Programme Director for <strong>the</strong> MSc <strong>in</strong> Endodontics and <strong>the</strong> MCl<strong>in</strong>Dent<br />
<strong>in</strong> Endodontology. She is a UK General Dental Council registered specialist <strong>in</strong> Endodontics and a<br />
certified member of <strong>the</strong> European Society of Endodontology. She has lectured to both local and<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational professional bodies.<br />
Dr Ng’s research <strong>in</strong>terests are focused on <strong>the</strong> effectiveness and long-term <strong>outcomes</strong> of endodontic<br />
treatment. She has published widely <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational peer-reviewed journals with over 40 peerreviewed<br />
articles and 80 research abstracts. Dr. Ng’s o<strong>the</strong>r professional commitments <strong>in</strong>clude her<br />
membership of <strong>the</strong> scientific committee of <strong>the</strong> European Society of Endodontology and Associate<br />
editorship of <strong>the</strong> International Endodontic Journal.<br />
Dr Nikos Mardas Dr Nikos Mardas qualified <strong>in</strong> Dentistry from University of A<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>in</strong> 1992,<br />
completed his 3 year specialist tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> Master of Science degree <strong>in</strong> Periodontology at <strong>the</strong><br />
Royal Dental College, Denmark, <strong>in</strong> 1997 and was awarded his PhD <strong>in</strong> 2005 from <strong>the</strong> same University.<br />
In 2005, he jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> world known Eastman Dental Institute (UCL) where he is currently Senior<br />
Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Lecturer (Associate Professor level) and co-ord<strong>in</strong>ator for <strong>the</strong> MCl<strong>in</strong> Dent <strong>in</strong> Periodontology<br />
program. A member <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g National and European scientific and professional bodies <strong>in</strong><br />
Periodontology and Implant <strong>dentistry</strong> and Fellow of <strong>the</strong> International Team for Implantology.<br />
He has published many papers <strong>in</strong> national and <strong>in</strong>ternational journals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of tissue regeneration<br />
and dental implants and <strong>in</strong> 2011 he was awarded <strong>the</strong> basic research price from <strong>the</strong> European<br />
<strong>Association</strong> of Osseo<strong>in</strong>tegration. Dr Mardas has more than 16 years of private practice and university/<br />
hospital based post qualification cl<strong>in</strong>ical experience <strong>in</strong> Periodontics and Implant Dentistry <strong>in</strong> Denmark,<br />
Greece and UK where is currently consultant Periodontist and implant surgeon <strong>in</strong> 3 private practices.<br />
Mr William McLaughl<strong>in</strong> Will McLaughl<strong>in</strong> is a Consultant <strong>in</strong> Restorative Dentistry at Cardiff Dental<br />
Hospital hav<strong>in</strong>g been appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1995. He is also postgraduate tutor for Hospital Dentistry <strong>in</strong> Wales<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce 2003.<br />
He is currently convenor for part 2 MFDS for <strong>the</strong> Royal College of Surgeons of Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh and Royal<br />
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He exam<strong>in</strong>es for MRD and is an ISFE exam<strong>in</strong>er for<br />
Restorative Dentistry.<br />
He is currently <strong>in</strong> his third term of office on <strong>the</strong> SAC <strong>in</strong> Restorative Dentistry, hav<strong>in</strong>g chaired <strong>the</strong> subcommittee<br />
for Quality Assurance and Enhancement from 2000 to 2003.<br />
Over <strong>the</strong> 20 years he has provided over 250 postgraduate courses to practitioners and tra<strong>in</strong>ees on<br />
a range of dental, medical and medico-legal subjects. From 2010-2011 he was Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Director of<br />
Cardiff Dental Hospital and is currently cl<strong>in</strong>ical lead for Restorative Dentistry.<br />
Dr Basil Mizrahi Basil specialised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA <strong>in</strong> prosthodontics and implants and is recognised by<br />
<strong>the</strong> General Dental Council as a Specialist <strong>in</strong> Prosthodontics and Restorative <strong>dentistry</strong>. He runs a full<br />
time, referral based private practice specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Complex Rehabilitation and Aes<strong>the</strong>tic Cases and<br />
Dental Implants. He is Director of “Mizrahi Dental Teach<strong>in</strong>g” where he runs hands-on and didactic<br />
courses <strong>in</strong> all aspects of “Advanced Aes<strong>the</strong>tic and Restorative Dentistry”.<br />
He is an Honorary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Lecturer at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and a Diplomate of <strong>the</strong><br />
“American Board of Prosthodontics”.

Eric Rooney Qualified as a dentist <strong>in</strong> 1983, he began work do<strong>in</strong>g voluntary VT <strong>in</strong> Liverpool.<br />
He has held a number of roles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> NHS <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Director, Locality General Manager<br />
and Medical Director.<br />
He was <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> Dental Policy development through <strong>the</strong> <strong>British</strong> Dental <strong>Association</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1990’s.<br />
In 2008/9 he was a member of The Independent Review Team Led by Professor Jimmy Steele.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n he has chaired <strong>the</strong> Department of Health’s Quality and Pathways Steer<strong>in</strong>g Group<br />
and facilitated <strong>the</strong> development and agreement of <strong>the</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical pathways be<strong>in</strong>g delivered <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> governments NHS dental contract reform programme. He recently chaired a review of <strong>the</strong><br />
cl<strong>in</strong>ical pathways after a year’s test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 70 pilot dental practices and <strong>the</strong> recommendations were<br />
implemented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> revised pilots <strong>in</strong> April 2013.<br />
Mr Lee Savarrio Lee is a specialist <strong>in</strong> Restorative Dentistry and currently works as a Consultant <strong>in</strong><br />
Restorative Dentistry at Glasgow Dental Hospital where he is currently Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Lead <strong>in</strong> Restorative<br />
Dentistry with subspecialty <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> Periodontics, Endodontics and Hypodontia. He is closely<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of hospital staff and also enjoys teach<strong>in</strong>g general dental practitioners and<br />
undergraduate dental students. His cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>in</strong>terests are <strong>in</strong> surgical periodontics <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g implant<br />
placement, hypodontia and surgical endodontics. Lee also works <strong>in</strong> private practice ma<strong>in</strong>ly provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
specialist periodontal care on a referral basis.<br />
Lee has published <strong>in</strong> peer reviewed journals and presented work at a national and <strong>in</strong>ternational level<br />
as well as contribut<strong>in</strong>g a chapter to <strong>the</strong> popular Oxford Handbook of Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Dentistry.<br />
Frank Schwarz Frank has been Research Associate Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,<br />
Ludwig Maximilians University, München, Germany. He was <strong>the</strong>n Assistant Professor, Department<br />
of Oral Surgery, followed by Associate Professor and s<strong>in</strong>ce 2010 Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Professor at He<strong>in</strong>rich He<strong>in</strong>e<br />

million pound <strong>in</strong>itiative that was funded by <strong>the</strong> ESRC and <strong>the</strong> EPSRC.<br />
He has an MA <strong>in</strong> Education and <strong>in</strong> 2013 won a National Teach<strong>in</strong>g Fellowship.
