WARNER We studied 23 different commercial products for collecting, storing, securing, and mailing <strong>urine</strong> samples analyzed for illicit <strong>drug</strong> use. Despite <strong>the</strong>ir tamper-indicating features, all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se products can be quickly and easily tampered with, ei<strong>the</strong>r before or after sample collection, while leaving little or (usually) no evidence to be detected. Ei<strong>the</strong>r false-positive or false-negative <strong>drug</strong> test results could <strong>the</strong>n occur. A brief review <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>security</strong> practices and standards associated with <strong>urine</strong> <strong>drug</strong> <strong>testing</strong> suggests <strong>the</strong>re may <strong>of</strong>ten be additional serious <strong>security</strong> problems. Given <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>drug</strong> <strong>testing</strong> and <strong>the</strong> fact that illicit <strong>drug</strong> tests have a huge impact on people’s careers, livelihoods, and reputations, better <strong>security</strong>, especially better tamper detection features, would seem warranted. INTRODUCTION Urine is frequently analyzed for purposes <strong>of</strong> detecting illicit use <strong>of</strong> <strong>drug</strong>s and controlled substances (Kissack, Lee, & Moeller, 2008). Applications include law enforcement and forensics, accident investigations, screening <strong>of</strong> employees and potential employees, fitness <strong>of</strong> duty checks for critical personnel such as those involved in <strong>the</strong> transportation or nuclear industries, <strong>testing</strong> national, international __________ Roger G. Johnston, Ph.D., CPP, is head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vulnerability Assessment Team (VAT) at Argonne National Laboratory. He was founder and head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> VAT at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1992-2007. Johnston has authored 115 technical papers, given 60 invited talks, and holds 10 U.S. patents. Eric C. Michaud is a <strong>security</strong> analyst with <strong>the</strong> Vulnerability Assessment Team at Argonne National Laboratory. Eric is well known in <strong>the</strong> “ethical hacker” community for his work on cyber <strong>security</strong> and physical <strong>security</strong> bypass techniques. He received a Bachelor’s degree in 2007 from Ramapo College <strong>of</strong> New Jersey. Jon S. Warner, Ph.D., is a systems engineer with <strong>the</strong> Vulnerability Assessment Team at Argonne National Laboratory. His research interests include microprocessor applications and vulnerability assessments. Warner holds Bachelor’s degrees in Physics and Business Management (Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Oregon University, 1994), and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in physics (Portland State University, 1998 & 2002).
