Notes from Commodore Bill Kumm
Well, 2010 is two thirds gone and we are all looking
forward to the fall season and some relief from the blistering
heat. Kathleen and I had a great time at the Steak
Cookout 50‟s Party on August 14. Once again the clubhouse
took on the tone for the event. The decorations,
entertainment and food were outstanding. I especially
liked the “Elvis portrait” that I won in a special drawing.
I will bring it to the next business meeting in case you
were not at the party. Elvis never looked so good! A
special thank you to Mike and Connie Albright and their
committee for a job well done.
Our fall social calendar looks like we will be busy and
well fed. The always popular Italian Dinner is September
11 followed by the Blessing of the Fleet/Flag Raising
Ceremony on October 2, then the Chowder Race
Dinner on October 16, and the Commodore‟s Ball November
06 and ending with our Christmas Party on December
11. The boating schedule has us going to Cabbage
Key on September 16, Marina Jack on September
20-24, Autumn Extravaganza at Pelican Bay on October
09 and to „Tween Waters on November 2 - 4.
One of the most important committees in the PGBC is
the Membership Committee. Over the past few years
Phyllis Adamaitis and Jan Norvelle have done an outstanding
job of bringing new members into our club.
Unfortunately, Jan has decided not to continue on the
committee for 2011. We will truly miss her and I wish to
thank her for all of her hard work and dedication. We
need to replace Jan as soon as possible. If you think you
would like to help Phyllis and the club in this important
task, please let us know.
If you have not paid your 2011 dues by the time you are
reading this, you are late. Dues should have been paid
by September 01, 2010. You still have until September
30 to pay with no penalty! After that date your name
will be dropped from the club roster and if you decide to
come back a penalty will be assessed. Please don‟t let
that happen. As always, see you on the water ...
Adopt-a-Shore
Ponce de Leon Park
September 25 at 0930
On Saturday, September 25, the Boat Club
will once again participate in the Charlotte County
Coastal Cleanup. We will gather at the pavilion in Ponce
Park at 0930. I will have pick-up sticks, trash bags and
one size fits all latex gloves. You might want to consider
bringing your own gloves. Bug spray and sun
block are something else for you to remember. We will
have water and pop for everyone, and after the cleanup
there should be hot dogs - if you behave yourselves.
The sign-up sheet will be at the September business
meeting or you can contact Michael Harrington.
WE WON!!
It was a thrilling, nip and tuck race at the Englewood
Cardboard Boat Race, but the power house crew, Ron
Norvelle and Ed Higgins, on the beautiful boat
OSPREY, prevailed and the Club took home the
FIRST PLACE TROPHY.
Credits also go the craftsmen who built OSPREY: Bob
Bridge, Chuck Troike, Dennis Kuzara, Dick Young,
Ed Chaffman, Ed Higgins, Jerry Nering, Joe Hart,
Larry Graber, Ralph Tommasino,
Rich Jacoby, Ron Norvelle, and
Frank Hokenson.
This winds up the race season, with first
place wins at both Punta Gorda and
Englewood. Congratulations guys, and
to all who came to cheer them on!
And a special thanks to Dick Young,
who made it all happen, by providing
the work space for the past three years.

Membership is getting geared up for a busy fall season!
The PGBC Board voted in favor of a membership drive
this fall. This idea was presented to our members at the
August business meeting where it was approved.
The official dates for the Membership drive are October 1
to December 31. However, in September, we will start
advertising and accepting the names of people who are
thinking of joining our club. Once again, this is the perfect
time for our members to encourage people in the
community to check us out. The special incentive will be
a 50% reduction in the initiation fee! As you all know,
that is a very good deal!
We will be hosting a Membership Open House on Sunday,
September 19 from 1300 to 1600. Board members
will be available to help with meeting and greeting visitors.
We hope to have a large turnout on that day!
A personal note from Jan Norvelle: I am planning to step
down as Membership Co-Chair at the end of December.
Phyllis is planning to continue in her position, which will
help with the transition of a new co-chair. Phyllis has
done, and will continue to do, a great job! At this time,
we are looking for someone who is interested in serving
as Membership Co-Chair. If you are interested, please
contact Phyllis or Jan.
Symphony of Trees
For the past several years, the Punta
Gorda Boat Club has participated in
the Charlotte County Historical
Center‟s Symphony of Trees.
Barb Treadway has lent her artistic
talent in designing a tree or wreath in
prior years (thanks Barb). This year
she has decided that someone else
should have the opportunity to represent
our club. We need to have our
application in ASAP. The event will be held from November
17 to December 11, 2010.
If you have ever wanted to decorate the perfect Christmas
tree or wreath, here is your chance. Please give me a call
and I'm sure that you and the club can produce another

Sunshine
Get Well cards were sent to Barb Treadway,
Carol Murdock, and Beth Chaffman.
Sympathy Cards were sent to Sandy Robinson (on the loss
of her mother) and to Ruth Croft (on the loss of her husband
P/C John Croft).
If you know anyone who needs a little sunshine, contact
Kathleen Kumm at 764-1226.
Kayaking
On July 26, the group went on a "road trip" to Nokomis.
We paddled at the Oscar Scherer State Park, followed by a
picnic lunch. It was a great day, and we all had a good
time.
Our August outing was postponed
since so many of our
paddlers were out of town.

Boating Events - Power & Sail
Autumn Extravaganza
October 8 - 10
Autumn Extravaganza is one of
the best cruising events of the
year. It will be held at Pelican Bay on October 8 -10,
that‟s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
This event is for all boats - power and sail. The day
boaters will join the overnight
boaters on Saturday, October 9 for
fun and games on the beach,
swimming and a great picnic.

will held Tuesday, October 5 at 1600.
Cabbage Key Lunch Cruise
Thursday, September 16
Just a reminder, the lunch cruise to Cabbage Key is
Thursday, September 16. Ed and Deb Higgins will be
your cruise leaders for this fun trip.
The Skipper‟s Meeting will be on September 9 at 1600.

Marina Jack Overnight Cruise
September 21-24
Marina Jack in Sarasota is always one of our most
popular destination cruises. Bob & Diane Bridge will
be your cruise leaders for this enjoyable cruise.
The marina is located in the heart of downtown Sarasota
and near St. Armand‟s Circle. Activities can include
shopping, sight seeing at local destinations such
as Mote Marine Laboratories, Selby Gardens, Ringling
Museum, and Sarasota Jungle Gardens. Add in appetizers
on the dock and good restaurants and you know this
will be one excellent experience.
Due to our limited speed, your leaders will travel on
September 20 and overnight at Royal Palm Marina in
Englewood. Slower boats can join us there or select
their own destination. Faster boats can travel directly to
Marina Jack on September 21.
The group will spend the nights of September 21, 22,
23 at Marina Jack. On September 24, you may leave
for home or extend your trip to ports to the north.
The Skippers Meeting will be Thursday, September 16
at 1600 at the club house. Sign up on line or contact

CHOWDER RACE
Saturday , October 16
Join us for a fun race on Saturday, October 16.
We are planning to use the reverse start again, as was
done last year, to eliminate the complexity of a racing
start and reduce the advantage to experienced racers.
You will be assigned a start time based on handicap.
Slower boats will start first taking an early lead and all
boats will finish close together. The first over the finish
line will be the winner since the handicaps are factored
into the start times. As a further incentive to get out
more boats, a shortened 6.0 NM course will be used and
generous handicaps given to first time racers.

will notify all participants of the skippers meeting as we
get closer to the race.

Blessing Of The Fleet, Flag Raising
and Remembrance Ceremony
Saturday, October 2
Traditionally, the opening of the boating season starts
with the Blessing of the Fleet and Flag Raising ceremonies.
Ours will be held on Saturday, October 2 at 1100
starting with Bloody Marys and Mimosas. A brunch of
scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, croissants, fruit
cup, coffee and tea will be served at noon catered by
Skyview Cafe. The cost is $10.00 per person. Mark your
calendar, space is limited.
Weather permitting, members can anchor their boats at
Marker "4", behind the boat club, starting at 0930 to participate
in the ceremonial Blessing of the Fleet. A pontoon
boat will be shuttling members back and forth to the
boat club. You can sign up online to bring your boat or
contact Commodore Bill Kumm at 764-1226.
The committee members are Walt & Arlene Baur, Ed &
Beth Chaffman, Bill & Kathleen Kumm, Bob & Ruth
Van Jones and chairpersons Frank & Jan Hokenson.

Chowder Race Dinner
Saturday, October 16 at 1730
The Chowder Race dinner is both a celebratory and recognition
event for the participants in the Chowder Race
and is open to all members and guests. Results of the
day‟s racing event and awards will be presented at this
dinner, and you can be certain those that participated in
the race will be sharing the “real story” of the race.
The first Chowder Race was held in October, 1981. In
1982, one hundred people paid an entry fee for the
Chowder Race. By 1984, the Chowder race was cosponsored
by Miller Brewing Co. and was filmed by
Channel 20 TV. In 1986, a fleet of 33 boats and well
over 100 sailors participated in the race and again, the
race was filmed and broadcast by Channel 20 TV.
The first Chowder Race dinner was held in 1982. The
chowder was prepared by club members and made with
sweet Charlotte Harbor clams gathered and shucked by
Boat Club members. The tradition of harvesting clams
from local waters for the awards dinner clam chowder
continued until at least 1990.
This year‟s awards dinner will be held on Saturday,
October 16 and will begin at 1730 with hors d‟oeuvres,
beer, or BYOB. Dinner will follow at 1830. The committee
will be serving what some say is the best New
England clam chowder ever served at the boat club, although,
I will admit, the clams will not be gathered from
local waters. Also, back on the menu this year by popular
demand will be Bahamian conch chowder. Sides and
dessert will also be provided. Cost is $15.00 per person.

Attitude Adjustment
BYOB and bring an appetizer to share. Bring what
you want to drink and your glasses. The club will provide
the ice. Your appetizer should be ready to be placed
on the table. Please bring serving pieces if they are
needed. Hours are 1700 to 1900.
September is here and the heat continues. Come and
take a refreshing break, enjoy the sunset, and hear what
friends have done over the summer.
