FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the first edition
of Colours for 2012, I hope
that you start the year rested
and refreshed.
You will notice that during
our short closure we have
been able to refresh the Club
building, “Landunna House”;
the billiard room has been repainted and the
refurbishment completed on the Long Tan Room.
Work continues with the accommodation rooms
being repainted as well as other necessary
maintenance being carried out progressively,
throughout this we aim to limit the disruption to
members and appreciate your patience whilst we
carry out the work. We do believe that keeping
the Club fresh and well maintained is important
in meeting the needs of members.
You will have noticed from previous editions of
Colours that we have admitted quite a few new
members over the last few months, leading to
a net increase in members for this year to date.
The Board continues to believe that a strong and
vibrant membership is the key to a successful
future for our Club. To this end we continue to
seek new ways to address member’s needs and
encourage new members to join by offering new
activities, services and events to members as
well as hone our existing services.
In December we conducted a trial of a longer
trading period and closed the Club a week later
than usual, the response from members was
positive and many of you took the opportunity
to use the Club and attend functions during that
time. These functions were well attended and
successful, resulting in a good trading result.
We will look to extend trading this year in the
same way.
One of the first new services for members is
“Aperitifs in the Ward Room”. Members looking
to hold a special event or dinner, or simply have
some Hors d’Oeuvres with family or friends may
now book for pre-dinner canapés and drinks,
served in the Ward Room. Details are available
from the staff at the Club.
For those who wish to bring clients, friends or
family to the Club for lunch but may not want to
be as formal as required in the dining room, the
a la Carte menu is now available in the Gallipoli
Room and day time dress rules apply.
We are also starting a new series of events,
which entails us conducting a series of
breakfasts, with speakers to inform and entertain
Club members. At the first one we will hear from
Isobel Redmond, Liberal Leader and Leader
of the South Australian Opposition.
Finally it is good to say that the Apperitivos,
held on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month,
are a growing success. We were able to hold
the first one this year in the gardens, which was
very enjoyable and well appreciated by those
attending. Where the weather allows, we will
hold Apperitivos in the garden in the future.
If you have not taken the opportunity to attend,
I would recommend them as an enjoyable way
to end the work week.
Please review the upcoming events, I am
sure you will find that there is a diverse and
entertaining range of events which can now be
booked online or you can call Sharon or Lizzie
for further information and bookings.
I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
COLOURS MARCH 2012 3

GENERAL MANAGER
From the General Manager
Welcome to the first
edition of Colours for 2012
featuring a wide range of
events and activities for you
to enjoy.
Over the coming months
you will see a number of
slight changes to the way
in which we operate and the services that we
provide in order to improve the value of your
Membership, helping us to redirect resources
to deliver on the changing ways in which you as
members have been enjoying the facilities over
the past twelve months.
Following on from the November edition of
Colours and in response to the growth in a la
carte dining we saw through the second half
of 2011, we will be continuing to promote
our Dining Room menu in both the Air Force
and Gallipoli Rooms in addition to the Colonel
Downes Dining Room. This ensures that
Members not wishing to dine in the more formal
surrounds of the Colonel Downes Dining Room
will be able to order from the same menu
dressed in Business/Smart Casual in both
auxiliary rooms during the day and in the Air
Force Room during the evening. To support
this increased focus on a la carte dining, the
Bar menu will be slightly rationalised however
given the ability to order from either menu, the
dining selection will actually increase for those
Members dining in one of the auxiliary rooms.
To support further the focus on a la carte
dining and the unique service made available to
Members of private Clubs around the world, we
will be offering ‘Aperitifs in the Ward Room’ as
mentioned by the President in his column above.
To provide us with the necessary resources to
service this rekindled initiative the Board has,
based on a review of dining room bookings,
agreed to limit a la carte dining to Wednesday
through Saturday evenings. Full service will be
available Wednesday through Saturday for lunch
and private function bookings in excess of 40
guests will still be able to be taken on a Tuesday.
As a result, themed dining will now move to
Wednesday evenings. Members will be asked
if they would like to partake in ‘Aperitifs in the
Ward Room’ at the time of booking dinner in the
Colonel Downes Dining Room.
Finally, a number of regular maintenance and
painting jobs were completed over the Christmas
shut down this year including the painting and
freshening up of the Billiard Room Work is
now continuing upstairs in the accommodation
area with each of the rooms being completely
repainted.
I hope you enjoy this edition of Colours and find
a number of Events or groups such as our
recently introduced Waypoint Group, detailed
further on page 15, that are of interest.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club
enjoying everything your Club has to offer.
“Landunna” is the original name of the Club’s building named by Mr John Rounsevell who built
the home in 1872. It was named after his father’s birthplace in Cornwall.
Members can find out more information about the Club’s history in “The Club , Martial and Mufti”
Cigar & Single Malt Dinner
Friday 17th February 2012
Huddled in a dark corner of a deserted public
park, a man pulls a long, dark, object from his
pocket. He flicks the flint on his lighter, brings
the flame to the tip of the oblong object and,
shielding it from a momentary breeze, carefully
sucks in, slowly rolling the end across the flame.
In a few seconds, he extinguishes the flame,
takes a deep puff and luxuriates in the sweet,
flavours of a cigar of the finest origin, but in a
few minutes, before any passers-by complain,
he stubs out the cigar, throws it into a nearby
bin and goes on his way.
However, an unusual phenomenon has swept
the country - men, and a few women, smoking
cigars in garden areas set aside for the occasion
and finding support in a fellowship of cigar
smokers. The events go by various names: cigar
nights, smokers, or cigar dinners.
Why the attraction? The bottom line is quite simple
and straightforward--everyone wants to enjoy
his/her cigars the way they are supposed to be
enjoyed: in a relaxed atmosphere, where the best
food and wine are available, where the camaraderie
is irresistible and the night is always young.
Time: 19:00 for 19:30
Dress: Black Tie
Cost: $65.00, to be invoiced with drinks
Bookings Close: Friday 10th February
Smoking will be in the Garden Only
Celebrate the RAAF Dining
in Night
Friday 23rd March 2012
Although Australian Military aviation can be traced
to flights made by a Royal Engineer Balloon Section
at the Sydney Agricultural Ground on 7-8 January
1901, it was not until late 1910 that a plan for
an Australian Aviation Corps was submitted to
the Military Board. Final approval to establish the
Australian Flying Corps was promulgated in Military
Order No.570 on 22 October 1912, with orders
placed for two B.E.2a, two Deperdussin and a Bristol
Boxkite to equip the new air arm.
734 acres of grazing land was purchased at Point
Cook, Victoria at a cost of over £6,000, and the
creation of the Central Flying School was announced
on 7 March 1913. The first flying training course
commenced on 17 August 1914.
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the secondoldest
independent and permanent air force in the
world (after Britain’s Royal Air Force). Whilst its
origins can be found in the Australian Flying Corps
of World War I as above, the Air Force was not
established as a separate organisation until 1921.
This formal Club dinner is to commemorate the
foundation of this arm of the services and all
members are invited to attend.
Encounter Dinner
Friday 13th April 2012
It is 210 years since LCDR Matthew Flinders and
Captaine de vaisseau Nicholas Baudin had their
chance meeting in Encounter Bay.
Captain Matthew Flinders in his ship, Investigator,
left Kangaroo Island on the 6 April 1802 and
sailed east. He named the narrow strait between
the island the mainland Backstairs Passage, and
a bay on the island Antechamber Bay.
About 4 o’clock in the afternoon of 8 April
a sail was seen ahead and preparations made
for action, but on heaving to it was found that
the ship was the French Le Geographe under
Captain Baudin. Flinders went on board, gave
Baudin some of his charts and informed him
where water was available on the island and
at Port Lincoln.
Baudin had come from the east and many of
the names bestowed by him along the coast
have been retained including Lacepede Bay,
Rivoli Bay, Guichen Bay and Cape Jaffa.
Flinders named their meeting place
Encounter Bay. On the 8 April 1902 a plaque
commemorating this meeting was unveiled at
Rosetta Head, Victor Harbour.
“Life on the Battlefields 94 years later”
A qualified battlefield guide, Ms Charlotte
Descamps was born in Poperinge, Belgium and
started up the B&B Varlet Farm specialised for
guests having an interest in the Great War. Ms
Descamps worked as a battlefield guide for the
New Zealand Embassy on Anzac Day between
2004 and 2009 and having carried out research
work for the Passchendaele Memorial Museum
1917 at the National Archives in Kew lectured at
the Western Front Association seminar in Canada
in 2011.
Varlet Farm is situated in the centre of the
battlefields of Third Ypres, part of the Salient.
Eventually 5 major battles were to be fought in
the Salient. Today, there are hardly any visible
signs of the Great War, other than the many
cemeteries and memorials, to explain to what
extend the Salient was destroyed. Yet, year after
year, evidence of that conflict is being found.
Ordnance is part of daily life for those working
in the soil: farmers, contractors, constructors,
everyone is aware of the fact that they will come
across live ammunition. An average of over 200
tons of ammunition is still being collected every
year. High explosive shells, shrapnel shells,
trench mortars, hand- and rifle grenades, toxic
ammunition : it is all part of the iron harvest in
the Salient
Working in the soil reveals more of the history
of this area : helmets, rifles, rum jars, badges,
buckles, silent pickets etc., which are still
being found are revealing more information.
Occasionally ammunition dumps or a tunnel are
being discovered as well. Research in archives
gives information on dugouts which are still
down deep in Flanders Fields today.
Ms Descamps will be in Australia in April to
perform a number of lectures on the East Coast
and has kindly agreed to this dinner at the Naval,
Military & Air Force Club of South Australia
following a series of lectures on the Great War
Bremerton Wines
Wednesday 13th June 2012
Langhorne Creek, just 70km South East of
Adelaide, produces some of the finest fruit in
Australia, That’s why Craig and Mignonne Willson
chose to make their home there in 1985. The
winemaking team headed by family winemaker
Rebecca Willson has taken the quality of their
wines to new standards.
Rebecca seeks the best possible fruit from
their own and other specialised Langhorne
Creek vineyards to craft traditional, full
bodied, full flavoured, mouth filling Langhorne
Creek wines that show a consistency of style
whilst encouraging the true varietal grape
characteristics to be expressed.
The winery has invested heavily in a premium
French & American oak program using 220 litre
barriques to ensure subtle and complementary
oak influences. The winery utilises traditional
open top fermenters, made from stainless steel
LTCOL Langdon Blight - A History of Anzac Day
As we approach the centenary of the Gallipoli
landing in 2015, it’s appropriate that we reflect
on the meaning of Anzac Day as a day of
national commemoration. To do this, we need an
understanding of the history of Anzac Day, and how
it has evolved into the day we now know. It has
three distinct components: the Dawn Service, the
march, and the fact that it is a holiday. But Anzac
Day probably means something a little different for
each Australian, and we all have opinions on the
future and relevance of the day. The intent of the
presentation is to look at the history of Anzac Day,
how it has evolved, and to stimulate some thought
on where it might go into the future.
Lieutenant Colonel Langdon Blight joined in the
Army Reserve in 1976, and his postings have
included service with the 10th/27th Battalion,
The Royal South Australia Regiment, and with
the Adelaide Universities Regiment. Langdon
has an interest in South Australian history and in
military history generally, and would argue that an
appreciation of our past is central to determining
our future.
FLTLT Sean Leyden
In 1977, Martin Van Creveld wrote a first-of-itskind
comprehensive study on the importance
of logistics in warfare entitled Supplying War.
Highlighting the example of the North African
campaign of WWII, Van Creveld wrote that,
“Though Rommel’s supply difficulties in 1941-
1942 are probably mentioned as a crucial
factor in his fall by every one of the enormously
numerous volumes dealing with him, no author
has yet bothered to investigate such questions
as the number of lorries that the Afrika Korps
had at its disposal or the quantity of supplies
those lorries could carry over a given distance
in a given period of time.” When the analysis is
done however, one finds that, although he was
normally a tactical genius, Rommel in this case
had placed himself in an impossible position.
Come and learn about the critical role logistics
play in warfare through the hard lessons learnt
by Rommel during the North African campaign
of WWII.
Sean Leyden is a regular presenter at the
Military History Nights and is a former U.S. Navy
Lieutenant Commander and F/A-18 pilot. Sean
now enjoys researching, speaking and drawing
on military history topics as a means of creating
messages that inspire powerful living.
