TRAINING CAMP 2010
quarterback, running back, wide receiver, offensive line, defensive
line, linebacker and defensive back.
But there were some special surprises in store for the campers.
Several members of the 49ers 2010 rookie class coached the campers
and showed them the skills necessary to play in the NFL.
Quintin had been waiting for this all weekend. With every passing
day he became more anxious.
The 12-year-old from Modesto knew the 49ers Youth Football Camp
was going to be fun, but he had no idea just how amazing it would be.
“When we drove up and saw the 49ers building I knew it was going
to be awesome,” Quintin said. “This has been so much fun. It’s probably
the coolest camp ever.”
Quintin was just one of 150 boys and girls who felt the same way
when they arrived at the 49ers Santa Clara practice facility on July
12.
The three-day camp was open to kids between 7 and 14 years old,
and no matter the age, everybody had a great time. The campers
learned the fundamentals of every position, they listened as 49ers
players and coaches talked to them about the importance of staying
disciplined, and they got autographs from some of their favorite
49ers.
“It’s hard to pick just one favorite part,” 10-year-old Elena said.
“We did so much and it has all been so much fun.”
Every camper got to practice every position because the 49ers wanted
to make sure the kids got a good feel for all aspects of the game.
“We just wanted to give the athletes the opportunity to experience
everything,” said Jared Muela, 49ers youth football coordinator.
“We want them to get a feel for what they like, what they dislike and
what they’re naturally good at.”
The first two days of the camp was spent focusing on the fundamentals.
The campers were divided into four groups and they went from
station to station learning how to play the different positions –
Also, left tackle Joe Staley, safety Taylor Mays and running backs
coach Tom Rathman spoke the kids about having fun while playing
football, making the right
choices and respecting
their coaches, teachers
and parents.
On the final day of camp
the kids got to implement
all the skills they had
learned.
They lined up on offense and executed the plays they practiced all
week. And as they had throughout the camp, everyone got to play
every position.
“It was just really fun,” said 7-year-old camper Nico. “If you want
to come here next year that would be a great idea if you are a 49ers
fan.”
TRAINING CAMP 2010
Exercise Tip of the Month
Before you start playing your favorite sport or exercising, it is important to get a good stretch in the major
muscles of your body. This helps your muscles warm up, and can lessen the chance you’ll get hurt. It only
takes a few minutes to warm up, but getting injured could take months to heal!
If you stand up and stick your arms in the air as high as they will go, this is static stretching; stretching
while standing in place. Static stretching also takes place when you are on the ground with
your legs out and you try to touch your toes.
Dynamic stretching involves movement.
Jumping jacks, slow jogging, and arm
circles are ways to stretch your body
dynamically. A combination of both can
ensure your body gets ready for some fun
movement and exercise! Try a new sport
with a friend or sibling this fall; after all,
being active is more enjoyable with other
people (like playing football!)
Train Like the Pros:
Training Camp Day
PLAYBOOK
TRAINING CAMP 2010
While Alex Smith, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis and the rest of the
49ers entertain the Kids Club with their skills on the field, Sourdough
Sam and the 49ers Gold Rush cheerleaders will interact with
the kids on the sidelines.
The San Francisco 49ers have one of the toughest training camps
in the NFL.
The hits are hard, the practices are long and the two-a-days can
become exhausting.
And on August 19, 49ers Kids Club members will have an opportunity
to take it all
in as part of the
team’s annual
Kids Club day at
training camp.
Every year the
49ers give Kids
Club members an
exclusive, behindthe-scenes
look
at all the hard
work the players
put into their
game.
“We want to give these kids an opportunity to see just how much
preparation and dedication the 49ers put in before the season
begins,” said Jared Muela, 49ers youth football coordinator. “Plus,
the opportunity to interact with NFL players is a unique experience
they will remember for the rest of their lives.”
Kids Club gold members received priority registration for this exclusive
event, and all 500 spots were filled within 48 hours of when
it opened up to the rest of the Kids Club. To upgrade your Kids Club
membership, have your parents fill out the form on the back page
of this newsletter.
When the Kids Club comes out to camp, they will begin the day with
a brief tour of the facility before settling in to watch practice.
There will also be face painting provided by Dream Star Parties,
samples of See’s Candies and interactive games. The whole event
will be filmed for 49ers Total Access for Kids, a new TV show set to
debut this fall.
After watching practice, the kids will have the opportunity to meet
their favorite 49ers and get all the autographs they want.
“I just had a lot of fun with all the players,” said 7-year-old Jayden,
who attended the event last year. “We got to meet with them and
get their autographs, which was really cool.”
After the players leave the field, it will be time for the Kids Club
members to showcase their skills.
Coached by 49ers staff members, the young players will participate
in the Gatorade Jr. Training Camp program in which they will
practice the same drills the 49ers just completed. They will get
to work on passing and catching the football, they will be taught
the correct way to carry a football and they will even learn proper
tackling techniques.
It will be an experience nobody will forget.
“It was really cool because we got to see and do what the players
do every day,” 12-year-old Veronica said after last year’s Kids Club
day at training camp. “It was so much fun and I got to see all the
players.”

Player Spotlight:
Alex Smith
PLAYBOOK
When I was in school…
My favorite food was: Being from
San Diego, I would have to say
Mexican food.
My favorite subject in school was:
Math.
TRAINING CAMP 2010
When I grew up, I wanted to be: A
doctor.
My favorite sport was: Football,
but I only played flag football
because I didn’t get to play tackle
football until high school.
My favorite recess game was: Dodgeball.
My favorite TV show was: Saved by the Bell and Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles.
Alex Smith became the 49ers starting quarterback midway through
the 2009 season, and after taking over he played perhaps the best
football of his career. In his 10 starts last year, Smith threw 18
touchdowns and completed more than 60-percent of his passes. He
finished the year with a quarterback rating of 81.5.
The former No. 1-overall pick is
the undisputed starter headed
into training camp, and he has
high expectations for himself and
the team.
“I just can’t wait to get out there
and get going because I know how
good this team can be,” Smith
said. “I feel really confident. I
know we have a lot of work to do
during training camp, but this is
a great group of guys and we’re
ready for the challenge.”
Before Smith became an NFL
quarterback, he grew up just like
any other California kid. Find out
what he was like when he was
your age.
My favorite animal was: My dog.
My favorite after school activities were: Football and dodgeball
with my friends.
My favorite vacation was: My family went skiing twice a year up in
Montana and Utah. That was always a lot of fun.
I spent my summer vacations: Hanging out with friends at the
beach.
Tips for Success:
“School is the vehicle for all success.
It is going to take you where you want to go in life. If you don’t do
well in school, it is difficult to excel in life. It’s not always easy,
but school is something that is important, no matter what you
want to be.
Whether you want to be a professional football player, the president,
a doctor, a police officer, or whatever it is, you have to do well
in school to succeed.”
