Grants Awarded in <strong>2005</strong><br />
<strong>BCF</strong> awarded a total of $254,500 in grants in <strong>2005</strong>, including $131,053 in<br />
Discretionary Funds, $24,859 from the <strong>Brookline</strong> Youth Fund, $9,700 in grants<br />
from the Environmental Stewardship Fund, $16,925 in grants for the <strong>Brookline</strong> 300<br />
celebration (in addition to $26,000 awarded in 2004), $7,500 in grants from the<br />
Fund for Arts and Culture and other gifts designated for the arts, $38,370 in rent<br />
subsidies, and $26,093 in Emergency Assistance Grants to individuals and families.<br />

Health And Human Services<br />
Match-Up Interfaith Volunteers for volunteer programs to provide medical<br />
transportation and friendly visits to frail and isolated <strong>Brookline</strong> elders. $5,000<br />
Rogerson Communities for a weekly music therapist as part of the arts programming<br />
in the Adult Day Health Program at the <strong>Brookline</strong> Senior Center. $5,000<br />
Kids’ Clothes Club to purchase winter coats for low income <strong>Brookline</strong> teenagers, and<br />
support for operating costs. $1,500<br />
<strong>Brookline</strong> Recreation Department start up funding for Fit for Life, a weeklong,<br />
town wide fitness advocacy program. $1,940<br />
Baker School Extended Day to purchase and install equipment, and to train<br />
instructors for an Adventure Education program, a collaboration between Extended<br />
Day and the Physical Education Department to promote mental and physical fitness<br />
in students in kindergarten through 8th grade. $14,906<br />
HEARTH for support services for formerly homeless elders living at the Ruth Cowin<br />
House in <strong>Brookline</strong>. $7,500<br />
<strong>Brookline</strong> Council on Aging Year 3 of a 3-year matching grant for senior van<br />

Lincoln School PTO for Respect for All training for teachers and staff at Lincoln and<br />
Driscoll Schools to foster a comfortable school environment for families of gays and<br />
lesbians. $3,954<br />
<strong>Brookline</strong> Schools Staff Children’s Center to produce Storytelling for Infants<br />
and Toddlers, a handbook for parents and teachers on how to improve fundamental<br />
pre-literacy skills. $4,500<br />
MAB <strong>Community</strong> Services to support a music education program for brain-injured<br />
adolescents in residential Ivy Street School, in collaboration with <strong>Brookline</strong> Music<br />
School. $3,000<br />
Devotion School PTO for Tune Into Language, a kindergarten program using music<br />
to teach literacy skills in classrooms with many children whose first language is not<br />
English. $4,475<br />
Driscoll School PTO for a project that involves 8th graders as photographers who<br />
will illustrate a forthcoming book, American Adolescents in the 21st Century. $1,000<br />

Artbarn <strong>Community</strong> Theatre for the after school Rafters Theatre Program for teens<br />
in grades 7 to 9. $10,000<br />
<strong>Brookline</strong> Arts Center to support the event for the Gadsby Awards honoring artistic<br />
achievement for <strong>Brookline</strong> Public School students in grades 4 to 7. $1,828<br />
Company One, Inc. for the Stage One summer theatrical program for 13-17 year-olds.<br />

Coolidge Corner <strong>Community</strong> Chorus for scholarships for low income elders and<br />

<strong>Brookline</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Mental Health Center for the <strong>Brookline</strong> High Risk Youth<br />
Task Force program to provide tutoring, counseling, and coordination of academic<br />
and social services for high school students who suffer chronic or serious illness or<br />
other conditions that put them at risk for failure at the high school. This fund was<br />
created for the local funders who help to provide a one-to-one match for a four-year<br />
grant for this program from the Robert Wood Johnson <strong>Foundation</strong> Local Initiative<br />
Partners Program. $41,968

anniversary to illustrate the generational and ethnic diversity of the community.

The <strong>Brookline</strong> Safety Net $26,093<br />
The <strong>Brookline</strong> Safety Net is a fund of the <strong>Brookline</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> that<br />
provides temporary emergency assistance to residents of <strong>Brookline</strong> in times of<br />
financial crisis and unexpected need. Supported by contributions from <strong>Brookline</strong><br />
residents, and by an allocation from the federal Emergency Food and Shelter<br />
Program, the Safety Net provides help with food, fuel, shelter, and referrals to other<br />
local public and private agencies and resources.<br />
The <strong>Brookline</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Mental Health Center administers the <strong>Brookline</strong><br />
Safety Net Emergency Assistance Program on behalf of the <strong>Brookline</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />
<strong>Foundation</strong>. Referrals for emergency assistance typically come from religious<br />
organizations, schools, social service agencies, the Department of Welfare, the<br />
Department of Social Services, the United Way First Call for Help and the Salvation<br />
Army. The <strong>Brookline</strong> Safety Net provides emergency assistance to an average of 150<br />
individuals and families each year.<br />
<strong>Brookline</strong> Tercentennial Fund<br />
More than 500 <strong>Brookline</strong> residents gave $42,000 between 2004 and <strong>2005</strong> to<br />
the Tercentennial Fund for projects celebrating <strong>Brookline</strong>’s 300th birthday.<br />
The following is a complete list of Tercentennial Fund Grants:<br />
<strong>Brookline</strong> Preservation Commission to preserve and place in the public record<br />
historic photographs of <strong>Brookline</strong> by creating an electronic archive. $3,000<br />
<strong>Brookline</strong> Historical Society for twelve educational markers to be placed on<br />
historically significant public buildings and locations. $4,000<br />
A Shining Example, start-up funds to produce and market T-shirts and caps<br />
promoting <strong>Brookline</strong> 300, with a portion of sales donated to help fund other<br />
celebration projects. $2,000<br />
Goddard House in <strong>Brookline</strong> for <strong>Brookline</strong> Story Partners 300, bringing people<br />
of different ages and backgrounds together for life story interviews using the<br />
StoryCorps model devised by National Public Radio. $2,850<br />
Artbarn <strong>Community</strong> Theatre to produce a dramatization of The <strong>Brookline</strong> Trunk,<br />
a book about children growing up in <strong>Brookline</strong>, and for an activity at the Town’s<br />
September <strong>Brookline</strong> 300 Festival with masks representing 300 significant residents<br />
in <strong>Brookline</strong> history. $5,800<br />
Puppet Showplace Theatre for a puppet show, presented by Bread & Puppet Theatre<br />
